CHAPTER EIGHTY-NINE: PROJECT X.
Four months later...
MILES:
Despite my efforts to locate her, Meredith managed to elude me. She did an excellent job of hiding, but I was even more determined. My sources eventually tracked her down to a remote island in Africa where she had flown to. I had no intention of disrespecting her wishes, nor did I want to leave her alone. From a distance, I kept a close watch on her, deploying my men strategically and occasionally flying down myself to observe her activities.
She volunteered at a local zoo, dedicated to wildlife conservation. It was evident she hadn't forgotten about me, as she often drunkenly confessed how much she missed me and our intimacy. On such nights, I would escort her back to her apartment. I admit, I even observed her in private moments, finding myself mirroring her actions. However, despite the satisfaction, I grew weary of this distant observation. I longed to be close to her, to have her by my side.
Meanwhile, Steele sold the stadium to me, with the condition that I played golf with him once a week until I married Meredith. Zara didn't hesitate to scold me for letting Meredith slip away. Steele also agreed to collaborate with me on a new project called Project X.
I provided the police with the recording of Louis's confession, which proved instrumental in convicting most of those involved. I enlisted the help of my resources from Russia and Italy to aid in the case. The hospitals implicated in the underground ring were shut down, and pressure was applied to the doctors involved, including Neymar and Britney. Thanks to Christian, justice was served for numerous victims and their families. I secured full rights to the lenses, which seemed to function only with me, perhaps recognizing my connection to Christian's heart.
It has been four months since then. In secret, I acquired the wildlife institution where Meredith worked and invited them to today's event, which was a children's charity program that was initially scheduled while Neymar was still with me, but due to circumstances, I postponed it. A month ago, I rescheduled it, knowing it would bring joy to Meredith and the children. Instead of holding it at a children's hospital or orphanage, I chose Steele Football Stadium, a location endorsed by the players and Steele's family."
"I had everything decorated in gold and white, with balloons floating around, creating an entertaining atmosphere for the kids and a romantic one for Meredith. I played with the children, mingled with the adults, took photos, and cracked jokes, all while keeping an eye out for her. If she refused to be with me after today, I had a plan to simply kidnap her. I was determined not to spend a single day without her by my side. No excuses.
After several speeches, it was finally my turn to address the audience. The representatives from the wildlife institution and other guests had arrived. I scanned the audience, but she was nowhere to be seen. Did she not come? Was she truly that determined to sever ties with me? Damn it, Meredith.
As I stepped onto the stage amidst roars and cheers, I began my speech. "Hello, everyone. You all know I'm not one for long speeches because they bore me to death." The crowd erupted in laughter, briefly lifting my spirits. "But seriously, these past few months have been tough, especially with my girlfriend's absence. Not literally gone, but figuratively. Before I continue, I'd like to apologize to the public for initially misleading them about my relationship. Believe me, I've learned the hard way not to upset the public. They made sure my stock prices crashed. Fortunately, they forgave me, and we're doing well."
More laughter filled the air.
"Thank you, Steele, for forgiving me and entrusting me with this new venture. I promise to cherish it and ensure its growth. As of today, I'm putting aside all other projects of the Pierce Empire to focus solely on Project X, initiated by Christian Tate and managed by Meredith Tate." With a wave of my hand, images of Christian were projected around the stadium, and fireworks in his likeness shot into the air. Additionally, servers wearing suits adorned with Christian's face on the back moved through the crowd. "This is to honor Christian Tate."
While applauding, a reporter asked, "Who was Christian Tate?"
"Well, in summary, he founded 'Eagle's Eyes,' which oversees the hydroelectric project that Mr. Alan Stalker claimed it as his own. He was killed due to his innovative ideas. To honor him, Pierce Empire has decided that the proceeds from Project X will be directed to Miss Tate, the sole living relative and sister of Christian Tate. The remaining funds will be allocated to a charity foundation established in his name. This foundation will support victims of organ harvesting and human trafficking, provide compensation for their families, and fund initiatives aimed at combating these crimes. We are committed to ensuring that the legacy of this courageous inventor, who gave his life to protect his work, is known to all."
The crowd broke into a cheer, clapping, and whistling.
"To conclude my rather dull speech," I announced, eliciting laughter from the crowd. "Meredith, I'm not sure if you're here, but I know you'll be angry with me for not respecting your wish to let you go. But I can't. Your brother gave me his heart, and you've stolen my soul. Woman, I know you're wild, but without that spark, I'm empty. Please, give me another chance at love. Let me make amends. Take my hand, let's face these challenges together."
With a wave, I began descending the stairs through the cheering crowd. However, despite the excitement, I couldn't shake off a sense of unease. I wished she had come. Meredith, please--
"You're even crazier," her soft voice interrupted as I bumped into her, not paying attention to my surroundings.
Turning my gaze from her feet, I noticed she was wearing black heels paired with a form-fitting silk wrap dress in neon green. Adorned with a black choker and matching black chandelier earrings, her hair was styled in a ponytail, with natural makeup enhancing her smile.
"Baby? You're here?"
"Yes."
I kissed her passionately, disregarding the risk of ruining her makeup. My heart overflowed with joy and satisfaction, a whirlwind of emotions swirling within me. My girl had come.
