Chapter 54 Making Sophie Embarrassed
Lily's eyes flashed with impatience when she saw Sophie walk in.
The people she didn't want to see always seemed to show up.
Sophie walked over, "Lily, you've been gone a while. Austin only froze your credit card because he was worried. Don't get mad."
Lily's face stayed blank.
In her past life, she went through hell after her credit card got frozen.
Now she knew real independence meant financial independence.
Violet cut in, "Give it a rest, Sophie. If Lily wanted to go back, she could be a rich girl again just like that. But you? You'll never be."
Sophie clenched her teeth. She hated it when people brought up her background.
Lily ignored Sophie and turned to the sales assistant, "I want to try on these two dresses."
The assistant, recognizing Lily, didn't dare to slack off.
Sophie, standing nearby, was annoyed. She pulled out her premium membership card, "Excuse me, I want to try on those two dresses too."
Violet was livid. "Sophie, Lily arrived first!"
Calista chimed in, "Well, Sophie here is a premium member. She gets priority. If Lily has a premium card, she can use it too."
Since Lily had left home without taking anything, she definitely didn't have a premium membership card.
The assistant looked awkwardly at Lily, "Ms. Roberts, what do you think?"
Lily released the dresses, "I don't have a premium membership card. Let her have them."
Violet was fuming.
Sophie felt triumphant, like she had finally pushed Lily out of the Roberts family, making herself the sole heiress.
Lily continued browsing, but Calista kept coming over to snatch items from her.
Lily didn't say anything, just kept picking out clothes and shoes.
When Sophie realized the pile of clothes was getting too large, Lily finally stopped and looked at Sophie, "You don't plan on buying all these, do you?"
Sophie's chin went up, "Of course I do. There's an influencer event tomorrow night. Austin said he'd take me, so he sent me to buy some nice outfits."
Lily wasn't surprised.
In her past life, Austin had taken Sophie to that event too.
Violet was indignant, "What's so special about attending an event? Lily..."
Lily stopped Violet from continuing and turned to the assistant, "Since Ms. Scott is so generous today, please go ahead and ring her up."
Sophie's face changed, "Wait, I haven't even tried them on yet."
"They come in sizes. You can have them exchanged. You weren't just planning to try them on and not buy them, were you?"
Lily's calm tone put Sophie in a tough spot.
Violet added fuel to the fire, "If you can't afford them, don't grab so many. Premium member, huh? Can't even afford these?"
Sophie, with no other choice, said, "Who says I can't afford them? Wrap them up."
Calista scoffed, "See, Lily? Sophie is the most favored in the Roberts family. These dresses are nothing. She could buy the whole store if she wanted to!"
Sophie, furious, shot Calista a glare, "Who told you to speak out of turn?"
Reluctantly, she handed over her credit card.
The cashier swiped the card and said, "Sorry, this card isn't working."
Sophie's face fell. "How can it not work? Are you sure you know what you're doing? This is a card Austin gave me. It can't be declined."
The manager came over and tried again. "Ms. Scott, it seems there's a limit on this card, and it can't cover this amount."
Sophie's face burned with embarrassment.
She usually played the role of the sweet sister and rarely spent this much. But she never imagined there would be a limit that couldn't cover these dresses.
Lily smirked. "So, are you buying or not?"
Violet retrieved the dress that Sophie had taken from Lily. "If you can't afford it, don't pretend you can."
Sophie's eyes were red with anger. "Lily, didn't you say you wouldn't spend another dime from the family?"
She didn't believe Lily had the money to buy such expensive clothes.
Lily handed her card to the manager. "Charge it to my card. I'll try them on afterward."
Calista yelled at the manager, "We saw them first! How can you sell them to someone else? We're premium members!"
The manager politely responded, "We usually go by who places the order first, and Ms. Roberts, though she doesn't have a membership card, is a member of the Roberts family and a valued customer."
"She's been kicked out. How is she still part of the Roberts family?"
The manager remained composed. "It's just a temporary family dispute. Blood ties can't be severed."
Lily was the only biological daughter of the Roberts family, and that was a fact.
Sophie burst into tears and called Austin, but he didn't answer.
His assistant picked up instead.
"Why isn't Austin answering?"
"Mr. Roberts drank too much last night and hasn't woken up yet."
Sophie was furious. Why did he have to get drunk at such a crucial time?
What was she supposed to do?
She didn't want to lose face in front of Lily.
Sophie called Michael, who answered quickly. "Sophie, what's wrong?"
"Michael," Sophie's voice was tearful. "I had no choice but to call you."
"Why are you crying? Who upset you?"
"Michael, I was out shopping for clothes and ran into Lily. I thought she had no money after leaving home, but she seems to have plenty. I didn't want her to spend other people's money, so I tried to pay for her. But I didn't have enough, and she got mad."
Calista added, "Lily was really rude, flaunting her money and telling Sophie not to buy if she couldn't afford it."
"Don't say that. I'm sure Lily didn't mean it that way."
Sophie gave Calista a meaningful look.
Michael sounded puzzled. "Lily, where did she get so much money?"
"I'm not sure."
"Alright, I understand. Just come back and don't argue with her."
Sophie reluctantly agreed and hung up, kicking a nearby mannequin in frustration.
In the past, Michael would have sent her money to settle the bill.
Calista asked, "So, did Michael send you money to humiliate Lily?"
"No, he told me to come back."
Sophie couldn't accept this, but then she received a message from Michael: [I've transferred the money. Pay Lily's bill, too.]
Satisfied, Sophie returned to the store.
Lily had just changed into a new outfit and saw Sophie strutting back, likely with the money.
Sophie crossed her arms and said smugly, "Wrap up all these clothes. I'll take them all."
Lily remained indifferent, not caring at all.
Sophie turned to Lily, boasting, "Michael just sent me a large sum of money and told me to spend it all before coming home."
