Chapter 69 Do You Know Who Lily Is
Sophie's smile faltered; she thought they'd come for her.
But no, it was because of Lily!
Forcing a grin, Sophie said, "She left right after work."
"Didn't you invite her?"
"I did, but Lily didn't want to join. She really doesn't get along with folks at the office."
Sophie explained, looking pitiful, "I tried my best."
Austin felt a twinge of sympathy. "I know Lily's got a temper, but I didn't think she'd actually go to the branch office to handle that issue. How long do you think she'll last?"
Michael gave a weary smile. "I was the one who convinced her to go. Right now, she's the only one who can fix the firewall problem."
"Michael, Lily's doing this on purpose. Why'd you push her to go? We could have just scrapped the project."
"We've poured a ton of money into this project; we can't just abandon it. This is business, not some game where you can quit out of spite. Your live-streaming company has already lost quite a bit. You should be figuring out how to explain the loss to David after the finals."
Michael walked away, disappointed.
With Lily not there, he had no reason to stick around for dinner.
A flash of embarrassment crossed Sophie's face. Was Lily really that crucial?
Austin was annoyed. "Michael's getting more and more biased towards Lily."
Sophie clenched her teeth. "After all, Lily is his biological sister. Of course, Michael would be soft-hearted."
"Even if she is our sister, she can't just do whatever she wants. I don't believe Lily has the skills to solve that problem."
Austin never believed Lily could contribute to the project; he figured Michael just put Lily's name on it.
Sophie eventually took Austin to have dinner with the company folks, where she shone brightly.
Once Michael got into his car and left, he took out his phone and sent Lily a message: [How's your first day at the company? If anyone gives you trouble, let me know right away!]
Lily had just returned to her apartment.
She received Michael's message.
She glanced at it, feeling indifferent, and didn't reply.
After eating, Lily lay on her bed to rest. She instinctively opened her chat with Dennis.
Thinking for a while, she couldn't help but send him a message: [Dr. Gonzalez, what are you up to?]
After sending the message, Lily stared nervously at her phone screen.
She felt a bit strange about herself.
After taking a shower, she still hadn't received a reply from Dennis.
Lily sighed. Was she being too obvious?
She regretted sending him the message.
Lily didn't sleep well that night and woke up the next day with dark circles under her eyes.
She noticed Dennis still hadn't replied.
Feeling down, she got dressed and went to the branch office.
Once she arrived, she opened her computer and started coding. She had tested the software herself yesterday and roughly identified the problem.
Although she had solved this issue in her past life, it had been a long time, so she needed to test it again.
Seeing Lily, Lorenzo said, "You're here early today. Regretting not joining the dinner last night and trying to make up for it?"
Lily completely ignored him.
Lorenzo angrily slapped the table. "Hey, I'm talking to you! What's with the attitude?"
"Your attitude is my attitude! Dinner isn't mandatory for employees. I didn't want to go, so I didn't!"
Lily's response was firm.
Colleagues arriving at the office heard her and gave her a thumbs-up.
Lorenzo, embarrassed and angry, said, "What's with the arrogance? Did you finish the files I gave you yesterday?"
"No."
Lily looked at him indifferently. "That's not part of my job."
"You're in the tech department. How could it not be part of your job?"
"My job is to clean up messes, like the firewall issue."
Lily's tone was cold. She didn't even bother to pretend anymore.
She just wanted to finish the firewall issue quickly and leave.
Lorenzo had never seen such a defiant newcomer. On her second day, she dared to talk back to him!
Shaking with anger, Lorenzo said, "I'll talk to the manager and get you fired!"
"Go ahead and try."
Lily ignored him and continued coding.
Her slender fingers danced across the keyboard, lines of code appearing on the screen.
Soon, Lorenzo came out of the office, glaring at Lily. "Don't get cocky. If you can't fix the firewall, you'll be out of here. I want to see what you can do."
"Don't worry, I'm better than you."
Lily didn't show him any respect.
When Sophie arrived at the company, she was dressed in designer clothes, greeting everyone like a rich heiress.
Seeing the code on Lily's computer, she had a bad feeling.
If Lily actually fixed the firewall, wouldn't Michael favor her even more?
With a calculating look, Sophie glanced at Lorenzo and got an idea.
Lily worked all day without a break, finally finishing the code.
She rubbed her neck. If the test passed tomorrow, she wouldn't need to come back.
She really didn't want to have any ties with the Roberts family.
Packing up to leave, Lorenzo said snidely, "The tech department never leaves on time. Don't you know the rules? If you're taking the company's money, you should contribute."
Lily continued doing her own thing. "You seem to love working overtime, but you haven't fixed the firewall. If you lack the skills, working overtime won't help."
"Who are you calling unskilled? Want to try me?"
Lily slapped him. "Men like you, who lack skills and harass female colleagues, should look in the mirror more often. You don't deserve it!"
Everyone in the office looked over.
Lorenzo, used to being a bully, didn't expect a newcomer to fight back.
He raised his hand to hit back.
A hand grabbed Lorenzo's arm. "Who said you could hit?"
Lily looked up in surprise. It was Austin.
Normally, Austin would just watch her get hit, right?
That's how it was in her past life.
With Austin's arrival, Lorenzo immediately backed down. "Mr. Roberts, I was just disciplining a newcomer."
"This is a company, not a place for fighting."
Austin's tone was cold. After all, Lily was his sister.
If anyone was going to hit or scold her, it would be him.
Who were these outsiders to lay a hand on Lily?
Pushing Lorenzo aside, Austin said, "Do you know who she is?"
These people dared to lay hands on a Roberts family member!
Such audacity!
