Chapter 48 - Love or Ruin
Chapter 48 - Love or Ruin
Serena stared out the bedroom window, the Manhattan skyline stretching endlessly before her, glittering like temptation. Yet all she saw was the shadow of Damian’s confession.
Because I love you.
The words should have healed her. They should have melted the wall she’d built around her heart. But instead, they pressed like a stone on her chest, heavy and suffocating.
Love from Damian Wolfe wasn’t flowers and promises. It came laced with contracts, secrets, and blood on the ledger.
She wrapped her arms around herself, whispering into the night, “What are we doing?”

The next morning, Damian was already gone when she entered the kitchen. A note lay on the counter in his sharp handwriting:
Serena,
I’ll be late tonight. Please wait for me. We need to talk.
Her chest tightened. Talking meant more explanations, more justifications. Could she stomach hearing him defend what he’d done to Isla’s family again?
She pressed the note flat against the counter and walked away, her footsteps echoing in the empty penthouse.

By afternoon, she found herself in her mother’s hospital room. The steady beep of the monitor was a balm compared to the chaos of the penthouse. Her mother’s eyes fluttered open, soft and tired, but they lit up when they saw Serena.
“You look pale, sweetheart,” her mother whispered. “Is he treating you right?”
The question sliced Serena open. She sat on the edge of the bed, brushing her mother’s hand. “It’s… complicated.”
Her mother gave a weak smile. “Love usually is. But you know what’s not complicated? Right and wrong. Don’t let anyone blur that for you.”
Serena swallowed hard, her throat tight. She wanted to tell her mother everything—the flash drive, Isla, Damian’s confession—but the words lodged in her chest.
Instead, she whispered, “What if the right thing breaks my heart?”
“Then you’ll survive it,” her mother said softly. “You’re stronger than you think.”

Back at the penthouse that night, Serena paced the living room like a caged bird. Damian’s note still burned in her purse, but the clock ticked past midnight with no sign of him.
She poured herself a glass of wine, her hands trembling, when the door finally clicked open. Damian walked in, his tie loose, his eyes shadowed with exhaustion.
But beneath the fatigue, something else burned—a determination so fierce it made her chest tighten.
“Serena,” he said, his voice rough. “We can’t go on like this.”
She set down the glass, her pulse quickening. “You think I don’t know that?”
He crossed the room, closing the distance, his gaze locked on hers. “I’ve fought for everything in my life. Power. Respect. Survival. But with you…” He stopped, dragging a hand through his hair. “With you, I don’t know how to fight without destroying the very thing I’m fighting for.”
Her eyes blurred with tears. “Damian, I don’t want to be another one of your conquests. I don’t want to be collateral damage.”
“You won’t be,” he said fiercely, gripping her shoulders. “I won’t let you.”
“But how can I trust that?” Her voice cracked. “You destroyed Isla’s family, Damian. What happens when someone else stands in your way? Will you ruin them, too? Will you ruin me?”
The question hung between them like smoke.
For the first time, Damian didn’t answer with cold logic or ruthless certainty. Instead, he dropped his hands, his voice quiet but raw. “I don’t know.”
Serena’s breath caught. The honesty cut deeper than any lie.
She turned away, wiping her tears. “Then maybe we shouldn’t be doing this.”
A long silence stretched, heavy with the weight of goodbye.
But then Damian’s voice cut through, low and resolute. “If it’s between love and ruin, I’ll choose love. Even if it means tearing down everything I’ve built.”
Serena spun back, her heart slamming against her ribs. “What are you saying?”
“I’m saying I’ll walk away from Wolfe Enterprises. From my family. From everything.” His jaw set. “I’ll burn it all down if it means keeping you.”
Her knees nearly gave out. “Damian…”
“You wanted the truth,” he said, stepping closer. “The truth is, none of it matters without you. The company. The empire. The name. None of it means a damn thing.”
His words washed over her like fire and ice. Part of her wanted to believe him, to fall into his arms and let the world disappear. But another part whispered Isla’s warning: He consumes. And when he’s finished, he leaves nothing but ashes.
Serena’s phone buzzed on the counter, jolting her from the moment. She glanced at the screen—another unknown number. Her stomach dropped.
Damian frowned. “Who is it?”
She didn’t answer. She just stared at the phone, the buzzing filling the silence, until it stopped.
And then a message appeared.
You can’t save him. But you can save yourself. Meet me tomorrow. Alone.
Her hand trembled as she locked the phone, slipping it into her pocket before Damian could see.
“Serena?” he pressed.
She forced a shaky smile. “It’s nothing.”
But her heart screamed the opposite.

That night, as Damian slept with his arm draped across her waist, Serena lay wide awake, staring at the ceiling.
Love or ruin.
She didn’t know which path she was on anymore. All she knew was that the choice would come sooner than she wanted.
And when it did, someone—maybe both of them—would burn.
