Chapter 63: A Morning of Promises
Chapter 63: A Morning of Promises
The sun had just begun to rise, its gentle rays slipping through the hospital curtains, casting delicate streaks of light across the cold tile floor. The room remained hushed, broken only by the steady beeping of Ethan’s heart monitor. Camila had been awake for some time, sitting upright in her wheelchair, her eyes half-open as she took in the room, feeling an unfamiliar warmth seep into the quiet space.
Looking at Ethan, his small face still lost in sleep, a tender flutter stirred in Camila’s chest. All those years, she had endured countless wounds, sleepless nights, endless worries, and moments of doubt about whether happiness would ever find her. Yet now, seeing the little boy peacefully resting, her heart overflowed with warmth and hope, as if all those years of hardship had finally been repaid.
Leon smiled, gently moving the wheelchair forward, each step careful, as if afraid to disturb the fragile moment. They approached Ethan’s bed. Soft locks of his hair fell across his pale forehead, lips curved in a dreamy smile, like a tiny angel lost in slumber.
Leon leaned closer to the bed, but Camila raised a finger to her lips, signaling silence. He understood immediately, nodding with a tender gaze.
The door creaked open softly, like a note dancing in the quiet. Ethan’s nanny stepped in, her steps gentle, as if even a single sound could wake the little master. Leon moved closer, his voice low and warm:
“It’s good you’re here. Please take care of Ethan for me; I’d like to take Camila for a short stroll.”
Camila squinted at him, worry etched on her face. But the nanny smiled kindly, her voice steady and soothing:
“Go ahead and take Miss Camila out. The morning air is fresh, and I’ll stay with Ethan.”
Leon nodded, pushing Camila’s wheelchair out of the room. Outside, the morning sunlight stretched across the trees, mingling with the sound of cars, hurried footsteps, and the cheerful chirping of birds. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves, carrying the subtle scent of the morning. Leon steered the wheelchair, speaking as he moved:
“Camila, how does it feel outside? Is it easier to breathe than inside?”
Camila took a deep breath, her eyes still fixed on the wide-open sky, a rare sense of peace rising within her:
“It’s definitely more comfortable… but I’m still a little worried about Ethan.”
Leon placed his hand over hers, his voice calm and steady:
“Don’t worry. The nanny has cared for me since I was a child. You can trust that everything is in good hands.”
Camila smiled, her gaze wandering to the faint pink clouds in the distance, where morning light danced among the treetops. A gentle, steadfast hope began to kindle in her heart. She spoke softly, almost as if letting a dream slip into the air:
“Leon… have you ever thought about our wedding?”
Leon furrowed his brows, slightly surprised:
“What did you say? I didn’t hear that clearly.”
Camila only laughed, shaking her head:
“I was just saying something foolish… never mind.”
The wheelchair stopped beside a stone bench. Camila leaned forward slightly:
“Why are we stopping here?”
Leon smiled, his voice soft and a little strained:
“My legs are a bit tired. Sit here for a moment, I’ll go get some water and be right back.”
Before Camila could fully process his words, Leon walked away and disappeared. Moments later, he returned, holding a vibrant bouquet of roses—Camila’s favorite. He approached slowly, eyes serious yet shining with emotion. His heart pounded in his chest, breaths coming a little quicker, yet his hands remained steady as he knelt before her, each movement overflowing with love and anticipation.
Camila accepted the bouquet, smiling, though her eyes still held a hint of hesitation:
“You said you were going to get water… why flowers? What are you up to?”
Leon knelt fully, eyes glistening, and slowly opened a red box to reveal a sparkling engagement ring. His voice trembled with a mixture of joy and emotion:
“Camila… all these years I’ve hurt you, but I have never forgotten my promise. Today, I won’t make you wait any longer. I promise that, no matter what happens, I will protect you and our child. Will you marry me?”
Camila remained silent, but warm tears streamed down her cheeks. Leon held her, soothing her gently:
“Why are you crying… didn’t you just say you wanted a wedding?”
She only cried, holding him like a child, as if all the pain, loss, and scars of the past had been healed in this moment.
Suddenly, a clear, joyful voice rang out across the courtyard:
“Mom! Say yes, Mom! Be my dad’s wife!”
Ethan, pushed in his wheelchair by the nanny, beamed as he approached them. Leon looked at Ethan, smiling brightly and gently patting his shoulder, sharing the joy and affirming the bond of their family. Camila looked at Leon, eyes sparkling, voice soft but steady:
“I say yes. From now on, I will be your wife and the mother of our child.”
She extended her hand, and Leon slid the ring onto her finger. Their smiles lit up their faces. They shared a kiss—slow, tender, mingling happiness, gratitude, and profound love. The world seemed to pause, leaving only breath, heartbeat, birdsong, and the faint scent of roses.
The nanny gently moved Ethan closer to them. Leon stood, wiped Camila’s tears, and bent down to kiss his son’s forehead. Ethan cheered, full of excitement:
“Yeah! Finally, my single dad has a wife!”
Laughter echoed across the courtyard, blending with the morning sunlight, the soft breeze, and birds soaring through the sky. Together, they walked along the small path through the hospital garden, hand in hand, Ethan skipping ahead and occasionally reaching back for his mother, or brushing the roses in his father’s hand.
Sunlight glimmered through the leaves, the air filled with the scent of roses, birdsong, and joyous laughter. In this perfect, fleeting harmony, every wound, loss, and pain had been healed, replaced by pure love, hope, and the promise of a new beginning.
