I couldn't shake the feeling that Ruby was planning something big. And then, just as we were starting to relax, we received an invitation to a charity gala at Ruby's family estate.
"It's a trap," Aiden said, his eyes narrowing. "She's trying to lure us in."
But I was curious. What was Ruby planning?
"Let's go," I said. "We can't let her dictate our lives."
Aiden nodded, and we made plans to attend the gala.
As we arrived at the estate, I could feel the tension in the air. Ruby was waiting for us, a sly smile spreading across her face.
"Welcome, Hayley and Aiden," she said. "I've been waiting for you."
And then, just as we were about to enter the ballroom, Ruby dropped a bombshell.
"You see, Hayley, I've discovered a little secret about your past," Ruby said, her eyes glinting with malice. "A secret that will change everything."
My heart sank. What did Ruby know?
We stepped outside, away from the chaos of the gala. Aiden's eyes searched mine, looking for answers.
"Hayley, why didn't you tell me about your father?" he asked, his voice laced with hurt.
I took a deep breath. "I was ashamed, Aiden. I didn't want you to know about my family's past. I wanted to keep it separate from us."
Aiden nodded, but his expression was still uncertain. "I understand. But Hayley, can I trust you? Can I trust that you'll always be honest with me?"
I felt a pang of fear. Was I going to lose him?
"Aiden, I promise. I'll always be honest with you. I love you."
Aiden's eyes softened, and he pulled me into a hug. "I love you too, Hayley. But we need to be open with each other. No more secrets."
I nodded, feeling a sense of relief. We were going to make it through this.
But just as we were about to go back inside, I saw a figure watching us from across the room.
My father.
He looked angry, and I knew that this wasn't over yet.
We stepped outside, away from the chaos of the arrest. Aiden's eyes searched mine, and I could see the questions burning in his mind.
"Hayley, why didn't you tell me about your father?" he asked, his voice soft but laced with hurt.
I took a deep breath. "I was ashamed, Aiden. I didn't want you to see me differently. I wanted to earn your love on my own merit, not because of my family name."
Aiden nodded, understanding in his eyes. "I get it. But why didn't you tell me about the investigation?"
I sighed. "I didn't know, Aiden. I swear. I had no idea my father was in trouble again."
Aiden's expression softened. "I believe you, Hayley. But we need to talk about this more. We need to figure out what it means for us."
I nodded, feeling a sense of relief. We were going to work through this together.
But just as we were about to go back inside, a voice called out.
"Hayley, wait!"
It was my father, standing across the lawn, a look of desperation on his face.
"Hayley, please. You have to listen to me. I can explain everything."
I felt a surge of anger. What could he possibly say to make things right?
I hesitated, unsure of what to do. Aiden's hand on my arm tightened, as if sensing my uncertainty.
"Let's hear what he has to say," Aiden said, his voice firm.
I nodded, and we walked towards my father.
"Please, Hayley, just listen," he said, his eyes pleading. "I know I've made mistakes, but I love you. And I want to make things right."
I crossed my arms, trying to protect myself from his words.
"Talk," I said, my voice firm.
My father took a deep breath. "I know I've been involved in some shady dealings, but it was all for our family's future. I wanted to provide for you, to give you the best life possible."
I raised an eyebrow. "By breaking the law?"
My father nodded. "I know it was wrong, but I was desperate. And I got in too deep. But I promise, Hayley, I'm trying to make things right. I'm cooperating with the investigation, and I'll do whatever it takes to regain your trust."
I studied his face, trying to read his expression. Was he telling the truth?
And then, just as I was about to respond, Aiden spoke up.
"I think we've heard enough," he said, his voice firm. "Hayley, what do you want to do?"
I took a deep breath, trying to process everything. And then, I made my decision.
"I need time to think," I said, looking at my father. "I need to process everything."
My father nodded, understanding in his eyes. "I get it, Hayley. Take all the time you need."
Aiden's hand on my arm tightened. "We'll get through this together, Hayley."
I smiled, feeling a sense of gratitude towards him.
As we walked away from my father, I knew that I had a lot to think about. Could I ever forgive my father for his mistakes? And what did this mean for my future with Aiden?
But as we reached the car, I saw a surprise waiting for me.
Ethan, Aiden's brother, was standing by the car, a smile on his face.
"Hey, Hayley," he said. "I heard about what happened. I'm so proud of you for standing up to Ruby."
I smiled, feeling a sense of gratitude towards him.
But then, Ethan's expression turned serious.
"Hayley, there's something I need to tell you. Something about Aiden's past."
My heart skipped a beat. What could Ethan possibly know about Aiden's past?
