Chapter 62: Beneath the Gentle Promise
Chapter 62: Beneath the Gentle Promise
Morning sunlight slipped through the narrow gap in the curtain, falling into thin streaks upon the cold tile floor.
Inside the sterile white hospital room, the rhythmic beeping of the monitor blended with the faint, steady breaths of three souls.
Ethan let out a drowsy babble, stirring in his crib. Camila shifted, her lashes trembling as her eyes slowly opened. Weariness still pressed heavily upon her, yet the first thing she saw was Leon’s face—sitting steadfastly by her side, his posture rigid as though he had not moved all night.
“Did you… not sleep?” Camila’s voice was hoarse, fragile.
Leon tilted his head slightly, a faint curl at his lips.
“If I sleep, who will watch over you?”
Camila pressed her lips together, her gaze tender but quietly reproachful.
“There are nurses…”
“I don’t trust nurses.” His reply was firm, his dark eyes fathomless. “I only trust myself.”
Such a simple sentence—yet it made Camila’s chest ache with a sharp, unspoken sting.
A gentle knock broke the moment. A nurse entered, carrying a tray and setting it on the side table.
“Ms. Camila, today you should have some porridge to regain strength.”
Camila nodded with a faint smile of thanks. At once, Leon reached out to support her, helping her sit up. His movements were unhurried, precise—like a man who had practiced this countless times before.
“Slowly, don’t push yourself.” His voice was deep yet tender, tinged with command.
Flustered, Camila lowered her eyes, trying to hide her blush.
“I… I can sit by myself.”
“You can, but you don’t need to.” Leon cut in, gaze locked on her. He opened the container, steam rising, and scooped a spoonful. “Open up.”
Camila scrunched her nose, grumbling softly.
“Leon, I’m not a child.”
“Maybe not. But today, I choose to see you as one.” His tone was calm, lips faintly curved. “If you behave, you might even earn a kiss.”
Her ears burned crimson.
“You’re… impossible.”
But the spoon was already at her lips, its warmth brushing her skin, leaving her no choice but to yield. The fragrance of rice filled her senses, yet the true heat was not on her tongue—it was in the intensity of Leon’s gaze, watching her with such unwavering focus that her heartbeat scattered.
Just then, Ethan stirred awake, spotting the scene. With a tiny squeal, he stretched out his arms, demanding to be held.
“Wait your turn, little man. Daddy’s taking care of Mommy.” Leon’s voice softened, his expression gentler. He lifted Ethan into his lap, then turned back to Camila, spoon in hand. “Alright—airplane ready to land.”
He made a playful “whooshing” sound, moving the spoon like a toy plane. Camila burst out laughing, shoulders shaking.
“You’re ridiculous.”
“Perhaps. But ever since he came into our lives, I don’t mind being ridiculous.” Leon’s rare smile lingered, warmth flickering in his eyes like a flame burning solely for this small family.
Camila looked at father and son, her heart melting. She wished time could stop right here.
After his meal, Ethan drifted back to sleep, lips puckered as if savoring a candy-sweet dream. Only two remained awake.
Camila reached for Leon’s hand, her weak, trembling fingers swallowed in his large palm. Her voice was a fragile whisper.
“Leon… is there something you want to tell me?”
He froze, shadows flickering in his gaze. A heartbeat later, he forced a calm smile.
“What is it you want to hear?”
Her eyes softened but held quiet resolve.
“Are you… hiding something from me?”
His grip tightened—so firm she could feel the tension seeping into her bones. A storm flashed across his eyes, then he bent, brushing a tender kiss against her forehead.
“There’s nothing. You just need to recover. Leave the rest… to me.”
Her lashes trembled as she searched his steady smile, one so unyielding it left her speechless.
“You swear?”
Leon nodded, voice steady as steel.
“I swear.”
Yet deep within his eyes, the vow felt like a sentence weighed in chains.
By noon, Camila slipped into slumber, her breathing even. Leon stepped into the corridor, phone in hand.
His voice lowered, heavy as lead.
“I told you—give me more time. Everything will be taken care of.”
The voice on the other end was sharp, impatient.
“Contracts, shares, deadlines… you can’t delay forever.”
Leon’s knuckles blanched as he clenched the phone, throat taut. His eyes darkened, endless as an abyss. Still, his reply was resolute:
“I know. Just a few more days… I’ll pay the price if I must.”
He ended the call, standing motionless as the cold draft swept through the corridor, sinking deep into his bones. At last, he drew a long breath, burying the weight back into the depths of his gaze, before returning to the room.
Soft golden light bathed Camila’s sleeping face. Ethan stirred faintly in his crib, tiny hands curling as if clutching a dream.
Leon moved gently, tucking the blanket closer around Camila, adjusting her pillow with a care so delicate it seemed he feared shattering her dream. Then, lowering himself beside Ethan, he wrapped his large hand around the boy’s fragile fingers.
His expression softened, lips curving into a smile that was both tender and unbearably sorrowful.
“Sleep well, little one. Daddy will handle everything… as long as Mommy and you are safe.”
And in a voice scarcely audible, his head bowed:
“I’m sorry… One day, when you’re grown, you’ll understand why I chose this path.”
Night fell.
Leon lay on the sofa, one arm over his brow, eyes open to the ceiling. The golden light cast shadows across his features, shaping an outline of unspoken burdens.
On the bed, Camila lay still, her breathing even. But she was awake. Her eyes opened in the darkness, watching Leon—so close, yet so impossibly far.
“Leon… I know you’re carrying something heavy. I know your smile isn’t whole. I want to believe in you, to believe that everything will be alright. But my heart… refuses to be at peace.”
A single tear slid across her temple, warm, aching.
She shut her eyes tight, whispering into the silence:
“But as long as you stay with me and our son… I need nothing else.”
Beyond the window, the night wind stirred. In the distance, the city glimmered faintly—like waves hiding a storm swelling silently in the dark.
