Chapter 649 I Don't Want to Go Back
After Matthew and Victoria left, I called Maria and Kimberly to come with me. Seeing my troubled expression, Kimberly quickly said, "Ms. Johnson, don't stress about it. I think Matthew's heart is with you. He probably has his reasons for getting close to Victoria."
I looked at Kimberly, surprised. I knew Matthew wouldn't share his plans with her, yet Kimberly had managed to read the situation so accurately just from their brief meeting at the airport. I couldn't help but admire her insight once again.
We returned to DreamBuild Group. During my absence, Willard and Kimberly had managed the company so well that there was nothing left for me to do. This left me feeling a bit useless. I had been idle in Everglade City, and I thought returning to Skyhaven would keep me busy. But it turned out there was still nothing for me to do.
Not wanting to be too idle, I asked Maria to drive me to Summit Innovations Group. Upon arrival, I found that Kimberly and Lally had also managed things there exceptionally well, leaving me with nothing to do.
"Well, it seems I'm not needed anymore," I said with a wry smile.
"That's not true, Emily. We still need your leadership and direction," Lally quickly responded, standing beside me.
I glanced at her and said, "I never knew you were so good at flattery."
Lally stuck her tongue out at me playfully. Just as she was about to speak, there was a knock on the door. After I gave permission, Lucas walked in. He looked a bit uneasy and seemed like he wanted to say something, but upon seeing Lally, he changed his mind. "I'll come back after you're done talking, Ms. Johnson," he said.
As he turned to leave, I called out, "Come back."
"I'll step out for now, Ms. Johnson," Lally said, understanding the situation. She left the room, closing the door behind her.
With no one else around, I turned to Lucas and said, "Alright, it's just us now. What do you want to say?"
Lucas hesitated for a moment before finally speaking, "Ms. Johnson, I need to go back to QuantumWorks Group."
I nodded and said, "That's fine. You belong to QuantumWorks Group, so it's normal for you to return."
"But I don't want to go back," Lucas said, mustering the courage to look at me.
This surprised me. Lucas was Samuel's relative and assistant, so it made sense for him to be at QuantumWorks Group. Why didn't he want to go back now?
My mind flashed back to the time when Shirley was embezzling. Lucas had a crush on Sienna's assistant, Layla. Although Layla no longer worked at Summit Innovations Group, they were both still in Skyhaven. If Lucas returned to QuantumWorks Group, the distance between them would grow.
Understanding the situation, I asked tentatively, "Is it because of Layla?"
Lucas nodded, looking a bit embarrassed. "Emily, you know I like Layla. I pursued her for a long time before she finally agreed to be with me. If I leave now, I'm afraid she'll leave me. Could you call Mr. Harris and ask him to let me stay at Summit Innovations Group? I promise to work hard and manage the company well."
Lucas raised his hand as if taking an oath, and I quickly stopped him with a sigh.
I wanted to tell Lucas that if their relationship couldn't survive his return to QuantumWorks Group, it wasn't strong enough to begin with. But then I thought about how difficult long-distance relationships could be. Their relationship was already fragile, and distance would likely lead to a breakup.
Seeing Lucas's pleading eyes, what else could I do?
