Chapter 67 chapter 67
Chapter 67
Karl narrowed his eyes, “Are you sure?”
Before Sopia could say anything, he opened the file in front of him, “According to what I have here, you are married to Dr. Tyron Hart, so how could you not know his first wife?”
“I…”
“Are you deliberately lying to the police? Do you know that you are obstructing justice?”
“I did not lie. You did not specify which Clara Hart you were talking about.”
“Oh, how many Clara Harts do you know?” Karl asked. He even had a curious expression on his face as if he could not wait.
“I…”
“Sophia Blackwood, when did you get married to Dr. Tyron?”
“A few years back. We got married after his wife died.”
“How did his wife die?”
“I don’t know, isn’t that your job to find out. Looks like you are just wasting my time. I would love to leave, please.”
“You shamelessly destroyed someone’s marriage and even killed her. Doesn’t your conscience hurt when you sleep at night?”
Sophia’s expression changed. “What nonsense are you spewing? I did not kill anyone. You can’t accuse me like that without evidence. I can sue you.”
“We have evidence, and I am not talking nonsense.”
“What? You have evidence? Where is it? Show me.” Sophia almost shouted.
Karl gave out a cold chuckle, “Why should I show you? Are you the judge? Do you work in the police force?”
“I…”
Sophia was just a village woman with a simple mindset, so she could not compare to the shrewdness of seasoned officers like Karl.
With just a few words from Karl, her countenance cracked.
Karl did not want to scare her off, so he looked at her and waved his hand, “You may leave now.”
Sophia was stunned, “What? Just like that?”
“What? We are done here. You are a law-abiding citizen, so we don’t have a reason to keep you here.”
“See, I told you. I don’t commit crimes.”
“Uhm, before you leave, could you tell me something?”
“What is it? Do you want to arrest me?”
Karl laughed, “Don’t let your mind run wild. From the files I have here, you stated that Clara Hart’s accident, which unfortunately led to her death. Do you mind recounting what happened?”
Sophia’s mind raced. They had been dragged to the police station back then to give statements about Clara’s death because they were her immediate family. They had already planned on everything they would say, but it had been so long; would she really be able to remember everything? What if she said something wrong and ended up ruining everything?
“Officer, I don’t know what you are talking about. I don’t know how that woman died. All I know is that she died from a road accident.”
…
When Sophia arrived home, her heart was still beating wildly. She found Tyron sitting in the living room, and he seemed to be in deep thought.
“Where have you been? I have been trying to reach you for a long time, but I couldn’t.” Tyron asked the moment Sophia entered the house.
“I was summoned by the police,” Sophia said, her face still pale. She had a bad feeling about everything that just happened.
Tyron stood up immediately he heard Sophia, “What did you just say?”
“I just came from the police station. That officer said that you also had been there. What was it about?”
“They were inquiring about Clara’s accident. I was just summoned out of the blue.”
“Tyron, I think we are in deep shit. Do you think the police have managed to find anything linking us to Clara’s death?”
“I don’t know, I just don’t understand the game they are playing. I think you should call Vivian and ask her to come home ASAP. We need to leave the city as soon as possible.”
“What do you mean? Why would we leave? Even though we might have taught that bitch a lesson, it was only because she was trying to expose you.”
“Mind how you speak,” Tyron said. He was clearly irritated by everything that was going on.
“Just call Vivian and tell her to come home. The police may or may not have discovered anything just yet, and they are just trying to scare us. We still need to be cautious.”
“Fine, I will call her and ask her to come home.”
“Good. I will go and fetch our passports. We're leaving right away.” Tyron said. He knew how relentless and stubborn Natalie was. With how the police have started to summon them, it would only be a matter of time before the case is cracked.
“Mom, what happened? You sounded quite urgent over the phone.”
Tyron emerged with their passports and a small briefcase that contained his recent research.
He looked at Vivian and said, “I have already informed my assistant to book our flights. Our Uber is already here, so let us go.”
“Wait, Dad, what is going on? Where are we leaving for?”
“Anywhere as long as we are out of the city.”
Vivian looked between her parents and asked, “Can someone please explain to me what is going on?”
“The police summoned your mom and me today regarding Natalie’s mom’s case. I didn’t know that she was at the police station until she came home.”
Sophia spread her arms, “I did not know that he was there either.”
“Wait, what are you saying? The police summoned you?”
“Yes. I am afraid that they might have found something on us, and that was why I am saying that we should leave right away.”
“Dad, wait, calm down, please. Sit down and tell me everything. What exactly did the police want from you?”
“They just asked to recount the events that happened on the day Clara was involved in the ‘accident’. We were primary witnesses in that case, and since they reopened it, the officer said that it was natural that we be summoned.”
“What about you, Mom? What did they want from you?”
“The same thing,” Sophia said. She did not seem to be too bothered by what was happening.
“I think that the police might be onto something. Dad, we should leave, or maybe we should just sell this house and move somewhere new before the police come banging on our door.”
Just as Vivian’s words fell, the doorbell rang.
The three looked at each other, and Vivian spoke up first, “Dad, Mom, were you expecting anyone?”
Both Sophia and Tyron shook their heads at the same time.
“Who could it be?”
