Chapter 301 Unmasking Each Other

Chapter 301 Unmasking Each Other
Scarlett's POV

The next morning arrived with Manhattan's usual energy buzzing outside the Langley estate windows. I sat in my father's study, fingers dancing across my encrypted phone as I composed the message that would set everything in motion.

Steven, I need you to make an announcement immediately. The AI system we've been developing with Rothschild Corporation has encountered a critical malfunction. Tell them Dr. Sterling will arrive today to personally resolve the crisis.

The response came within seconds. Understood. What about our inside contact?

Make sure Garth receives the same information. He'll pass it along to his real employer.

I leaned back in the leather chair, watching the morning light stream through the tall windows. The plan was simple in theory—use my Dr. Sterling identity as bait to draw out Scythe. But Gabriel was right to be concerned. We were walking into unknown territory with a master manipulator.

My phone buzzed with Gabriel's reply: Cooperation R&D department is prepared. They're expecting Dr. Sterling within the hour.

Perfect. I gathered my disguise materials from the secure briefcase hidden in my father's safe. The high-grade silicone mask felt strange against my skin as I applied it carefully, transforming my features into those of the mysterious Dr. Sterling. Long brown hair cascaded over my shoulders, and amber-tinted sunglasses completed the transformation.

The rear entrance of Rothschild Corporation buzzed with discrete activity. The CEO's private elevator carried me directly to the cooperation research and development floor, bypassing the main lobby entirely.

Lowell Warren was waiting when the elevator doors opened, his face lighting up with the kind of excitement reserved for meeting one's hero.

"Dr. Sterling!" His voice cracked slightly as he extended his hand. "This is such an incredible honor. Your work on integrated biotechnology has been revolutionary. I've read every paper you've published, and your theories on neural enhancement—"

"Lowell." Gabriel's voice cut through his cousin's enthusiastic rambling. "Dr. Sterling doesn't have time for fan meetings."

I accepted Lowell's handshake, noting how his palm was slightly damp with nervousness. "It's quite alright, Mr. Rothschild. I appreciate Lowell's dedication to the field."

Gabriel's eyes met mine briefly, a silent reminder to stay in character. "Dr. Sterling, perhaps we should examine the malfunctioning system immediately."

I followed them through the state-of-the-art research facility, genuinely impressed by the advanced equipment. The AI system we'd supposedly been collaborating on was actually quite sophisticated—Gabriel's team had done excellent work creating a believable cover story.

"The neural network appears to be experiencing recursive loops," Lowell explained, gesturing toward multiple screens displaying complex data patterns. "We've tried standard debugging protocols, but the system seems to be learning to circumvent our fixes."

I nodded thoughtfully, examining the displays. "Interesting. The patterns suggest the AI has developed a form of survival instinct."

Gabriel stepped closer. "Dr. Sterling, perhaps we should discuss this privately? The technical details might be... sensitive."

The conference room door closed behind us with a soft click. Adam Hamilton stood guard outside with Michael and Brian, ensuring our privacy. The moment we were alone, I pulled off the amber sunglasses and began removing the silicone mask.

"How do I look?" I asked, shaking out my natural hair.

Gabriel's expression softened. "Like the woman I fell in love with."

I felt warmth spread through my chest at his words, but forced myself to focus. "If this works, we'll finally meet the puppet master behind everything. The one pulling Scythe's strings."

"And if it doesn't work?"

"Then we'll improvise." I stepped closer, studying his face. "You're certain you want to risk this with me? Once I leave this building as Dr. Sterling, there's no telling what we'll encounter."

Gabriel reached out, his fingers gently touching my cheek. "I told you before—wherever you go, I go. That hasn't changed."

Something shifted in the air between us. Before I could second-guess myself, I rose on my toes and pressed my lips to his. The kiss was soft at first, then deeper as his arms encircled me. For a moment, the dangerous plan, the mysterious enemies, everything else faded away.

When we finally broke apart, both of us were breathing hard.

"For luck," I whispered, already reaching for my disguise.

I returned to the back entrance of the Rothschild Group, where my car and driver were waiting for me. For the first few blocks on the road, everything seemed normal. Then, I noticed the black SUV in the rearview mirror—it was cautiously following us at a distance, making the same turns as we did.

"We have company," I murmured.

My driver's shoulders tensed slightly. "I see them."

The SUV made its move as we turned onto a quieter side street. It accelerated suddenly, cutting us off and forcing us to stop.

Aria Werner stepped out of the SUV, looking every inch the composed businesswoman in her tailored navy suit. But I caught the subtle bulge of weapons beneath her jacket.

"Dr. Sterling," she called through the window, her smile perfectly calculated. "My employer would very much like to meet you."

"I insist that my driver remains unharmed," I said, rolling down the window.

"Of course." Aria's smile never wavered. "He'll come with us for his own protection."

We rode in tense silence through Manhattan before arriving at a private helipad. The military-spec helicopter was ready, its rotors spinning. As we lifted off over New York Harbor, I watched the city shrink below.

A luxury yacht appeared on the horizon, straight out of a billionaire's fantasy. As we landed on the helipad, I noticed the ship's impressive size and discreet security—strategically placed cameras and crew members moving with military precision.

Aria escorted me through opulent corridors lined with priceless artwork. The main salon was a study in understated wealth—Italian leather furniture, crystal chandeliers, and panoramic windows overlooking the Atlantic.

A figure stood silhouetted against the windows. The black hooded robe concealed his build, and a matching mask covered everything except his eyes. But something about his posture, the way he held his shoulders, struck me as familiar.

"Dr. Sterling," his voice was carefully modulated, but underneath the electronic distortion, I caught something that made my pulse quicken. "Thank you for accepting my invitation."

Aria retreated, leaving us alone in the spacious salon. The man in black turned to face me fully, and those eyes—pale blue and intelligent—studied me with uncomfortable intensity.

"You have me at a disadvantage," I said, keeping my voice steady. "You know who I am, but you remain... mysterious."

"Mystery has its purposes." He moved closer, and again that nagging sense of familiarity tugged at my mind. "Your work fascinates me, Doctor. Your ability to blend cutting-edge technology with practical applications..."

There. When he said 'applications,' his voice dropped slightly, and I caught the natural cadence beneath the disguise. My heart started racing as pieces clicked into place.

I reached up and slowly removed my amber sunglasses, letting him see my eyes clearly for the first time. His sharp intake of breath confirmed my suspicion.

"Interesting," I murmured, then pulled off the long brown wig, letting my natural hair fall free. "Very interesting indeed."

His hands clenched at his sides. When I began peeling away the silicone mask, revealing my true face inch by inch, he took an involuntary step forward.

"Scarlett!" The name exploded from his lips, all pretense of electronic disguise forgotten.

I smiled, dropping the mask to the expensive carpet. "Hello, Everett Carter."

For a moment, neither of us moved. Then his hands went to his hood, pulling it back to reveal perfectly styled dark hair. The black mask followed, and suddenly I was face-to-face with the man who was supposed to be my fiancé.

Everett's pale blue eyes were wide with shock, but underneath I saw something else—fear. His confident posture had crumbled, replaced by the nervous energy of someone whose deepest secret had just been exposed.

As for me? I felt nothing but relief. Finally, after all the mysteries and manipulations, I was looking at the face of my enemy.

"Well," I said conversationally, "this certainly explains a lot."
