Chapter Thirty-Nine
Saving His Family
Edgar glanced at Alia before he grabbed the remote from Elena’s hands. He couldn’t bear the thought of life without Alia, just as he couldn’t even imagine a life with Elena. He had to risk everything for the sake of his family. Alia’s eyes glowed when their gazes met. Edgar gasped. Did this mean Alia was now part wolf? His heart lurched; this meant he could make her his Luna. Although he’d secretly considered making her Luna, he had been a little afraid that because she was human he might hurt her with his powerful lovemaking. Now that his baby had left a piece of itself inside her it seemed like Alia’s DNA had somehow adapted and she was truly and biologically a werewolf-human hybrid.
He snapped out of his realization and focused his attention on Elena. She was staring at Alia.
No! Edgar thought. Her twisted mind had to be working at breakneck speed. He glimpsed her pure hatred for Alia in Elena’s eyes. He didn’t mind if Elena hated Alia. He couldn’t control how she felt about others. All Edgar wanted to do was prevent her from harming anyone in her twisted quest for power.
While Elena remained transfixed on Alia holding his heir, Edgar lunged towards her and reached for the remote. Elena pulled her hand away and pressed the button.
“You’re not that smart, Edgar.” She flashed him an evil smile. “Did you think I would make this so easy for you?” She tapped her watch. “You have less than three minutes before this place blows up.” She pushed her hands into the pockets of her boiler suit, whistled a familiar tune and casually strolled to her van.
Edgar glanced fearfully at the gates. “I have to get them all out of there,” he said.
Alia shook her head. “You will never make it.”
“I can’t just leave the entire supernatural community inside to die.”
Alia handed their baby to him. “Who said we’re going to witness a mass murder?
Edgar looked at her, confused. “What do you have in mind?”
She held up her hands. “I am going to create a bubble like our baby used to make to protect everyone inside. Hopefully our little one will sense what I’m doing and help me.”
Edgar watched as she closed her eyes. Light emanated from her fingers and quickly spread all around them.
Edgar checked the timer on the device Elena had flung on the ground. If he knew where the bomb was he could have tried to disconnect it, but he didn’t know much about bombs because wolves usually fought to death in any battles.
The baby wriggled in his arms. Edgar realized he wanted to be held up. He was not even a day old, Edgar thought. It seemed like his baby was far more extraordinary than he could have ever imagined. Once he held the baby up, he too closed his eyes like his mother had and created a force field next to hers. Edgar was confused. He’d assumed the baby would add more energy to Alia’s protective powers. As he watched the two force fields cover the inside of the Evening Club, he realized what the baby had done.
The bomb exploded inside the baby’s bubble. The bubble decreased in size, magically shrinking the impact of the explosion. Alia’s bubble sucked the supernatural army inside protecting them.
“Wow!” Edgar whispered, watching the mother and son as they saved every member of their army and the army Elena had abandoned. The baby’s bubble vanished once the explosion was reduced to a harmless pile of ash. Elena’s bubble too slowly waned as beings rushed out of the club. Edgar smiled as he noticed Harry leading the members of Elena’s army to safety.
Had he truly turned around? Edgar wondered. While he cared deeply about his Beta, Harry was still a little too emotional to make a strong Alpha. He doubted Harry would ever lead a pack. Perhaps he could do it only with the assistance of a strong Luna. He would have to worry about Harry later; now he needed to clean up Elena’s mess.
“Friends and family, I humbly request your assistance in rehoming the magical beings Elena abandoned. If any one of them chooses a life of crime after you take them under your wing, please report them to the Elders immediately. Human members of Elena’s army, please leave your weapons behind and return to your families.”
There were murmurs of approval from the crowd. As the beings dispersed, Edgar noticed that Harry was still staring at his heir.
“Isn’t he amazing?” Edgar asked him.
“He is,” Harry agreed.
Edgar marveled in delight when the baby smiled. “And he’s the most gorgeous little boy I’ve ever laid my eyes on.”
“Me too. May I hold him for a moment?” Harry asked.
“Sure,” Edgar said.
He told himself he would keep his eye on Harry while he held the child. Just then Alia fainted, blood trickling out of her nose. She’d drained herself to save everyone. Edgar turned around to ask Harry for help.
But there was no sign of Harry or his baby.
