Chapter 162 Better Than Henry?
Chapter 162 Better Than Henry?
Listening to her parents' unreasonable accusations, Sophia looked at the so-called parents before her and felt nothing but ridiculous sadness.
"So," her voice was calm but laced with bone-chilling sarcasm, "In your eyes, only Elora currying favor with the Windsor family matters. Only that counts as thinking about the family. Whatever I do, it's shameful? You believe everything Mrs. Windsor tells you? Did she mention that it's her son, Henry, who's pursuing me?"
Drew and Bianca were stumped by her question, their faces growing even grimmer.
Drew stubbornly argued, "So what? Since Mrs. Windsor doesn't like you, you should know your place and stay away from Henry!"
"Exactly!" Bianca picked up the thread, her tone suddenly softening with a condescending, charitable air. "We're all doing this for your own good. The Windsor family is beyond your reach. While you're still young, I've found you a suitable match. His family background isn't as impressive as the Windsors, but he's well-off and decent. He said he doesn't mind that you're divorced and will definitely treat you well. You're meeting him tomorrow!"
Sophia looked at Bianca's hypocritical expression and felt her stomach churn.
She laughed coldly, her tone resolute, "Not happening. My affairs don't require your concern. Who I choose to be with is my freedom—you have no right to interfere."
"You!" Drew trembled with rage, his pointing finger shaking. "You ungrateful daughter! Are you trying to kill me with anger?"
Just then, the front door opened—Elora was back from her date.
Seeing the tense atmosphere in the living room, especially Sophia's icy expression and Drew's flushed face, a flash of schadenfreude quickly crossed Elora's eyes before she immediately switched to an expression of worry and anxiety.
"Dad, Mom, Sophia, what's wrong? Why are you fighting again?"
She hurried forward, speaking in gentle, soothing tones while taking Bianca's arm and looking at Sophia. "Sophia, just tone it down a bit. Dad and Mom are getting older—they can't handle too much stress. Can't you just talk things through civilly?"
Her demeanor only made Sophia's current harsh attitude look worse by comparison.
Bianca immediately seemed to find her support, patting Elora's hand and sighing deeply, "Elora, you're so sensible and caring! Sophia completely fails to understand our good intentions for her!"
Elora gently consoled, "Mom, don't get upset. Sophia probably just can't think clearly right now."
She turned to Sophia, her tone carrying what seemed like sincere "comfort."
"Sophia, Mom and Dad are just thinking about your lifelong happiness. Henry may have great credentials, but his mother is so adamantly opposed—you two being together won't bring you happiness anyway. Why not meet the person Mom found for you? You might actually like him."
Sophia looked at Elora's disgusting, hypocritical act and felt nauseous.
"A blind date?"
"Yes, Mom specially found him for you. His family background is ordinary, but he has good character!" Elora smiled sweetly at Sophia.
"He's just about ten years older than you..."
"What's wrong with that? Older men know how to cherish women!" Bianca said dismissively from the side, as if Sophia was getting some incredible bargain.
Sophia almost laughed out loud.
She stared at Bianca and kindly suggested, "Since he's so great, why don't you marry him instead?"
"What nonsense are you spouting!" Bianca's face turned pale. "How dare you talk to me like that!"
Drew made threatening gestures while Elora started her tearful performance again.
Sophia watched this scene and found it utterly ridiculous.
She coldly interrupted their performance, "What's there to discuss with you? Should I talk about how you sacrificed my happiness to curry favor with the Windsor family? Or how you blindly believed Mrs. Windsor's words and assumed that I'm shameless?"
Her gaze inadvertently swept over Elora's slightly open neckline, where a small patch of suggestive red marks was barely visible.
The location was strategic—definitely not from normal bumps or scrapes.
Sophia's eyes flickered with a hint of suspicion.
Given Elora's usual character, shouldn't she be desperately throwing herself at Henry? Why had she been so quiet lately, even seeming less enthusiastic about Henry in her words?
Instead, there was a subtle feeling that she had found bigger backing?
Drew was furious at Sophia's defiance and brought the topic back with a commanding tone.
"In any case, you must break things off with Henry completely! And since you work at Windsor Group, help Elora out more. Find opportunities to put in good words for Elora in front of Henry Windsor and help them spend more time together! That's what you should be doing!"
Hearing this, the gentle smile on Elora's face stiffened almost imperceptibly before immediately switching to an even sweeter, more innocent expression. She gently shook Bianca's arm, her tone carrying a hint of coquettish complaint and seemingly casual boasting.
"Dad, Mom, don't worry about my affairs anymore. I've met someone who suits me much better. He treats me very well and is quite accomplished."
She paused, her eyes revealing a deliberately crafted happiness and sense of superiority. Her voice wasn't loud, but clear enough for everyone in the living room to hear, "And in terms of family background and capability, he's considerably better than Henry. So you really don't need to worry about my situation anymore."
These words were like stones thrown into a calm lake, creating ripples.
Drew and Bianca were both stunned, their faces showing uncertain surprise.
Better than Henry? What kind of family would that be? How had they heard nothing about this?
Sophia's suspicion deepened. Better family background than Henry?
In this city, even nationally, the forces that could definitively outrank the Windsor family could be counted on one hand.
When had Elora connected with such influential people?
And judging by her confident expression mixed with secretive pride, it didn't seem like she was lying.
Who could this person be?
She had no interest in staying to watch this family's duplicitous performance any longer. She coldly dropped one final line, "My affairs are none of your business. Elora's affairs are none of my concern. You'd better watch yourselves."
With that, she ignored Drew's furious shouting and Bianca's hysterical scolding behind her, turning decisively to leave this suffocating place.
