060: Journey to Abeokuta 2
Richard nodded, a smile playing on his lips. "Yes, that's true," he admitted. "But at what cost, John? At what cost?"
And as the meal progressed, Mr. John Adebayo turned to Sophia with a warm smile. "How is the pounded yam and egusi soup?" he asked, curious about her thoughts.
Sophia, still savoring the flavors, suddenly coughed as a bit of pounded yam went down the wrong way. Managing to compose herself, she turned to John, her voice slightly hoarse. "May I have some water, please?" she asked, her throat still feeling the effects of her coughing fit.
Noticing her struggle and need for water, John quickly called out to his eldest son, Tolu, who was nearby. "Tolu, please bring our guest a bottle of water from the refrigerator," he instructed.
Turning to Sophia, John apologized for his son's oversight. "I'm sorry about that, Sophia. Tolu should have been more attentive," he said, his expression apologetic.
Sophia then reassured him. "It's quite alright, Mr. Adebayo. I appreciate the gesture," she replied, grateful for the hospitality.
Curious about the refrigerator's location, Sophia offered to get the water herself. "May I ask where the refrigerator is? I can fetch it myself," she said politely, showing her willingness to help.
However, John insisted that as their guest, she should not worry about such things. Instead, he called out to Tolu once more, teasingly mentioning that any mishap involving him standing up would be a story they wouldn't want to recount in the future.
Tolu, slightly embarrassed, hurried to the refrigerator, and before John could finish his sentence, returned with not just one, but four bottles of chilled water. John, however, couldn't resist a playful scolding. "Tolu, you should have known to do this without being reminded, especially with guests around," he chided, though his tone was light hearted.
After Sophia gulped down the water, she turned to Kourtney and asked if she needed any. Kourtney nodded eagerly, and Sophia handed her the bottle. As Kourtney drank, she mumbled a "thank you" between sips. Just then, John turned to Harry, a glint of curiosity in his eyes.
"You've never even once brought anyone along with you," John remarked, his tone laced with curiosity. "These people must be really special to you."
Richard's smile widened as he glanced at Sophia and Kourtney. "They are," he replied, his voice filled with warmth. "Sophia and Kourtney are special to me. In fact, Sophia is more than special; she's someone I want to spend the rest of my life with."
John's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "So, you've found yourself a wife," he said, a smile playing at his lips. "That's wonderful news!"
Richard nodded, his gaze softening as he looked at Sophia. "Yes, I have," he confirmed. "I've found the one I want to settle down with."
As Sophia observed the unfolding conversation, Kourtney, with her typical childlike curiosity, turned to her mother. "Mommy, what did your friend mean when he said we're special to him and he wants to spend the rest of his life with us?" she asked innocently.
Sophia smiled at Kourtney's question, trying to find the right words, not knowing exactly how to explain what was going on. "It's just grown - up talk, sweetheart," she replied gently. "Richard is just a very good friend who cares about us a lot."
Not satisfied, Kourtney pressed on with a question she had been asking for a while. "Is Richard my daddy?" she asked, her eyes wide with curiosity.
Sophia considered her response carefully. "Well, sweetie," she began, her voice filled with a moment of hopefulness, "Richard is..." She paused, looking directly into Kourtney's eyes, and then decided to give in to her innermost desire. "Yes, Kourtney, Richard is your daddy," she said softly, bracing herself for Kourtney's reaction.
Kourtney then turned to Richard, her eyes wide with wonder, she asked, "Are you really my dad?" Richard's calm smile never wavered as he replied, "Kiddo, I would be more than honored to be your daddy."
John, sensing the tension mounting around the dining table, coughed lightly to ease the atmosphere. He then turned to Richard, asking if he could have a minute alone with him. Richard, though unsure of the reason for John's request, nodded and replied, "Why not?"
John turned to Sophia, reassuring her, "I'm just borrowing Richard for a minute. We'll be back in a moment." Sophia, with a nod, replied, "It's okay. Take all the time you need."
With that, Richard and John excused themselves from the table, making their way to the study room. As John closed the study door behind them, he turned to Richard, his expression a mix of concern and bewilderment.
"What was that all about, Richard?" John's tone was firm, seeking an explanation for the unexpected turn of events. "Why would you claim to be the father of someone you're not?"
Richard, taken aback by John's directness, felt the weight of his words. "John, I... I've come to see Kourtney as my own," he admitted, his voice tinged with affection.
John's expression remained serious, his eyes searching Richard's face for sincerity. "Richard, being a father is more than just a title. It's a lifetime commitment," John cautioned. "It's not something you can walk away from when it gets tough. You'll be responsible for Sophia and her daughter, providing for them, protecting them."
Richard nodded firmly, his eyes reflecting determination. "I know it's a huge responsibility, John, but I'm ready for it," he said earnestly. "There's something about Sophia that feels like destiny. I can't explain it, but I trust this feeling. I know this is where I'm meant to be."
John sighed, knowing he couldn't dissuade Richard from his decision. "Think about it carefully, Richard. This isn't a decision to be taken lightly," John advised. "You'll be stepping into a role that requires strength and dedication."
Richard nodded again, his resolve unwavering. "I understand, John. And if it means being there for Sophia and Kourtney, I'll do whatever it takes," he affirmed, his heart full of determination.
