Chapter 49 - The Meeting in Shadows
Chapter 49 - The Meeting in Shadows
The message haunted Serena all night.
You can’t save him. But you can save yourself. Meet me tomorrow. Alone.
She didn’t know if it was Isla, Crane, or another enemy lurking in the dark. But the weight of it pressed like a stone on her chest. She couldn’t ignore it—not when Damian’s world already dangled by a thread.
By dawn, she’d made up her mind.
Damian stirred beside her, still asleep, his features softer in slumber than in waking life. For a moment, she let herself trace his jawline with her eyes, memorizing the man who could break her heart with just a glance.
Then she slipped out of bed, careful not to wake him.

The address in the message led her to an underground jazz club downtown. The kind of place where shadows clung to the walls and smoke hung thick in the air.
It was just past noon, but the club was alive—dim lights, brass instruments crooning, laughter masking deals made in corners.
Serena’s pulse thundered as she pushed through the crowd, scanning faces. She half-expected Damian to storm in at any moment, his stormy gaze pinning her in place.
But then she saw him.
Nathaniel Crane.
He sat at a booth in the far corner, his suit impeccable, his smile sharp as glass. When his eyes locked on hers, he rose smoothly, gesturing for her to join him.
Her steps felt heavier with each one she took.
“Mrs. Wolfe,” he greeted, his tone dripping with charm. “You look even lovelier without your husband glued to your side.”
She stiffened, sliding into the booth across from him. “Why did you want to meet me?”
Crane leaned back, folding his hands. “Because you’re smart enough to realize Damian Wolfe is a sinking ship. And I’d rather see you swim than drown with him.”
Her jaw tightened. “You don’t know anything about me.”
“Oh, I know enough.” His smile widened. “I know Damian is unraveling. His enemies are circling. His so-called empire is bleeding from the inside. And I know he’ll drag you down with him, because that’s what Damian does. He takes. He consumes. And when the walls fall, he never looks back.”
Serena’s chest ached with Isla’s words echoing through his. He consumes. And when he’s finished, he leaves nothing but ashes.
“Why are you telling me this?” she asked, her voice trembling.
Crane leaned forward, his tone lowering. “Because I like survivors. And I think you are one. I want to offer you a choice, Serena. Walk away from Damian. Come to me. I’ll protect you. I’ll make sure you have the life you deserve.”
She froze. “You’re asking me to betray my husband.”
“I’m asking you to save yourself,” he countered smoothly. “When Wolfe Enterprises collapses—and trust me, it will—you’ll be the one branded as the gold digger who hitched herself to a doomed man. Unless you step aside now. Unless you choose wisely.”
Serena’s heart pounded. The flash drive in her purse felt heavier than ever. Crane was offering her escape. Safety. But it came laced with venom.
“You destroyed lives too,” she whispered. “You’re no different from him.”
Crane chuckled, low and dangerous. “Ah, but I’m honest about it. Damian lies—even to himself. And he lies to you.”
Her throat tightened. “And what makes you think I’d ever trust you?”
“Because you already came here,” he said simply, his smile cold. “You already questioned him enough to walk through those doors. That means I’ve won half the battle.”
Serena’s stomach twisted. He wasn’t wrong.

Before she could respond, the door of the club swung open.
Damian.
Her blood froze as his eyes swept the room, landing on her with lethal precision. His face hardened, every line etched with betrayal and fury.
“Serena.” His voice carried like a blade cutting through smoke.
Crane stood slowly, his smirk widening. “Ah, speak of the devil.”
“Stay out of this, Crane,” Damian growled, striding toward them.
But Crane didn’t move. He slipped a hand casually into his pocket, eyes glittering. “Or what? You’ll destroy me like you destroyed Isla’s family? Serena knows the truth now. Doesn’t she?”
Damian’s gaze flicked to her, searching, pleading.
Serena’s breath caught. Her pulse roared in her ears. Damian’s world, Crane’s temptation, Isla’s warning—it all collided in that one suffocating moment.
“Serena,” Damian said again, his voice rougher this time. “Tell me you didn’t come here to make a deal with him.”
Her lips parted, but no words came.
And Crane leaned closer, his whisper dripping with poison. “Choose, Mrs. Wolfe. Love… or ruin.”
