Chapter 67 How Can I Make Up
Lily took a cab back to her apartment. As she sank onto the sofa, she noticed bloodstains on her sleeve.
Must've happened when she helped Michael into the car earlier.
She changed her clothes and saw a message from Dennis: [Yes.]
Just one short word.
This guy was always so terse, stingy with his words!
But when he was being sarcastic, he had plenty to say.
That night, while Lily was streaming, Michael kept sending her gifts.
Lily ignored them, but her fans couldn't stay quiet.
[Isn't this ID Lily's brother, Michael? He's so generous!]
[I heard SweetLemon doesn't get along with her family. With all these gifts, it must be worth millions of dollars.]
[She's still a rich girl. No matter how much she fights with her family, she's still a rich girl. Jealous that she has so many brothers doting on her!]
Seeing these comments, Lily's mood soured.
She sent Michael a private message: [Stop sending gifts.]
Michael replied: [Just accept them. You need money living on your own.]
But she didn't need charity from the Roberts family.
Feeling annoyed, Lily contacted the streaming platform staff after her session and refunded all the money Michael had sent.
She didn't care about that money!
Michael saw the refund notification and sighed deeply, "Does Lily hate me that much now?"
Barry spoke up, "Mr. Roberts, Ms. Roberts is just being stubborn. Her ultimate goal is to get Miss Scott out of the picture. Only then will she come back."
"Lily isn't like that. It's my fault for ignoring her feelings, causing all this."
"But Mr. Roberts, Miss Scott is innocent. If it weren't for what happened back then, she wouldn't be an orphan and go through all those awful things. She's the real victim here."
Michael was conflicted.
True, Sophie wasn't at fault.
But Lily's behavior was all because of Sophie. He didn't know what to do.
At that moment, the company secretary walked in. "Mr. Roberts, the firewall issue still hasn't been resolved. Ms. Roberts used to handle this. She surely knows how to fix it."
Michael smiled bitterly, "But she won't even talk to me now."
"How about I try talking to Ms. Roberts?"
Michael nodded, still holding out hope for Lily.
The secretary immediately called Lily. "Ms. Roberts, hello. I'm Alvin Jordan, Mr. Michael Roberts' secretary. We've met before."
"What's up?"
Lily recognized him.
In her previous life, Alvin was one of the few who spoke up for her.
"Ms. Roberts, the software you helped develop for the subsidiary has a firewall issue that hasn't been resolved. The partner says if it's not fixed, they'll cancel the deal. Could you come to the office?"
Lily remembered this from her past life.
Back then, she rushed to fix the problem, only for Sophie to take the credit.
But Alvin spoke up for her and got blamed by Michael.
Lily hesitated, "I'm not an employee of the Roberts Group. It's not my responsibility."
"But you were involved before."
"That was then. I considered myself part of the Roberts family. Now, things are different."
Lily's words were clear to Michael.
He closed his eyes painfully, lips trembling, unsure how to respond.
Alvin quickly said, "How about this, Ms. Roberts? Consider it a freelance job. We'll pay you market rate. How does that sound?"
Lily didn't care about the money.
But if the project failed, Alvin would be affected.
Finally, Lily agreed, "Alright, I'll come by tomorrow."
It was a favor for Alvin.
The next morning, Lily headed to the Roberts Group.
She gazed at the towering skyscraper in front of her, momentarily feeling as though she were still in a past life. She went straight to the top floor, the executive office area.
Alvin was already waiting for her. "Morning, Ms. Roberts. Right this way."
Lily walked into the office and saw Michael. He was out of the hospital already?
Michael stood up, trying to be friendly, "Lily, you're here early. Did you have breakfast? I got a bunch of your favorites."
Lily glanced at the assortment of breakfast items on the coffee table.
Michael picked up a sweet roll, cautiously offering it to her, "Lily, I remember you love sweet rolls."
Lily's lips curled into a sneer, "The one who likes sweet rolls is Sophie, not me."
Michael's hand trembled.
He hastily threw the roll away, "I must've remembered wrong. You like donuts."
Lily remained calm, "My favorite is waffles."
Not sweet rolls, not donuts.
Michael almost couldn't stand. His guilt pressed down on him, making it hard to breathe.
His expression was pained, "Lily, I've been a terrible brother. Can you give me another chance?"
Lily took the documents from the table, her expression cold, "Why bother? Isn't it fine like this?"
Living peacefully, not interfering with each other.
Michael's eyes reddened. "Lily, I want to make it up to you."
"No need."
Lily took the documents and left the office.
Alvin looked at Michael with frustration, "Mr. Roberts, you had such a good chance. How could you mess it up?"
Michael's expression was a mix of laughter and tears, "I was sure she liked that. Barry told me so."
Thinking about it, Michael's expression darkened, "Did Barry deliberately mislead me?"
"Mr. Roberts, it's not about Barry. You didn't remember Ms. Roberts' preferences. It shows you weren't paying attention to her."
Michael slumped onto the sofa, his stomach aching with regret, "How can I make it up to her? Do you have any ideas?"
He genuinely wanted to fix things with Lily!
Alvin thought for a moment, "I'll talk to the subsidiary manager, Derek. Tell him Ms. Roberts is coming to work. They should treat her respectfully. Start with small steps."
"You're right. I can let Lily manage the subsidiary. She'll see my sincerity in wanting to make amends."
Michael remembered Lily had mentioned wanting to run a company before.
Lily left the top floor without looking back and headed to the subsidiary.
She knew where the firewall issue was and needed to rewrite the code and test it on-site.
She checked her phone and saw a message: [Lily, I'm sorry. I was wrong. I remembered your preferences wrong. It won't happen again.]
No need to guess—it was from Michael.
But she didn't care anymore.
Why couldn't Michael understand?
Lily walked into the subsidiary's office and approached the front desk. "Hello, I'm here to fix the software."
"Lily, what are you doing here?"
Sophie, dressed in designer clothes, walked in, her eyes wary when she saw Lily.
Lily's expression didn't change. "None of your business."
At that moment, Derek rushed out, having heard that Ms. Roberts was coming to inspect. He had to make sure she was well-received.
Derek glanced at Lily and Sophie, feeling troubled.
Which one was Ms. Roberts?
The front desk staff glanced at Lily, "This one's here for a job interview as an engineer."
Derek warmly approached Sophie.
This well-dressed girl must be Ms. Roberts.
