Chapter 33 chapter 33
Chapter 33
“At first, I actually thought that it was some kind of a joke, but dad has already remarried.”
Sean did not know what to say, and the only thing he could do was hug Natalie tightly.
“Honey, I am so sorry.”
“Do you know what’s even funny?”
Sean looked at her and shook his head. He could tell that Natalie was in so much pain, and he just did not know how to make it go away.
Natalie chuckled, but it was a self-deprecating laugh. Looks like the universe has decided to mock her again.
“The woman who cost me my marriage back then is the same person calling Tyron my dad!”
“What?” Sean was stunned.
He thought about it before he said, “So, it might not have been a coincidence that the two met back then?”
“I am also thinking the same thing. But I never suspected anything from the start. She never even tried to get close to my family, but things seemed to have changed right after I left.”
“So, what are you going to do about it?” Sean asked.
“I honestly don’t know. I never expected this from my dad. I mean, my parents were always loving, and all these years, my dad never had a scandal. They were my role models, and I always envisioned having a marriage just like theirs. Now, I don’t even know what to think anymore.”
“Is your dad a hundred percent sure that the person is his daughter? Or is he being blackmailed?”
“I was so shocked that I did not even have time to ask for details. But from how he acted, he already accepted them as his family, so whether she is his biological daughter or not, it does not really matter.”
Sean and Natalie sat in silence, and none of them had the urge to speak.
After what seemed like forever, Natalie spoke up, “Can you help me request a leave day from the director?”
Sean immediately nodded. Natalie was not in her best condition, and if she went to work, she would only be torturing herself.
He took out his phone and called the director. After hearing that something had happened to Natalie, he immediately approved her leave without asking questions.
“Dr. Sean, take Dr. Hart home and let her have as much rest as she needs.”
“Thank you, Director Martin.”
“Can you take me home?” Natalie said in a small voice.
“Sure.”
Sean drove out of the hospital gates and headed towards Natalie’s mansion. Natalie leaned her head back in the chair and closed her eyes. Her face was pale, and her mood was really low.
Just what had her mother endured before her death? Did she know that her husband had another family outside before she died?
What did her father tell her after she found out the truth? Did they argue?
When she was feeling this much pain as a daughter, then just how much pain and humiliation had her mother suffered?
As all the thoughts were swirling in her mind, forming a complicated web of emotions in her heart, Natalie finally realized something: she hadn’t been such a good daughter to her mother.
She was not there for her mother when she needed her the most. She had been so focused on her own pain that she did not even stop for a moment to think about her mother.
Natalie opened her eyes. Something in them had shifted, and Sean was afraid of what she would do next, because as much as he thought he understood Natalie’s every expression, for the first time, he could not fathom what was going on in her mind.
He was about to say something, but Natalie spoke up first, “Can you take me somewhere first?”
“Sure.” Sean nodded without hesitation. Although they were only a few miles from her house, he turned the car around without hesitation.
When Natalie reached the cemetery, she knelt in front of her mother’s grave. Her shoulders shook lightly, and no words escaped her lips, no matter how much she tried to speak.
Sean moved some meters away, just enough to keep an eye on Natalie. He took out his phone and activated a number that had been inactive for far too long.
He dialed a number that he had memorized, and the call rang once before it was answered.
A trembling voice came from the other side of the phone, “Boss, is that really you? Are you… have you really called me?”
“Colins, I need you to look into someone for me. Get all the information to the tiniest details. I am giving you one hour.”
Colins swallowed hard, “Uhm, boss, who?”
“Doctor Tyron Hart.” As Sean mentioned the name, he looked at Natalie, who was still silently sobbing on her mom’s grave.
“Got it, boss. I will get back to you as soon as possible.”
Sean cut the call without saying anything. He wanted to buy some time before he could finally reveal himself to the world, but he couldn’t bear to see Natalie in pain.
…
Colins stood in the middle of his office, and his heart almost jumped out of his chest. Before he knew it, a single tear dropped on his already darkened phone screen.
After a while, he started laughing like a maniac as he jumped up and down inside his office.
“Whoa, the boss is back. The Boardroom Beast is actually back. Haha, this is the fucking happiest day of my life. Yay!”
“But wait, the boss did not sound right, and he did not mention anything about taking the company back. He wanted me to help him look into someone. I… I'd better get to work before the boss thinks that I have become incompetent while he was away.”
Forty-five minutes later, Sean received an email notification on his phone.
He opened it and looked through it roughly before he nodded in satisfaction.
Just then, his phone rang. It was a call from Colins, “Well, boss, did you receive the file I just sent through email?”
Sean nodded, “Yeah, good job, Colins. You did well.”
Colins thought that he was hearing things after Sean praised him. He smiled sheepishly, and he almost thought that he was going to faint from the sudden happiness.
But he did not have the guts to accept the compliment, so he spoke in an even voice, “Nah, boss, it was nothing. Actually, I think that I have become a bit rusty.”
“Hmm, then you should polish your skills more, or you are fired!”
Colins was stunned. What prank was God playing on him now?
He cleared his throat and quickly said, “Uhm, boss, I was just kidding. Your humble servant will accept your compliment then!”
But he only realized that Sean had already hung up the phone before he could even finish speaking.
He gave his mouth a tight slap as he mumbled, “Next time, don’t just open and spew nonsense.”
