Chapter 81: The Couples Activity Mix-up
Chapter 81: The Couples Activity Mix-up
Laura's father was stable by the time they reached the hospital. A minor heart episode, the doctors said, serious enough to warrant concern but not life-threatening. He'd need medication adjustments and lifestyle changes, but he would be fine.
Relief flooded through Laura as she sat beside his hospital bed, holding his hand while he slept. Her mother sat on the other side, exhausted but grateful.
"You didn't have to rush back," her mother said quietly. "But I'm glad you're here."
Laura stayed at the hospital through the night. Leonard waited in the lobby, refusing to leave until he knew Laura's father was truly okay. When dawn broke and the doctors confirmed the crisis had passed, Leonard drove Laura to her apartment.
"Get some sleep," Leonard said as they stood outside her door. "I'll handle things with the retreat."
"Leonard, about what you said before we left..."
"Later," he interrupted gently. "Your family needs you right now. We have time."
But as Leonard drove away, Laura wondered if they really did have time, or if the universe would keep throwing obstacles between them until they gave up entirely.
She slept for a few hours, then returned to the hospital. Her father was awake and grumpy about the bland hospital food, which her mother said was a good sign. Laura spent two days splitting time between the hospital and her apartment, barely thinking about work or the retreat.
On the third day, her phone buzzed with a message from Nathan: "Retreat extended by three days due to storm rescheduling. Please return when you're able. Leonard says no rush."
Laura stared at the message, torn between family responsibility and the unfinished conversation with Leonard that hung over her like a weight.
"Go back," her father said from his hospital bed, having noticed her distraction. "Your mother and I are fine. The doctors say I can go home tomorrow."
"Dad, I should stay..."
"Laura, whatever's bothering you won't get solved sitting in this hospital room. Go deal with your life. We'll be here when you get back."
Laura hugged her father carefully, promised her mother she'd visit next weekend, and drove back to Pine Summit Resort. The four-hour drive gave her too much time to think about what she'd say to Leonard when she saw him.
I love you too seemed too simple for the complexity of what she felt. But maybe simple was exactly what they needed.
She arrived at the resort at six in the evening to find it transformed. Somehow, during her three-day absence, the staff had reorganized everything. New activity schedules were posted in the lobby, and Laura noticed several couples walking around with matching retreat lanyards.
"Laura! You're back!" Nathan appeared, looking frazzled. "How's your father?"
"He's going to be fine. Thanks for asking." Laura gestured at the lanyards. "What's all this?"
Nathan's expression shifted to something uncomfortable. "Okay, so there's been a situation. The resort mixed up our booking with another group's reservation. We're now accidentally enrolled in their couple's retreat programming for the next two days."
"What?"
"I know, it's bizarre. But the resort is giving us massive discounts to accommodate the error, and honestly, the activities look fun. Team bonding through couple-based exercises, trust building, communication skills, that sort of thing."
"Nathan, we're a company retreat, not actual couples."
"I know! But they're calling everyone couples for the activities. Just go with it... it's only two more days, and then we go home." Nathan checked his clipboard. "You and Leonard are scheduled for a couple's massage in thirty minutes."
"A what?"
"Couple's massage. You're in the spa at seven. Don't be late... they're very strict about their schedule."
Nathan rushed off before Laura could protest. She stood in the lobby, still processing, when Leonard appeared from the direction of the elevators.
Their eyes met across the space, and Laura felt her heart skip. He looked tired, like he hadn't slept well during her absence. But when he saw her, his face transformed with relief.
"You're back," Leonard said, crossing to her quickly. "Is your father okay?"
"He's fine. Being released tomorrow." Laura gestured at the chaos around them. "Nathan told me about the mix-up."
"It's ridiculous," Leonard agreed. "But apparently we're stuck with couple's activities for the next two days. Starting with..."
"A couple's massage. I know."
They stared at each other, the absurdity of the situation clear to both of them.
"We could skip it," Leonard suggested, though he didn't sound convinced.
"Nathan said they're strict about scheduling. And honestly, after three days at the hospital, a massage sounds amazing."
"Then let's go get massaged, I guess."
The spa was located in a separate building, all natural wood and soft lighting. A cheerful attendant greeted them and led them to a private room with two massage tables positioned side by side.
"Welcome! You must be the Contis," the attendant said, checking her clipboard.
"Actually, we're..." Laura started.
"We're the Conti party, yes," Leonard interrupted smoothly.
The attendant smiled. "Wonderful. Your couple's retreat package includes aromatherapy, hot stone treatment, and our specialty tension relief massage. Just change into these robes, and your therapists will be in shortly."
She left them alone in the room. Laura looked at Leonard, then at the robes, then back at Leonard.
"This is going to be awkward," Laura said.
"Extremely," Leonard agreed. "But we're adults. We can handle lying on adjacent massage tables for an hour."
They changed in separate corners of the room, carefully not looking at each other. Laura emerged in her robe feeling exposed despite being fully covered. Leonard looked equally uncomfortable in his.
Two massage therapists entered, a woman named Sarah and a man named David. They instructed Laura and Leonard to lie face down on the tables, then began working with practiced efficiency.
For the first ten minutes, Laura focused on relaxing. The massage was incredible, Sarah's hands finding knots Laura didn't know she had. The soft music and candlelit atmosphere created a peaceful cocoon.
Then Sarah said to David, "These two have so much tension in their shoulders. Must be stress from wedding planning, right?"
"Wedding planning?" Laura's head jerked up.
"Oh, we shouldn't have assumed," Sarah said quickly. "But you're here for the couple's retreat, so we thought..."
"We're not engaged," Leonard said from his table. "Just... coworkers."
"Coworkers who share couple's massages?" David sounded skeptical. "That's an interesting workplace dynamic."
Sarah laughed. "Well, engaged or not, you two definitely need this tension relief. I haven't seen this many knots since the last couple who came in fighting about china patterns."
The therapists continued working, occasionally commenting on similar tension patterns in both Laura and Leonard's bodies, how their stress seemed to mirror each other, how couples who worked together often carried matching physical stress.
"You can tell when couples are in sync," Sarah said conversationally. "Their bodies respond similarly to pressure, they breathe at the same rhythm. You two are very connected, even if you don't realize it."
Laura felt her face burning. Lying here with Leonard just feet away, being told by strangers that their bodies were in sync, felt more intimate than any conversation they'd had.
"Turn over, please," Sarah instructed.
Now Laura was face up, able to see Leonard on the table beside her. Their eyes met, and she saw the same awareness in his expression that she felt.
The therapists worked on their arms and hands. At one point, Sarah guided Laura's hand to rest on a pillow between the tables—right next to where David had positioned Leonard's hand.
Their fingers were inches apart. Laura stared at Leonard's hand, remembering how it had felt holding hers, how his touch always seemed to ground her.
As if reading her mind, Leonard's pinky finger stretched slightly, brushing against hers. The contact was barely there, but Laura felt it like electricity.
"You two are holding hands," David observed with approval. "That's wonderful. Physical connection during massage deepens the bonding experience."
Laura started to pull away, but Leonard's hand shifted to hold hers properly, fingers intertwining. She looked at his face and saw a slight smile playing at his lips.
"Much better," Sarah said warmly. "Couples who maintain physical connection show higher relationship satisfaction."
