Chapter 86

“I'm so sorry it took us a while before we finished up with cleaning up, and treating the wounds.” The doctor said to them.

“How is our son now, doctor? Is he fine? Should we be worried?” Beta Lily asked impatiently.

“He had fragments of glass in his skin, but thankfully we were able to get it all out. So, he has passed the critical stage. Also, the glass didn't affect any delicate part of his body. So, he will definitely be fine.” The doctor explained, and Scott's parents sighed.

“Can we see him now?” She asked again, worry etched on her face.

“Oh, no. At least not yet.” The doctor refused, “Please give us a couple of hours to observe him. We'll monitor his response to treatment, and his response will determine whether or not you'll be able to see him, or leave him to rest.” He continued, explaining the situation.

“Please, we'll be quiet.” She tried to talk her way into making him let them see their son.

“I'm sorry, but I'll have to turn you down. He really needs to be alone. I'm so sorry.” He insisted, but she still tried to protest.

“Let's just go with what the doctor has said.” Beta Richard held onto his wife's arm gently and she finally succumbed.

“You can go home. I promise I'll call you once you can see him.” He advised, but she shook her head, not accepting.

“No way. I'm not leaving my son here. I'll wait here until I can see him with my eyes and ensure that he is truly fine.” She said, and took her seat before they could say anything to stop her.

The doctor slowly turned to Beta Richard and he signalled to him to leave them. He nodded and left, while Beta Richard crouched in front of his wife.

“I know what you want to say. I know you want to tell me to go home, but I'm not going to go anywhere.” She stood her ground, refusing, before he could even say a word.

“Lily.” He began, calmly. “We need to go home. Just look at our clothes.” He said to her, and at that moment she looked at her clothes, which were still stained with blood.

“We don't want people to start asking us questions when they see us like this. It will only call unnecessary attention, which we definitely do not need.” He continued, as calmly and reasonably as possible.

“The doctor said he will call us. Let's trust him. Staying here won't make him get better sooner, since we are not the doctors.” He stated, and she stared deep into his eyes.

He paused for a moment.

“Yes, Lily. Staying here won't change anything. Also going home right now doesn't mean we care about our son less. No one can care for him the way we would.” He continued, and she looked away.

“I know you love Scott as much as I do. So, please let's just go home, get a change of clothes and then we can come back. Who knows, the doctor might call us before we get back.” He said, shrugging, and this time, she agreed with him.

He helped her get up, and they both slowly walked out of the hospital, and into their car. Beta Richard then drove them home.

As they arrived back home, all the servants looked confused, seeing as Scott didn't arrive with them, but no one was willing to ask any questions for fear of ticking the couple off. They could only whisper their thoughts to each other, making sure their bosses didn't hear their gossip.

As they got into their room, Beta Lily immediately took off her clothes and held it in her hand, staring at the bloodstained clothes, which had now dried up, leaving a stain.

Holding on to the clothes, she broke into tears.

“Lily… what is the matter?” Her husband immediately rushed to her side, holding her. She had tried to hold her tears while they were at the hospital and all the way home, but now, she could no longer hold it in.

“I don't want to lose my baby. I don't want to lose another child.” She cried out into his shoulder.

“Don't talk like that, Lily. The doctor has assured us that he will be fine. Please don't be negative.” He pleaded with her, as he comforted her.

“That was the exact same words the doctor used years ago, but we lost his sister right after. Don't you remember?” She said, amidst sobs.

Beta Richard tried as much as he could to be the man, holding back his pain and hurt as the memories of that painful day came back flooding his mind.

“I remember, Lily, but Scott's case is different. Please don't say anything negative. Please, Lily. Let's be positive. I'm sure Scott wouldn't want you to be like this.” He said, hoping that his words would comfort her.

“But I don't want to lose my son. I want to be right by his side.” She said still crying.

“You won't lose him. We won't lose him.” He assured her, wiping her tears with his hands.

“No, I think I'm failing at motherhood again.” She suddenly said, shocking her husband.

“What?!” He exclaimed, taken aback. “Don't say that, Lily. You're doing an amazing job. Not everyone can do what you have done and not everyone is as strong as you are. Don't ever say you are failing, because no other person does it better than you.” His calm and soothing words were all she needed at that moment, as she remained in his arms.

After a moment, she was able to calm down, and finally was able to freshen up. Beta Richard also freshened up, and had a change of clothes.

“Should we leave now?” She asked, and before he could reply, there was a knock on the door.

“Yes, who is it?” Beta Richard asked, his voice hoarse.

“It's me, Veronica.”

He glanced at his wife, and she nodded. “Come in.”

The door opened slowly, and Veronica walked in.

“How are you, Veronica?” He asked her.

“I don't really know.” She responded, and he nodded knowingly.

“You're worried about Scott, right?” He asked and she nodded in response.

“Don't worry, he will be fine. The doctor said he needs to rest.” He explained to her and she nodded.

“Can I go with you to see him when next you're going?” She asked.

“Oh no. Even we can't see him yet. He still needs to be monitored.” He responded, and she muttered, ‘oh’.

“But-” She tried to talk her way through, but was interrupted by Beta Richard’s raised hand.

“You'll see him when he gets back.” He said firmly.

Beta Richard suddenly narrowed his eyes, his expression, changing, and his wife immediately knew he had something to say.

“What is it?” She asked him, trying to understand the reason for his reaction.

“Can I ask you for a favour?” He asked in a low tone, and she nodded slowly.

He signalled to her to lean closer to him, and he whispered some words into her ears. She took a quick glance at Veronica who was still standing, and her eyes darted back to her husband, and she nodded. He then got up, walking towards Veronica.

“Come on, let's go.” He said plainly to Veronica, without much details of where they were going to, and without asking any questions, Veronica followed him.
