Chapter 260 You Have No Right to Question Me
Joseph immediately dropped his playful demeanor and helped Sophia into the passenger seat.
David hesitated for a moment but eventually got into the back seat of Joseph's car.
The car sped through the night, and Sophia briefly explained the situation, carefully omitting the part where she and David had been in a compromising position due to their clouded minds.
Joseph ran several red lights, getting Sophia and David to the hospital as quickly as possible.
Mainly to get Sophia there; David was just along for the ride.
If he could, Joseph wouldn't have let David in his car at all.
Joseph dumped David at the emergency room entrance and hurried off with Sophia. David told the ER staff to just give him a quick check. Sophia was pregnant and needed Alan to take a good look at her.
David was usually the center of attention wherever he went, but with Joseph, he was unceremoniously discarded.
Fortunately, Joseph had some decency and messaged Daniel on the way, telling him to get to the hospital immediately.
Daniel lived close to the hospital and arrived almost at the same time as David. He took David from Joseph, feeling his feverish body, and quickly pieced together what had happened.
Being too handsome and rich wasn't always a good thing!
Which crazy woman had targeted David this time?
Complaining didn't stop him from working.
While they were busy, Joseph had already taken Sophia to Alan's office.
Alan carefully examined Sophia and found she was in decent shape, having only inhaled a small amount of an aphrodisiac gas.
Even without Alan saying it, Sophia had guessed. Her cheeks flushed, and she felt a wave of heat in her chest, struggling to suppress the strange sensations in her body.
Many people thought that the only way to relieve the effects of an aphrodisiac was through sex. But that was not true; modern medicine could solve it with a simple injection. For those with strong willpower, they could just tough it out.
Like Sophia, who, as a pregnant woman, couldn't take medication and had to endure it.
David was luckier. With the help of a nurse, he got an injection and gradually returned to normal, his mind clearing.
"Daniel, can you check where Sophia is?"
"Sure, Mr. Jones. Just sit here and don't wander off. I'll be right back." Daniel was genuinely exasperated with David's knack for getting into trouble. A day without some kind of incident would feel downright strange.
When David saw Sophia again, she was lying in a hospital bed.
David angrily grabbed Joseph by the collar, demanding, "What happened to her? What did you do to her? We were exposed to the same toxin, so why am I fine while she's still unconscious?"
"Where are you getting 'unconscious' from? Look at her—she's just sleeping!"
To ease Sophia's discomfort, Alan had used hypnosis to help her sleep. The last thing they needed was David's loud voice waking her up.
"Can you keep your voice down? You sound like the loudest person in the whole hospital."
Joseph's disdain was evident. David was hot-headed and not too bright. What had Sophia ever seen in him?
"Let go," Joseph's face darkened. He wanted David to release him on his own, but David's grip remained tight, his fingers digging into the fabric, his anger clear.
Joseph frowned slightly, a hint of displeasure in his eyes.
Out of respect for Sophia, Joseph didn't want to fight David, but David seemed incapable of understanding. Annoyed, Joseph placed one hand on David's wrist and pushed with the other, forcing David to let go.
Joseph was the Miller family's top heir, and they valued not just his abilities but also his physical prowess.
Joseph was the best among the Miller family's younger generation.
Despite his playboy facade, he was as skilled as a trained special forces soldier. He and David were evenly matched, but Joseph easily pried David's hand off.
"I've known her longer, I care about her more, and I worry about her health more than you do. David, all the danger Sophia's been in is because of you! You have no right to question me. Maybe you should take a hard look at why you've got people coming after you constantly, and why they keep getting to you. Until you sort out your issues, I don't want you near Sophia."
Yeah, what right did he have to question Joseph?
He was the reason Sophia kept ending up in the hospital, the reason she faced danger repeatedly, and the reason her heart was hurt time and again.
Without him, Sophia's life would be much happier.
But why did it hurt so much to think about leaving her life forever?
"Daniel, let's go."
Daniel respectfully followed the dejected David.
A dark glint flashed in Daniel's eyes. They'd had peace for too long, and even he had grown complacent. It was time to tighten security at Vanguard Innovations Group.
Meanwhile, back with Sophia.
Once David left, Joseph walked over to Sophia and tapped the nightstand with his fingers.
"Alright, stop pretending. I know you're not asleep. So, what's going on with you two? Do you still have feelings for him?"
"No."
Sophia played with her fingers as she answered.
"Come on, you can fool others, but don't fool yourself. You always play with your fingers when you lie. You still have feelings for him."
Joseph pitifully rested his head on the edge of the bed's armrest.
"Sophia, look at me. I'm actually quite excellent."
"Yes, yes, you are the best."
Sophia brushed him off and closed her eyes, pretending to sleep again.
"How did you two run into each other?"
"Pure coincidence. I went to the Wesley's, and he happened to be there. Who knows why he was there."
Joseph thought for a moment.
"I think I know. Rumor has it that the Jones family wants to acquire all the research results from Harmony City University's physics lab."
"What? He's a businessman. Why is he meddling in our scientific research?"
"It's unavoidable. In recent years, Harmony City University's physics department has been severely underfunded. Without money, how can they conduct experiments? The Jones family is willing to cover all the department's expenses, which is actually helping them."
Joseph suddenly grinned.
"So, in a way, David is now your sponsor."
