Chapter 61: Crossroads of Destiny

John placed his hands on Richard's shoulders, his gaze unwavering as he looked into Richard's eyes. "I hear you," he said solemnly, his voice carrying the weight of their conversation.

Richard smiled, relieved that John seemed to understand his perspective. John's hand on his shoulder was a reassuring gesture, and Richard felt a wave of gratitude towards his friend.

"Thanks, John," Richard said sincerely. "I appreciate your understanding."

John nodded, his eyes reflecting understanding, "I just hope you know what you're doing," he replied, his tone softening. "And make sure you're doing this for the right reasons."

With that, John changed the subject. "Oh, before I forget, the artifact you came for is ready," John said, a hint of excitement in his voice. "I actually received a call about its readiness earlier, before you arrived."

Richard's eyes lit up with excitement. "That's fantastic news! Can we depart immediately?" he asked eagerly.

John nodded, smiling at Richard's enthusiasm. "Yes, we can leave whenever you're ready," he replied, matching Richard's excitement.

As they rejoined Sophia, Kourtney, and Mrs. Adebayo at the dining area, Richard turned to Sophia, a gleam of excitement in his eyes.

"Sophia, I'm off to check out the artifact," Richard informed her, his voice filled with anticipation.

Sophia looked up, curiosity evident in her expression. "Can I come along?" she asked, her eyes sparkling with interest.

Richard smiled, touched by her eagerness. "Why not?" he replied, extending his hand to her. "Let's go together."

Mrs. Adebayo then chimed in, her tone filled with concern. "It's already past 4," she pointed out, gesturing toward the wall clock hanging in the dining area. "Even if you leave now, it will be late in the evening before you make your way down to Ilaro, especially with the traffic. Nigeria's neighborhoods can be dangerous after dark."

Richard and John understood the risks but felt compelled to continue their journey. "We appreciate your concern, Mrs. Adebayo," Richard replied, his voice determined. "We'll be cautious and take necessary precautions."

Mrs. Adebayo looked at them with a mix of worry and understanding. "I know the artifact is important, but your safety is paramount," she insisted, her voice reflecting her maternal concern. "Please, reconsider. It's not worth risking your lives for."

John stepped forward, echoing Richard's sentiment. "We understand the risks, but don't worry, we can take care of ourselves. Don't forget we're ex - Marines, and we know what we're doing," he said firmly. "But because of you, we'll make sure to be extra vigilant this time around, I promise."

Mrs. Adebayo then pressed further, expressing her concern. "I know you are both capable men, but please, do not drag Sophia into your risky games. She shouldn't be involved in something like this," she urged, her tone firm.

Richard nodded, acknowledging Mrs. Adebayo's concern. He then turned to Sophia, his eyes filled with regret. "I'm sorry, but I can't guarantee your safety if you come with us," he admitted, his voice heavy with regret. "I've already promised Abigail that I'll return you and Kourtney back to her safely."

Sophia's heart sank at Richard's words. She knew he was right, but the thought of being left behind filled her with anxiety. "I understand," she replied, her voice barely audible. "Just promise me you'll be careful."

Richard nodded, his expression solemn. "We will," he promised, his voice filled with determination. "We'll be back before you know it, safe and sound."

As Richard and John left the house, Mrs. Adebayo and Sophia took the opportunity to get to know each other better. Sophia, ever polite, inquired about Mrs. Adebayo's name.

"My name is Aliyah," Mrs. Adebayo replied with a warm smile.

Sophia, intrigued, ventured further. "Does that mean you're Muslim?" she asked.

"Yes, it does," Aliyah confirmed with a nod.

Sophia, noting the religious difference between Aliyah and her husband, John, pondered aloud, "And Mr. John is Christian?"

Aliyah chuckled softly. "Yes, he is."

Curiosity piqued, Sophia delved deeper, asking how they managed to make their marriage work with such distinct religious backgrounds.

Aliyah's smile widened. "When you love someone, regardless of your differences and backgrounds, you find a way to make it work," she explained. "Love supersedes everything."

She then added playfully, "Besides, it's easier to make it work when the person you love treats you right and has money," emphasizing the last point with a playful wink.

Sophia laughed, appreciating Aliyah's sense of humor. "Money does make things a bit easier, doesn't it?"

Aliyah nodded, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "It certainly helps," she agreed.

She then leaned in closer Sophia, her eyes filled with curiosity. "So, how did you and Richard meet?" she asked, her tone eager for the story.

Sophia smiled, reminiscing about the moment that had brought her and Richard together. "It all started in a restaurant back in the US," she began, setting the scene for Aliyah. "I was trying to settle a dispute between a customer and one of the restaurant workers when things took a dangerous turn."

Aliyah's eyes widened with interest. "What happened?" she asked, leaning in more closer to catch every detail.

Sophia continued, her voice steady as she recounted the events. "The customer became aggressive, and before I knew it, he was threatening me with physical violence. It was a tense moment, and I knew I was in trouble."

Aliyah listened intently, hanging on to every word. "And then Richard stepped in?" she guessed, sensing where the story was heading.

Sophia nodded, a grateful smile spreading across her face. "Yes, he did. Richard appeared out of nowhere and intervened before things escalated any further. He managed to disarm the man and diffuse the situation with such ease and quick thinking."

Aliyah's eyes sparkled with admiration. "He sounds like quite the hero," she remarked, impressed by Richard's actions.

Sophia nodded, her admiration for Richard evident. "He is. I don't know what would have happened if he hadn't been there. Richard truly saved me that day, and I'll always be grateful to him for that."

As they remained in the cozy dining area, the warm glow of the setting sun filled the room. Sophia couldn't help but feel a deep sense of connection with this woman she had just met. Curiosity tugged at her, and she turned to Aliyah, her eyes filled with genuine interest.

"I hope you don't mind me asking, but how did you and John meet?" Sophia inquired, eager to learn more about the couple's story.
