Chapter 300 The Sudden Sister
Chapter 300 The Sudden Sister
Scarlett's POV
The morning sun streamed through the tall windows of the Langley estate, casting long shadows across the marble floors. I had just finished reviewing some medical files in the study when urgent knocking shattered the peaceful silence.
"Boss! Something terrible has happened!" Iris's voice carried a note of panic I rarely heard from my AI assistant.
I immediately set down my papers and moved toward the source of the commotion. "What's the situation?"
"Another Calista has arrived, claiming she needs to harm Liam and Luna," Iris reported through the estate's communication system. "Two identical Calistas are fighting in the main living room. I cannot distinguish which one is the real Calista Harper."
My blood ran cold. Another Calista? The implications hit me like a freight train. I sprinted toward the living room, my mind already calculating the possibilities. The Dark Organization had sent someone else—someone who looked exactly like Calista.
The scene that greeted me in the living room was pure chaos. Two women, identical in every way, were locked in brutal combat. Chairs were overturned, expensive vases lay shattered on the Persian rug, and the Langley family members had retreated to the far corner, shielding Liam and Luna behind them.
"Scarlett, what in God's name is happening here?" Zoey demanded, her arms protectively wrapped around the children. "How did another Calista suddenly appear?"
I watched the fighting women carefully, looking for any distinguishing features. Both moved with identical grace, both had the same fierce determination in their eyes. But there had to be something—some tell that would reveal which was which.
Then I saw it. One of them, the one closer to the children, briefly touched her left temple with three fingers—a gesture so subtle that anyone else would have missed it. It was a silent signal I'd taught my Shadow Group members years ago.
"That one," I pointed to the woman near the window, "is the imposter."
Without hesitation, I joined the real Calista in subduing the fake one. The woman fought like a caged animal, but between Calista's skills and my own, we managed to pin her down within moments.
Just as we secured her, the imposter bit down hard on something concealed in her mouth. A thin trickle of blood appeared at the corner of her lips.
"Poison!" I shouted, immediately checking her pulse. "She's trying to kill herself!"
I grabbed my emergency medical kit from my bag and quickly administered a universal antidote, forcing it between her lips despite her weakening struggles. The poison was fast-acting, but I'd seen its effects before in the field.
"Auntie! Auntie!" Liam and Luna suddenly broke free from Zoey's protective embrace and rushed toward the unconscious woman.
My heart stopped. "You know her?"
"Yes, that's our Auntie!" Luna explained, tears streaming down her face. "She took care of us before we came to find you, Mommy!"
Calista knelt beside the unconscious woman, her face a mixture of recognition and horror. "Those bastards from the Dark Organization," she whispered, her voice shaking with rage. "They actually dared to torment my sister like this!"
Sister. The pieces clicked into place with devastating clarity. This wasn't just any imposter—this was Calista's twin sister, the one who had been caring for Liam and Luna before they found me.
"Don't be afraid," I told the children, pulling them close. "Mommy will do everything in her power to save your aunt. She's going to be fine."
An hour later, we were in the Langley family's private medical facility. The CT scans confirmed my worst fears—Calista's sister had a liquid chip implanted in her brain stem, just like the one I found in Calista.
"Look at these scars," I murmured as I examined the unconscious woman's body under the medical lights. Years of abuse were written across her skin in faded marks and old wounds. "She's endured so much suffering."
Calista stood beside the examination table, tears flowing freely. "She's been missing for over five years," she said, her voice breaking. "From childhood to now, I can't imagine how much abuse and torture she's endured. Those people are monsters. They deserve to die!"
I placed a steady hand on her shoulder. "I'll perform surgery to remove the chip from her body, so she'll never be under the Dark Organization's control again."
"The Dark Organization will soon discover that your sister's mission has failed, so there's no need for us to hide anymore," I said to Calista. "I'll remove the chip from you as well."
After successfully extracting both chips through delicate microsurgery, Calista asked me about our next move.
I looked up from the microscope. "Gabriel and I have already planned our next move. Tomorrow, we'll have Dr. Sterling appear at Rothschild Corporation to lure Scythe out."
Calista's eyes widened. "You're going to expose the Dr. Sterling identity?"
"It's time to end this," I replied firmly. "I need you to stay here at the Langley estate to protect Liam, Luna, and your sister."
I connected Calista's chip to the computer, attempting to establish direct contact with the other party.
I sent: Are you Scythe?
The response came immediately: Very clever, Shadow. Yes, I am Scythe.
My fingers tightened on the keyboard. Why do you want to kill two innocent children?
Those children were never meant to exist in this world, came the chilling reply. I created them, so it's only natural that I should end them now.
Rage flooded through me, but I forced myself to remain calm. What gives you the right?
Tell me, Shadow, Scythe's message continued, do you care so much about these little creatures because they carry your blood, or because they represent the genetic fusion of you and Gabriel Rothschild?
I stared at the screen, my heart pounding. That's none of your business.
Originally, we intended to use Victoria's genetic material combined with Gabriel's to create experimental subjects, Scythe replied. But those fools mistook you for Victoria and used your genetic material instead. Damn it.
But Scythe wasn't finished. I must confess, I've admired you for many years. You're quite remarkable—Dr. S and Shadow. Such talent deserves better than this charade.
You know my identities? I typed, though I wasn't really surprised.
I've been watching you for years, Scythe continued. You and I could be perfect partners, capable of building a genetic empire together. When I complete my great work and become humanity's supreme leader, you would be the irreplaceable queen at my side.
I stared at the message, my mind working rapidly. This was clearly a madman with delusions of grandeur, but he was also dangerous enough to have orchestrated all of this. I couldn't outright refuse—not when he might have more information I needed.
Instead, I kept my response neutral: An interesting proposition.
I look forward to the surprise you'll bring me, Scythe replied, his confidence evident even through text.
I powered down the communication device and leaned back in my chair. The pieces were finally coming together, and tomorrow's plan to lure him out was more crucial than ever.
Scythe had no idea what kind of surprise I actually had in store for him.
