Chapter 151 What she’s hiding

Chapter 151 What she’s hiding
What she’s hiding

Vivian’s POV

The moment I heard Rosalie’s voice, I jumped back from the window so fast my shoulder slammed against the wall. My heart pounded wildly in my chest, and for one terrifying second, I was sure she could hear it through the door. I had barely managed to turn around when the door opened and she walked in, stopping the moment she saw me.

“Why aren’t you downstairs?” she asked, looking at my face with concern. “Is it because of the way I spoke to you both last night?”

“No,” I answered a little too quickly, forcing myself to sound calm even though I was anything but. “I’m just not feeling well. I think I need some rest.”

She didn’t reply immediately. Instead, she kept looking at me as though she could tell something was wrong. Then the concern on her face softened.

“I know things have been difficult,” she said gently. “But you have to stay strong. Sometimes we don’t understand why things happen until much later. Just give it time. One day, it’ll all make sense.”

I gave her a small nod and forced a faint smile, hoping it looked convincing. All I wanted was for her to leave before she noticed how nervous I really was.

When the door finally closed behind her, I let out the breath I’d been holding. My legs felt weak as I hurried back to the window and shut it properly, making sure there wasn’t even the smallest gap left. My hands were still trembling from how close I’d come to being caught.

I told myself to stop panicking. All I had to do was go downstairs, act like everything was normal, and pretend yesterday had never happened.

That plan lasted only until I walked past Rosalie’s room.

Her door was slightly open.

At first, I meant to keep walking. Then I heard something from inside. It wasn’t loud, but it was enough to make me stop. There were quiet sounds coming from the room, like someone moving things around.

Curiosity got the better of me.

I took a careful step toward the door and gently pushed it open a little wider, making sure it didn’t creak.

The sight that greeted me made me freeze.

Liam was inside.

He was crouched beside Rosalie’s desk, sorting through a stack of papers with quick, careful movements. His full attention was on whatever he was looking for, and he hadn’t noticed me standing in the doorway.

“What are you doing in here?” I whispered, my eyes widening in shock.

“Keep your voice low,” Liam whispered back without looking at me. His hands never stopped moving as he searched through the papers spread across the desk.

Before I could ask another question, we heard footsteps in the hallway.

Our eyes met for a split second before we both reacted. We quickly crouched behind the desk, barely daring to breathe. My heart pounded so loudly I was certain whoever was outside would hear it. The footsteps grew louder, then slowed as if the person had stopped outside the room.

I held my breath, my body tense.

After what felt like forever, the footsteps started again and slowly faded into the distance.

Only then did I let out the breath I’d been holding.

“What exactly are you looking for?” I asked quietly, making sure my voice wouldn’t carry beyond the room.

Liam glanced at me before returning his attention to the papers.

“Anything about Dylan’s treatment,” he said. “I don’t think Rosalie has been honest with us. I have a feeling she’s hiding something important, and whatever it is, it has something to do with me.”

His words sent a chill through me, but I nodded and began searching too.

We opened drawer after drawer, carefully flipping through folders, notebooks, and loose sheets of paper. Every time we found something that looked promising, it turned out to be completely unrelated. Minutes passed, and our hope slowly disappeared.

In the end, we found nothing.

With no choice but to give up, we put everything back exactly where we had found it. Liam made sure every drawer was closed, and I straightened the papers on the desk so the room looked untouched. Once we were satisfied that no one would notice we’d been there, we quietly slipped out and headed downstairs, trying our best to act as though nothing had happened.

We had barely taken our seats at the table when Rosalie looked up from her breakfast.

Her eyes moved from Liam to me, and a small frown appeared on her face.

“What took you two so long?” she asked.

My mind went completely blank.

I opened my mouth, desperate to come up with an excuse, but before I could say a single word, Liam answered for both of us.

“Vivian was helping me look for something,” he said so naturally that anyone would have believed him.

I turned to stare at him, completely caught off guard.

Seriously?

He had dragged me into his lie without even warning me but he left me with no choice but to go along with it.
