CHAPTER 109; THE DUTY OF A BETA
CHAPTER 109; THE DUTY OF A BETA
CIERRA
The drive to the Robertson’s pack house is slow and heart-cutting. I can’t help but be anxious as we get closer to the mansion. It’s already nerve-wracking just by the thought of everything about to happen.
“Are you guys sure this is the right way to go about it?” Nadine questions from behind. It’s odd how the bold Nadine and the Nadine that I expected to push me to save the one I love is trying to run away. I always saw her as a fearless woman, she even shielded me before Damien fearlessly but now…
I understand this is a bigger situation, but some sort of encouragement would help. Why is she trying to get me to run away, if she doesn’t want to be involved I’m not going to force her to. I don’t wish for anyone to suffer with me.
I take a breath before speaking, trying my very best to be calm with my words, as I remind myself she’s my aunt more she’s my mother’s sister and with the things that she has done for me, she deserves to be respected by me.
“It’s okay if you want to return, I won’t hold you back, you and Cassius can return and I will try to find a way out myself”
“That is not possible, I am not leaving you, I lost your mother, how do you think I will leave knowing I abandoned you like I did with your mother,”
The car comes to a halt before the mansion compound and the gate slowly opens for us to get in, in a few minutes there will be no going back for us. From Nadine’s statement, it’s clear we both think the same, neither of us wants to lose each other but if I have to lose myself while trying to get my lover safe I can die with a smile.
I turn to her, only to meet tears gathering her eyes. I’ve never seen her this way, I’ve never seen her this emotional.
“I’m sure Mother doesn’t think you abandoned her and I won’t think that way,” But I would be hurt if she died in this place, she just began to find happiness, I cannot let her cut it off because of me.
Before Nadine can respond, Cassius cuts in.
“Nadine can stay here, I’ll go in with you” Cassius states, and I don’t fail to notice her pupils dilating before she throws it away, not bothering to disagree.
“Ma’am I think it’s time we get down,” Cassius says nodding at the female standing inside the compound, just at the entrance to the mansion, she smiles as if she’s aware that we’ve noticed her.
I nod at Cassius before we both step down from the car. Without giving Nadine one last glance I step away from the car, it will only break her heart more if I speak more with her.
However, the minute I’m down with Cassius I halt, causing him to halt too.
“Ma’am, is there a problem?” He questions.
It’s not a problem, though I am not certain but Nadine is odd, and that belly rub can’t get itself out of my head. I’ve been pregnant before, and It’s hard to fail to notice one.
“Nadine is pregnant…right?” I slowly turn to Cassius by my side and watch as his gaze falls to the ground. His silence is all I need for confirmation. I’m not in his shoes but if I am to guess, right now he’s conflicted. Having to choose a master he’s been serving since he was little and then his new lover that is carrying a child. More like his child. He won’t tear his gaze for me if it isn’t his.
I can’t help but smile, even if my story ends up having a sad ending, I would love for the ones I care about to be happy.
“Having a child is a whole lot, there ups and downs but if you are to ask any parent, they would tell you there’s a lot of ups, which is why we have to keep them from harm, which is why we have to protect them” I pause, a lump growing in my throat as I remember Ryan.
“A child is the goddess's gift, it is a privilege for anyone to be a parent and I want my aunt to enjoy that with her lover by her side”
I guess there’s a lot of first time to witness today but never in my life did I expect a tear from Cassius as he stares up at me with watering eyes, his usual demeanor lost as he seems soft and apologetic.
“Xander won’t want the same, he already lost his mother, if he loses you or your unborn child he will forever live to blame himself. I know you are worried about him, but I will bring him back, I just need you to take my aunt back and promise to keep them both safe”
“It’s my duty-“
“To keep your child safe, that is what comes first. Losing a child is heartbreaking and impossible to move on from. I promise to bring Xander out safe and now I need you to promise me and keep them safe”
Tears trickle down his cheek as he nods softly and I can’t help exhale in relief.
“Then you should take your leave now,” I say, patting his back, and staring back at the tinted glass of the car. I can’t see her but I can tell she has broken down in there I let out a smile and a soft nod before walking into the compound gate.
