Chapter 82: The Massage
Chapter 82: The Massage
The massage continued with their hands linked between the tables. Laura felt each breath Leonard took, the way his fingers occasionally tightened around hers, the intimacy of this shared experience.
When the massage ended, the therapists left them to dress. Laura and Leonard released hands reluctantly, both moving behind their respective privacy screens to change.
"Well, that was..." Laura began.
"Intense," Leonard finished. "But nice. Really nice, actually."
They emerged fully dressed, both looking more relaxed than they had in days. Sarah appeared to collect them.
"You two were wonderful to work with," she said. "So much natural chemistry. I hope you have a beautiful wedding!"
"We're not—" Laura started again.
"Thank you," Leonard interrupted, taking Laura's hand and pulling her toward the exit before she could correct the assumption.
Outside the spa, Laura finally pulled free. "Why do you keep letting people think we're a couple?"
"Because it's easier than explaining whatever we actually are," Leonard replied. "And honestly, Laura, after holding your hand for an hour during that massage, I'm not entirely sure what we are anymore."
Before Laura could respond, an energetic resort coordinator appeared with a clipboard.
"Perfect timing! You're signed up for the couple's cooking class in twenty minutes. Follow me!"
She didn't wait for a response, already walking toward the resort's demonstration kitchen. Leonard and Laura looked at each other, both recognizing the absurdity of their situation.
"We should probably correct these misunderstandings," Laura said without conviction.
"Probably," Leonard agreed, but he held out his hand. "But maybe after the cooking class?"
Laura took his hand, letting him pull her toward whatever ridiculous couple's activity awaited them next. Because the truth was, pretending to be Leonard's partner for resort activities felt more natural than pretending they were just coworkers.
The cooking class was held in a beautiful demonstration kitchen with six cooking stations. Each "couple" had their own station with ingredients and equipment laid out.
The instructor, a jovial chef named Marco, welcomed them enthusiastically. "Tonight we're making a romantic three-course Italian meal! You'll work together to create the perfect date night dinner."
Laura glanced around and realized they were surrounded by actual couples—people who were genuinely together, who kissed between cooking steps and called each other pet names.
"This is mortifying," Laura whispered to Leonard as they put on matching aprons.
"Could be worse," Leonard replied. "At least we both know how to cook now."
Marco began demonstrating their first course, a caprese salad with homemade mozzarella. "Cooking together requires communication, compromise, and trust. Just like relationships!"
The other couples laughed knowingly. Laura and Leonard exchanged looks that acknowledged the irony, they needed to work on all three of those things.
As they worked on forming mozzarella, their hands kept bumping in the shared workspace. Marco walked by and commented, "You two move well together! Like you've been cooking side by side for years."
"We work together," Laura explained. "So we're used to collaborating."
"Ah, workplace romance!" Marco beamed. "Those are my favorite. Nothing sexier than a woman who can hold her own in a boardroom, am I right?" He winked at Leonard.
Leonard's ears turned slightly red, but he nodded. "Extremely sexy, yes."
Laura elbowed him, and he grinned, the first real, unguarded smile she'd seen from him in days.
The main course was handmade pasta with a complex sauce that required careful timing. Marco emphasized the importance of working as a team, how one person should handle the pasta while the other managed the sauce.
Laura took the sauce while Leonard worked the pasta dough. They fell into an easy rhythm, calling out timing updates and adjusting their processes to sync with each other.
"Taste this," Laura said, offering Leonard a spoonful of sauce.
He leaned in, maintaining eye contact as he tasted it. "Perfect. You're incredible at this."
"You're not so bad yourself," Laura replied, watching him roll out perfect pasta sheets.
Marco appeared again. "See everyone? This is what partnership looks like! They're not fighting over who does what—they're supporting each other's strengths."
He addressed the group: "The key to any successful relationship is recognizing that you're a team. Sometimes one person leads, sometimes the other. What matters is trust."
As they plated their pasta, Leonard leaned close to Laura's ear. "We are pretty good at this team thing when we're not sabotaging ourselves."
"Yeah," Laura agreed quietly. "We really are."
Dessert was tiramisu, which required delicate layering and precise timing. As they worked together, Laura became intensely aware of Leonard's presence beside her—the way he moved, the focus in his expression, the careful attention he paid to getting everything right.
"You have mascarpone on your cheek," Leonard said, reaching out to wipe it away with his thumb.
The touch lingered, his thumb tracing her cheekbone in a gesture that had nothing to do with removing food. Laura's breath caught, and she saw Leonard's pupils dilate with awareness.
"Final step," Marco announced, breaking the moment. "Each couple should feed each other a bite of their finished tiramisu. It's a traditional romantic gesture!"
Around them, couples were already complying, laughing and feeding each other with exaggerated romance. Laura and Leonard stood frozen at their station, spoons of tiramisu in hand, neither quite able to cross that particular line.
"We don't have to..." Laura started.
Leonard held up his spoon. "When in Rome?"
Laura opened her mouth, and Leonard carefully fed her the bite of tiramisu. The dessert was delicious, but she barely tasted it, too focused on the way Leonard watched her lips, the intensity in his eyes that suggested he was thinking about more than just dessert.
Her turn. Laura lifted her spoon, and Leonard leaned in, his eyes never leaving hers as she fed him the bite. His lips closed around the spoon, and Laura felt heat flood through her at the intimacy of the gesture.
"Beautiful!" Marco called out. "See everyone? That's amore!"
The class ended with applause and photos. As they cleaned their station, Leonard's phone buzzed with a message.
He checked it and his expression darkened. "Nathan needs me. Something about the board calling an emergency meeting tomorrow about the retreat extension costs."
"Now?" Laura asked, disappointment flooding through her.
"Now." Leonard looked at her with frustration that clearly matched her own. "Laura, we need to talk. Really talk. No more interruptions."
"I know. Tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow," Leonard agreed. "I don't care what crisis comes up. We're finishing this conversation."
As they walked back to their suite, Laura felt the weight of everything unsaid between them. They'd spent hours holding hands during a massage, cooking together like actual partners, feeding each other dessert.
But they still hadn't said the words that mattered most.
Tomorrow. They kept promising tomorrow.
Laura just hoped tomorrow would finally arrive withut another disaster to prevent them from admitting what everyone else seemed to already know...that they belonged together.
