Chapter Forty

The Threat

Two Hours Earlier…

Harry was determined to help Edgar win this battle against Elena. He’d used up all his energy and courage, not to mention magic, in breaking free from the hold she had on him. He'd had a good idea of how he was going to stop her and had even carried the one thing that rendered Elena powerless– St John’s Wort. For some reason she wasn’t allergic to wolfsbane. St John’s Wort, however, was her weakness. He’d planned on using it on her if she tried attacking him. Everything had gone according to plan until Elena had pulled out her phone and showed him images of his twin siblings, whom nobody but Elena knew were alive, bound to a stake in some unknown woods.

“Let me go or they die!” She held her phone up so he could see her goons pouring gasoline over his teenage siblings, who were visibly terrified. “And don’t even think about using your pathetic magic on me!”

“Why did you have to drag my family into this?” he asked. He never assumed she’d stoop this low.

“You left me no other choice,” she said.

Harry shook his head. “You’re doing the wrong thing. You won’t get away with this.”

“Oh, but I will, little wolf.” She grinned. “I can do whatever I want. You and Edgar will always be cleaning up behind me.”

Harry shook his head. “Not this time.” He never moved his eyes off of her. She reached for her gun; Harry kept his gaze on the baby. Once he rescued the baby, he’d ask Edgar to help him save his siblings.

Harry grabbed the baby and ran while Elena fired gunshots at him. Luckily, Alia reached him in time to grab the baby and run to safety. Elena snarled at him, partially transforming. “You will regret this. I swear I will make you pay." She held the phone up for him to see. “Kill them!” she instructed her goons.

Harry panicked. She’d really intended on killing his siblings? He’d never seen this side of her. What had he done? Edgar would never make it in time to save his siblings. “Elena! Wait! I’ll get the baby back for you!”

“And how will you do that when you’ve already proven you’re a coward?” she asked him.

“Leave it to me. Please don’t kill my brothers. They’re the only family I have,” he pleaded.

Elena threw her head back and laughed at him. “Get me back my baby and promise you will make me your Luna."

Harry swallowed the lump in his throat. Making her his Luna meant she’d receive next to no punishment from the Elders because he would be bound to serve her punishment for not correcting her behavior. The elders often made werewolf mates serve sentences of their mates as punishment for not correcting their behavior.

“Yes, yes, I will do it.”

“Fine. I want the baby back in two hours,” she said. “And I expect you to inform Edgar of your intentions to mate with me.”

Harry’s heart shattered as he made his way towards Alia and Edgar. Both of them were trying their best to save everyone. It was just like Edgar and Alia to want to save everyone. The baby, too, was doing his part. Harry watched in amazement as the baby controlled the explosion and minimized its impact. Edgar’s heir was truly powerful and incredibly magical. He saw Alia weakening from the impact of the energy she was using to save everyone. Edgar was cleaning up Elena’s mess just as she had mocked, and this time it was Alia, not Harry, who was helping him. Rehoming the magical creatures Elena had abandoned was also a civil and amicable decision. If he wanted to grab the baby, he had a five second window of opportunity.

“Isn’t he amazing?” Edgar asked him.

“He is,” Harry agreed.

Edgar marvelled in delight when the baby smiled. “And he’s the most gorgeous little boy I’ve ever laid my eyes on.”

“Me too. May I hold him for a moment?” Harry asked.

“Sure,” Edgar said.

Just then Alia fainted. Blood trickled out of her nose. She’d drained herself to save everyone.

Harry bolted before Edgar asked him for help. The baby’s blanket fell. He didn’t have enough time to retrieve it. He ran and summoned a portal at the same time. The portal appeared in front of him within seconds and Harry jumped inside. Before the portal closed, he took one last look at Edgar. Heartache filled the Alpha’s face as he held his lifeless Luna in his arms and desperately searched for the baby.

The portal led him right to Elena.

Her face lit up when she saw the baby; she took him immediately and cradled him to her chest. “I’m glad you came to your senses and joined the wining team,” Elena told him.

Harry nodded. “I want proof that my brothers are safe.”

Elena held the baby in one hand and video called her goons with her free hand. “Let the boys go,” she said. She held up her phone for Harry to see.

The goons cut the boys free. They ran off like frightened little rabbits into the woods. They would find a new hiding place and be even more careful this time, Harry thought. After all, he’d taught them well.

“Let’s go, Harry. We have a family to take care of,” Elena said.

What have I done? Harry wondered as followed her to her brand new beach house in Hawaii.
