Chapter 164
Chapter 164
Wendi
Wendi was waiting on the porch swing for Alex and his wolf Tony, when the front door opened. She had promised to spend alone time with Tony today but Alex seemed to be trying to micromanage it. Originally he had mentioned going out on his motorcycle, but at the last minute decided he didn't even want Tony driving it. It was odd listening to Alex arguing with himself as he went back upstairs to put away the leather jacket and helmet, he had originally brought down to protect her.
At the sound of the door, Wendi looked up as Adam stepped onto the porch. He silently walked over and stiffly sat down next to her. Her whole body froze as she waited for him to berate her.
“You handled that meeting with Alpha Red well this morning.” He said. Wendi was shocked. She waited for him to say something else but he didn't. Instead he began to rock the swing back and forth
“Thank you. I honestly do think he will take good care of Leah. And just watching him, I do think he is her fated one.” Wendi said softly. It was plain that Jace was absolutely besotted with Leah. He looked at Leah, even more intensely than the Twins looked at her.
Adam just grunted in acknowledgement. “Sansa tells me that you've been taking Luna lessons. She says you've been reading our histories and learning our customs.” He said flatly.
“Alex has given me several volumes. I've already learned quite a bit. I honestly want to do a good job. I know I still have a lot to learn, but I'm willing to do whatever it takes to protect these people. It really is my heart's desire to see them thrive.” Wendi said as she looked at her feet and wondered where this conversation was going.
“I can respect that.” Adam said. “And I believe that you love my boys, as much as you're capable.”
She wondered what he meant by that. Did he not think that humans had the same capacity to love as wolves. She was beginning to think that might be the heart of the problem. Maybe he honestly thought she could hurt the Twins in some way.
“I do love the boys, and I would do whatever it takes to make them happy.” Wendi said with conviction. She didn't know how to make him see that she thought the sun rose and set in them. Or how to explain a devotion that she didn’t even understand.
“You're still human.” Adam said roughly.
“That's not something I can change. All I can do is my best.” She tried to explain. Wendi didn't know how to explain that although being human made her different, it didn't limit her capacity to put the Pack first.
She got the feeling this was Adam's attempt at trying to fix things between them. It was piss poor, but it was an attempt. It wasn't everything she had hoped for, but it was a start.
“Look” she said. “I don't expect you to like me, but I really need you to not hate me. The Twins love you, and they love me. I hate seeing the family divided like this. I promise you that I will do everything in my power to be a good Luna.” Wendi almost sounded like she was pleading. She felt like if she could just get him to make this one concession, they had a chance of someday being able to at least tolerate each other. She wanted to love him. She wanted to be a good daughter-in-law. But more than anything she wanted the Twins to have their family back
“I don’t hate you anymore, but you can't give my son’s an Alpha heir. Leah's children will be Redheart’s. My family legacy will be gone.” Adam explained and for the first time when he began to understand his hesitation about wanting her to be a mate to Alex and Leo.
She realized she might have been acceptable to Adam if she had only been mated to one of the Twins, leaving the other free to produce a purebred Alpha. As far as he was concerned, any children born by Wendi would be a little more than human. She could see his frustration.
“You’re right, I can’t give birth to wolves. Your grandchildren will be Lycans. They will be the best of both worlds, stronger than wolves and more noble than humans. Your legacy will be the fact your grandchildren will change the world.”
“If only that were true, but Lycans died out many years ago.” Adam grumbled. She could tell by his voice that he considered the whole thing to be a fairy tale.
“That's because wolves stopped mating with humans. After the wolf wars, warriors thought human mates made them weak, so they started rejecting them. That's why the Lycans died out. All the information was in the history books that I've been studying. Now that wolves are willing to take human mates, the Lycans will return.” Wendi explained as Adam stared at her.
“Are you sure about this? Why hasn't this ever been brought up before?” Adam asked with a raised eyebrow. He almost looked like he thought she was making all this up.
“I think people stopped studying about human mates. Wolves separated themselves from humans. Humans forgot shifters existed. They weren't mating together anymore. Lycans, double mate bonds and human mates became bedtime stories.” Wendi said as she scrubbed the toe of her sandals along the porch as the swing rocked back and forth.
She thought maybe Adam would argue with her but instead he sat quietly like he was considering what she had said. “I guess it would explain, why the moon goddess allowed such a union.” He said dismissively.
“Will you do me a favor?” Wendi asked. “Will you go find Alex and Leo and tell them that you and I are okay. Will you please go give each of your family members a hug? If they refuse, tell him I ordered it.” She gave him a shy smile as he got up off the swing and walked back to the door.
“Thanks Luna,” he said as he walked away.
