Chapter 34 They Were Destined to Go Nowhere
Lily was a bit taken aback.
She thought he'd be pleased.
Dennis stood there gracefully, his tone calm, "You don't need to do this to please me."
Lily felt a tightness in her chest. She had acted on impulse, wanting to do something.
But Dennis seemed to have seen right through her.
Lily tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Alright then."
"The chef will be here shortly to cook."
Lily didn't insist. She snuck a glance at Dennis, feeling that he was quite impressive.
Just like the person she had secretly admired in her past life.
That person had always tried to make her see how poorly her brothers treated her, but she didn't want to accept the truth, leading to her tragic end.
Dennis spoke in a manner very similar to that person!
As Lily thought about this, she began to wonder if Dennis might actually be the person she met in her past life.
She was torn.
If only she could have seen that person in her past life, she'd surely recognize him now.
Soon, the chef arrived and swiftly served a table full of dishes.
Lily noticed that most of the food was Mexican and quite spicy—her favorite. Just looking at it made her mouth water.
She focused on eating.
Dennis watched her eat. "Don't get this kind of food at the Roberts' place?"
Lily paused with her fork. "Sophie's health isn't great, so she can't eat spicy food. Meals at home are always bland."
So she rarely got to eat what she loved at home.
Dennis's throat tightened, feeling as if his chest was stuffed with cotton, making it hard to breathe.
Despite being a wealthy heiress, she lived no better than an ordinary girl.
He should have come sooner.
Lily ate until she was full, then wiped her mouth and glanced at Dennis, who was eating elegantly.
She froze for a moment, thinking about how she had been wolfing down her food.
Such a stark contrast.
She was amazed—how could someone even eat so gracefully?
Dennis set down his fork slowly. "Had enough of staring?"
Lily quickly looked away, murmuring, "If you weren't watching me, how would you know I was looking at you?"
Dennis fell silent.
After eating, Lily went straight to the study to work on some problems.
Dennis stayed in the living room, then went to the balcony to make a phone call.
Standing with one hand on the railing, he said, "Find out who confessed to Lily at the school gate this afternoon."
"Dennis, someone confessed to her? That's good news!"
Dennis's tone turned cold. "A guy from the neighboring private high school. I heard he's the hottest guy who transferred from Empire City."
"Oh, him? No need to check—I know who he is. Ethan Murphy, my uncle's son. He got into trouble in Empire City and was forced to transfer to Imperial City."
Dennis's brows furrowed impatiently. "Warn his family to stay away from Lily."
"You're really protective, huh? Everyone has their youthful moments. Besides, she's going to college soon and will have a boyfriend."
"Shut up. She can't be distracted right now!"
Dennis glanced toward the study, where Lily was quietly working on her assignments.
Eric couldn't help but nag, "Alright, I'll tell my uncle, but Dennis, aren't you overstepping? What if she likes Ethan? He's got the looks to charm girls and knows how to make them happy. Maybe Lily's interested in him."
Dennis's eyes flashed with irritation. "If your intelligence matched your nonsense, your mom would be relieved."
"Come on, I was just talking. Why get mad? Remember, you have a fiancée. Don't forget who you met at the restaurant yesterday."
"My business is none of your concern."
Dennis hung up the phone.
He paused, then walked into the study.
He glanced at her test paper. "You're working too slowly. Can't figure this out?"
"I'm trying."
Lily felt a slight discomfort in her lower abdomen, making it difficult to concentrate.
Maybe it was because she had eaten too much spicy food earlier.
Dennis noticed Lily's pale face and lack of energy.
He touched her forehead—no fever.
He asked, "Where does it hurt?"
Lily felt the coolness of his palm and weakly replied, "My stomach hurts. Probably ate too much spicy food."
She hadn't eaten like this in a long time, and her stomach was likely not used to it.
Dennis withdrew his hand, turned, and fetched some medicine and a glass of water.
Lily weakly took the medicine.
Dennis took away her pen. "Stop working. Rest today."
Lily really didn't feel well. She suspected her period might have started.
As she stood up, she felt something flow out.
Lily's expression froze. She knew this would happen.
She hurried to the bathroom and saw the red stain—her period had indeed started.
What now?
Lily remembered she was in the apartment, not the Roberts Mansion.
She hadn't bought any sanitary pads.
She had planned to buy them after school today, but then Ethan confessed, Austin forcibly took her away, and she forgot about it.
Dennis stood outside the bathroom, worried, and knocked on the door. "Did you fall in?"
Lily hesitated. "Can you buy something for me?"
"Sure, but come out and tell me."
Lily was anxious. "I can't come out right now."
Dennis's frown deepened. "What's wrong? Tell me the truth!"
"My period started."
Lily blushed as she said it.
Growing up with only brothers, they didn't know much about girls' needs.
Her first period was handled by a maid.
Dennis stood at the door. "Your period started?"
"Yes."
Her voice was small, embarrassed.
Dennis felt relieved. "I'll go buy what you need. Wait here."
Lily sat on the toilet, waiting for his return.
For some reason, she felt a strange sense of comfort.
Dennis went to the nearest convenience store downstairs. He stood in front of the sanitary pad section, pondering.
A female clerk's eyes lit up when she saw the super handsome guy walk in.
But seeing him standing by the sanitary pads, her heart sank—he must be buying for his girlfriend.
The clerk approached. "Buying for your girlfriend? What type do you want to?"
Dennis pointed with his long finger. "All of them."
"All of them?"
Dennis nodded coolly. "Yes."
"She won't need that many in a month. You could buy one of each type and see which she prefers."
Dennis replied indifferently. "Okay."
The clerk quickly packed the pads, then asked, "Does she need hot cocoa?"
Dennis paused. "Yes."
The clerk made the hot cocoa and grabbed a heating pad, feeling envious of the girl.
How did she find such a handsome and considerate man?
Dennis walked back with the bag, and a man appeared beside him. "Dennis, what did you buy so much of?"
Eric's mouth twitched. "If I'm not mistaken, those are sanitary pads? Dennis, is this your new hobby?"
Since when was Dennis so considerate?
This didn't seem right.
He and Lily were destined to go nowhere.
