Chapter 29 The dinner…

The outcome of the meeting with the HR team was to show up at the next event I was invited to with Lila, looking like the perfect couple. 
“I hope you can do that?” I said to Lila who nodded quickly.
“I’m going to give it my best, I promise, you’re not going to regret this.” She chimed in and I could see that subtle excitement on her face. 
She was really eager to make it up to me and that somehow made me happy. Atleast she recognizes that what she did was wrong and wants to make it right. 
“I guess that’s what I saw in her and the reason why she’s Mrs. Sterling.” I muttered under my breath as I walked into my room. 
I had such a long day and after a quick shower, I went straight to bed and slept off. I was woken up by the alarm clock on the bedside. It was time to get prepared for the dinner or we’d be late. 
I got up, went into the closet and in another thirty minutes, I was all dressed up. I made sure I was smelling so nice and then stepped out.
I got into the living room and sent one of the maids to get Lila but before I could finish, she appeared and my goodness, she was breathtaking. 
Every time when I try to control myself, she pulls me back with her mesmerizing beauty. I was dumbfounded and couldn’t stop staring. I couldn’t even say a word and she didn’t try to interrupt me either, she just let me feast on her body till she felt I’d had enough.
“Uhm, I think we should be on the way now or we’d be late.” She cleared her throat gently and said. That pulled me back from my thoughts and I cleared my throat too. 
“Yeah, I was just checking to see if you got into the dress code.” I tried to come up with an excuse and she just nodded like she didn’t really know I was lying. 
“Let’s go then, the driver is waiting,” I retorted and we went out. 
We got in the car and the driver zoomed off. Throughout the drive, no one said a word. We just sat there on the two sides, each drowning in our own thoughts. 
When we finally arrived, I turned to her and she looked eagerly to hear what I wanted to say.
“You’re aware there’s still s scandal out there so tonight has to be perfect. We have to show them that we are that happy couple and no trouble is looming in our paradise contrary to what they think.” I let out.
“Yes, I got it and I’m really sorry for causing you trouble. It’s not going to happen again.” She chimed in softly and that just melted my earth the more. 
“Good, let’s get out there in their faces then.” I replied and we got out. 
The moment they sighted us, the cameras and lights switched to us and the flashes went off in all directions. We let them take all the pictures too. We stared in each other’s eyes like two lovers madly in love, and I leaned over to kiss her. 
Cheers went off, murmurs too but we didn’t care. They are doing exactly what we want them to do. We want them talking about us and giving them drama will have them doing that. 
I was one of the people giving speeches so we were arranged to sit at the high table. We were ushered in and I made sure to kiss her all the way. Even after sitting, I didn’t stop and she played along reall well too. One would think she was really into the kisses. Ste blushed hard, smiled so sweetly and her words were so soft.
When I was called to give my speech, I planted a hard kiss on her forehead before climbing the podium.
“Good evening everyone, I’m excited to be here but before anything, I’d like to make it known that I’m here with my beautiful wife and I’d like her to join me here for a minute. Please join me as I invite my darling wife, Lila Sterling!” I let out and everyone cheered her. 
She dazzled as she slowly joined me and we hugged and shared a kiss.
“Hi everyone, thanks for having me here and to my husband, thank you for being the ever sweet romantic man of my dreams. I love you so much.” She chimed in and everyone cheered again.
“So, I know you’re wondering what’s going on. I’m supposed to be giving a speech and not showing off my marriage, right? Well, there’s a sandal in the air and that has set a bad precedent about my wife and I. Tonight, we’d like to clear that. There’s absolutely nothing happening in my marriage. We are fine and in love as ever so whatever news the opposition is trying to project is nothing but a lie. No one and nothing is ever coming in between my wife and I. Right, baby?” I said and then turned to Lila who moved closer to use the microphone too.
“Of course baby, this love is forever.” She said and just then, a voice rang out in the audience. 
“Well, I have a question then!” The lady asked and once I saw her face, my heart sank. 
“Ohh really?” Lila replied.
“Yes, darling billionaire wife, I have a question for you.” She replied sharply while Lila only smiled. 
“This isn’t a question and answer time but please go ahead,”
“Yeah, so you claim to love your husband so much and how he’s so good to you. The story on the streets says otherwise because your man is known to be the notorious playboy who is incapable of loving anyone other than himself. He only uses women so does that mean you’re lying? Maybe you did cheat on him because you’re happy and finding that somewhere else.” The lady let out and I was consumed with fear. I just knew Lila was going to fail this. I haven’t the best person to her and I doubt if she has anything good to say about me. She doesn’t even know me that well to pull off such question. It’s going to end badly if I let her answer. I have to do something to stop this right now.
“You know what…”
“I’ll answer her,” Lila cut in sharply, tapping me to step back which I did.
“Thank you for that beautiful question. I’m well aware of the stories about my husband and it’s not my place to deny them. I believe everyone has their realities and past. Whatever happened between him and those women stays between them. Daniel was a different person entirely when we met and this isn’t to invalidate the experience of those women. They are entitled to their opinions just like I am entitled to mine. Daniel is one of the few good men I’ve had in my life and that list is really short. He has my back always. He loves me not just with words but his heart and I could go on and on about with examples but tonight isn’t about that so I’m not going to dabble into that. Daniel Sterling is my husband and I love him with all my heart, even in my next life, I’d still choose him. I hope that clears your doubt, ma’am. I hope it does because I won’t be saying anything on that subject anymore. Thank you.” She finally stopped and everyone cheered. 
They were all impressed but not just as much as I was. I couldn’t even believe it was the same Lila standing beside me. I wasn’t expecting such excellence from her…
