Chapter thirty-five

“Oh my god,” I said and broke down in a flood of shaky tears.

“You were so brave, baby,” Lucian said, and we were on the grass. He held me tight and I sobbed into his shirt.

“Let’s go. It isn’t over yet. These wolves have something against the pack if they went against the dragon king’s wishes,” he said softly and picked me up bridal style.

“Where are we going?” I asked softly as he began running quickly through the trees.

“I’ve contacted Nate, he’s telling Alpha Kurt and they are to not raise any alarm. They have a tunnel a few miles from here that will lead us right into the pack house.”

I nodded.

“It will probably take us into the basement,” I said and squealed when he leaped over a fallen tree.

“There!” I pointed to a moss-covered rock with a wooden piece that looked like a door handle and Lucian slowed down.

He put me on the ground, and I felt the cool grass under my feet again.

I walked towards the stone and knocked until I heard the hollow sound of wood.

I shook the door handle until the door slowly pushed open and the sound of shaking leaves had Lucian running in the darkness, dragging me behind him.

“Who are we dealing with here?” Alpha Kurt asked as we stood around a table covered by a map of the pack lands.

“We don’t know. All we know is that they are powerful enough to be hired by the dragon king,” Lucian said stepping forward, placing a hand on my shoulder.

“We need to join our warriors into one. The more guns we have, the better our chance of survival. We need both packs in the big hall in the next thirty minutes before we engage,” the Alpha said, and I stepped forward.

“I will stand by my mate’s side,” I said, linking mine and Lucian’s hands. Lucian didn’t say anything because he knew, it wasn’t up for discussion.

Alpha Kurt nodded in approval.

“Everyone has their duties. Lucian, you have the positions for your warriors. We’ll meet at the south side in thirty minutes to speak with the leader of whoever is running this operation.”

Everyone made their way out of the room and I turned to Lucian. He smiled softly and pressed his hand on my cheek. I leaned my face into the palm of his hand.

“I am so sorry, Tessa,” he whispered. I frowned.

“I knew he’d come back for me, he’s ruined the natural growth of our pups, and look what he’s done to you. He’s scarred you.”

“Lucian. Stop. This is non of your fault. He chose to hurt me. He didn’t have to, but he did. You could have rejected me when we first met but you didn’t. Because you felt it. In here,” I said, placing my hand on his beating heart.

“I love you,” I whispered and stood on my toes to kiss him. He deepened the kiss and lifted me.

“Lucian,” I said breathlessly, as his hand slid under the cotton top.

“I want to take you. One last time before we go into battle,” he said in a hoarse voice.

I tilted my head back and he placed me on the table, leaning me onto the wood.

He slipped the trousers off and took my mouth in his again.

He linked our hands as he made love to me, for what felt like the last time.

“Is everyone in place?” Alpha Kurt asked as we joined him, the best of his warriors and ours.

“Yes. Everyone is in the hall and some of our wolves are there just in case,” I said and stood beside him, facing the dark forest.

It was quiet for a few minutes before the smell of old dog blew in the air.

Wolf eyes shone in the dark as the sun began to set and I crouched down, ready to pounce.

“Please. We don’t want a fight,” a young man said, his blonde hair was slightly messy, and his emerald green eyes glowed with danger.

“How can we believe you if you’ve got us surrounded?” Alpha Kurt said loudly.

“Just in case, we don’t get what we want,” he said with a smirk before looking at me.

“And what is it you want from us?” Lucian said with a growl.

“We want Tessa,” a woman’s voice said, and my back straightened as the figure walked out from the tree line.

“Oh my god.” Alpha Kurt said and he looked at me. A deep, menacing growl came from Lucian at my other side.

“Nice to see you too, Melissa,” I said with my teeth clenched tightly.
