Chapter 36 36
Lila’s breath came in short, shallow gasps as she stood with her back to Damien, her hands clenched tightly by her sides. The silence between them was suffocating, thick with unspoken words and the weight of everything that had been left unresolved. She could feel his presence behind her, a constant pressure she couldn’t escape, no matter how far she tried to distance herself. Every inch of her wanted to run, to leave him and never look back. But every inch of her also wanted to stay...to see if there was something left worth saving.
She knew better, though. She had seen the dark side of him, the manipulator, the monster he had become in his need for control. She had felt the sting of his cruelty, and there was no way she could simply forget that. She couldn’t ignore the man who had broken her..who had stripped her of everything, leaving only fragments of the woman she had once been.
But there was the pull, too. The desire. Her body responded to him in ways she couldn’t deny, no matter how much she hated herself for it. She had thought, for a long time, that the attraction she felt toward him was something she could ignore. But it wasn’t that simple. No matter how much her mind screamed at her to walk away, her heart....and her body...seemed to belong to him, even after everything.
“Lila…” Damien’s voice was softer this time, as though he were trying to reach her without frightening her away. She flinched at the sound of her name on his lips, his tone so intimate, so familiar, that it made her heart ache. But she couldn’t look at him. Not now. Not when everything inside of her was unraveling.
“Damien,” she said, her voice hoarse, a mixture of anger and pain lacing her words. “Please don’t do this. I can’t keep doing this with you. I can’t keep going around in circles.”
“You don’t have to,” he replied quickly, stepping closer, though not close enough to touch her. He sounded desperate, but there was something else beneath it. “You don’t have to keep fighting me, Lila. I know I’ve hurt you, and I can’t take that away. I can’t undo what I’ve done. But I can promise you that I won’t hurt you again. Not like that. I… I’ll do whatever it takes to prove it to you.”
Her heart twisted at the sincerity in his voice. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to trust him. But the damage was done, and the scars ran deeper than he could see. She had given him everything once before...her trust, her love, her heart...and he had shattered it. Could she give him another chance? Could she put herself at risk again?
Lila turned to face him, her eyes wet with unshed tears, though she refused to let them fall. She had cried too many times before, and she couldn’t do it again. She couldn’t let him see how broken she was. She couldn’t let him see that, even after all the hurt, there was still a part of her that wanted him. Needed him.
“You don’t get it, do you?” she said, her voice cracking. “You can’t just tell me that you’ll do better. You can’t just promise me that you won’t hurt me anymore. Because you already have. You’ve already broken me, Damien. And I don’t know how to pick up the pieces.”
His face darkened, the pain on his features evident. “I never wanted to break you, Lila,” he said, his voice low, almost pleading. “You have to believe me. I was scared. I was scared of losing you, of you leaving me like everyone else did. I thought if I kept you close if I controlled everything, I could keep you safe. But I see now that I was wrong. I see now that I’ve lost you, in a way that I can’t fix.”
Her chest tightened as his words hit her like a physical blow. It wasn’t just that he had hurt her....it was that, in his mind, he had done it for her good. To protect her, to keep her from leaving. But it wasn’t protection, she thought bitterly. It was control. It was manipulation.
“I don’t need your protection, Damien,” she said, her voice steady, though the tears were threatening to spill. “I need my freedom. I need to be able to breathe again. I need to find myself again, to remember who I was before you came into my life. I need… I need to stop needing you.”
The words felt like a lifeline, even though they stung. She didn’t know if she believed them yet, but she knew she needed to say them. She couldn’t keep holding onto him, not when it was clear that all he had to offer was pain and empty promises.
Damien’s face fell, his eyes dark with something like regret...or maybe shame. He didn’t speak for a long moment, as though weighing her words carefully. Then, with a deep breath, he finally spoke.
“I don’t know how to fix this,” he admitted, his voice soft, almost broken. “But I won’t stop trying, Lila. I can’t let you go. I’ve already lost so much, and if I lose you, too… I don’t know what I’ll have left.”
Lila shook her head slowly, her heart aching at the raw vulnerability in his voice. She could see the man he was, the man he wanted to be, beneath the layers of control and manipulation. But that man wasn’t the one who had hurt her. That man wasn’t the one who had kept her captive in her own life.
“I don’t know if I can keep fighting this,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t know if I can keep fighting you.”
For a moment, Damien stood there, as if lost, not knowing what to say. The tension between them hung thick in the air, heavy with everything that had been said..and everything that hadn’t. He stepped forward, closer this time, and Lila’s pulse quickened. Her body betrayed her, her heart racing as if she hadn’t spent months hating the very idea of him. As if he hadn’t torn her apart with his cruelty.
But she was stronger than that. She had to be.
“I don’t want you to fight me,” he said, his voice quiet but firm. “I just want you to come back to me. I want to fix what’s broken, Lila. But I can’t do that if you keep pushing me away. I can’t fix anything if you won’t let me try.”
She swallowed hard, trying to steady herself. His words pierced through her, making her heart ache with an old longing she thought she had buried. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to trust him again. But how could she? How could she trust the same man who had torn her apart so completely?
“I can’t make promises I can’t keep,” Lila said, her voice barely audible. “And I can’t let myself fall back into the same trap, Damien. I can’t lose myself again.”
“I won’t let you lose yourself,” he said, his eyes fierce with determination. “Not if I can help it.”
Lila’s gaze met his, and for the briefest moment, she saw the man she had once loved..the man who had held her, protected her, and cared for her in his way. But that man was still a shadow, still hidden beneath the layers of control and manipulation. She wanted to believe he could change. She wanted to believe that they could rebuild something together.
But the truth was, she didn’t know if she could ever forgive him. She didn’t know if she could ever be the woman he wanted her to be again.
“I need time,” she said, her voice a whisper of raw emotion. “I need time to figure out who I am now. And if there’s a place for you in that… I’ll find it. But I can’t do this right now. I can’t do this with you so close, reminding me of everything I’ve lost.”
Damien’s face hardened for a moment, but the pain in his eyes was undeniable. He nodded slowly, his lips pressing together in a tight line.
“I’ll wait for you, Lila,” he said, his voice low but resolute. “I’ll wait as long as it takes.”
And with that, he turned and left, leaving Lila standing alone in the middle of the room. Her heart was heavy with the weight of everything unsaid, everything still unresolved. The future was uncertain, and she couldn’t predict what it held.
But one thing was clear now, she wasn’t ready to let go of him yet. Not completely. And that frightened her more than anything else.
