CHAPTER 37. HER IN MY FUTURE

LOGAN

”As y'all know, this is your last year of being a student here. There's been a new rule by the school administration. All undeclared majors are to be segregated and kept in here until they make the ultimate decision on what they want in life. No more gen-ed classes for the lots of you. If you look around, you'll notice a few of you already chose a major. That's the only way you can leave this crampy hall, choose a major. Or rot in here for the rest of the year. You don't get to leave this hall when you arrive, you only leave when the day is over, then you return the next day and spend it here till the year ends,” She finalized, making her loath for us real evident in her tone.

Endless murmurings disrupted the quietness in the hall. Charles glanced my way and so did Jake and Drake. I returned their glances with my unfaltering stare. Of course, we're gonna be rotting in here till the year ends. We can't choose a fucking major.

The thing is, schooling is a little bit more complicated for werewolves than it was for humans. Especially for the Alpha-heirs and Beta-heirs. More than half of the werewolves here in this hall were Alpha-heirs and Beta-heirs. Half of them were at the sprints last night.

Going to school for us doesn't mean we wanna make a career out of it. Just like Father had said when he was sending me off to high school years back, he just wanted me to learn the ways of humans. Get sophisticated. Explore the world. Get insights on how to be a better Alpha when I assume the position. The human world was advancing, and we had to bring that development to our world.

So here in college, stuff like choosing a major and sticking to it was a luxury we couldn't afford. We don't need the fucking degree. We're just sticking around until we're asked to return home.

In our first year here in college, there were like a thousand Alpha-heirs and Beta-heirs.

But in the second year, half of them left, they were needed in their packs to fully assume their positions and rule their packs. And in the third year, more than half of them left too. And this year, Dimitri and a few others were gone too. There were just a number of us left.

We weren't needed at home yet, so that's why we're still here, not because we were being very serious about the whole studying and shit. But we did have pretty good grades, but it's worthless without a major.

But then, I was reluctant to return home. I'll stick around here for two more years if I could. I don't wanna face Father, and I don't wanna be an Alpha without a mate. I'll die from the loneliness. Being here was a distraction to my misery, and that's why I don't mind the crappy hall, as long as I get to be here.

“And it's not just this crappy hall, if you keep up being undecided for long, you'll be forced to drop out. The school will let you off,” She announced.

“That's bullshit!” Drake echoed, and another murmuring erupted.

“No, it isn't bullshit,” The teacher retorted sternly, “It's our way of letting you know we won't tolerate your lousiness any longer. Most of y'all have good grades, you seem focused. Why the hell do you not wanna have a major?“

Alejandro raised his hands and she gestured at him to speak. He was casually leaning on my seat and was twirling a pen in his hand.

“What if we just wanna unwind here until we get Re something better to do with our lives?“ he asked, ”Wouldn't you be a sweetheart and indulge us till then?“

He was being an ass, and the cheer he got from the guys inflated his ego. They were giving the poor woman a hard time, and truth be told, she doesn't deserve it. But I still chuckled tho, he nailed it.

“Shots fired!“ Charles whispered with a chuckle.

“Yup,“ I whispered back in amusement, with my fingers intertwined on the desk in anticipation. It was only a matter of seconds before it becomes a verbal battlefield. With the way the teacher was fuming, she won't let him off the hook easily.

“I'm sorry to bust your stupid bubbles, Mr. Alejandro, but this isn't some nightclub where you unwind and get wasted till you choose to leave. This is a school, and there's a limit to which we can tolerate miscreants like you. So no, we can't indulge your stupidity any more than we already have. Choose a major or be a dropout. I'm sure the latter sounds more pleasant to you, ” She ended through clenched teeth, with a very facial smile.

Another cheering followed, and Alejandro backed off. He just got a solid burn, it'll be stupid for him to continue.

She placed a huge pile of notebooks on the front desk with a loud slam.

“Distribute these amongst yourselves. Each notebook contains 50 pages. In them, you're gonna write what you picture your life to be like in the next two, there, tens years. Then maybe, we could help choose a major that falls under your imagination. This is as much help as I can give–“

She cut off her own words with a deep retch like she so badly wanted to throw up.

“What's that god-awful stench?! Stinks of wet dogs!” She gasped, clamping her nose with her hand. She was having it really bad, that she was fighting to keep herself from throwing up.

Snickering came from all sides, including Charles who was seated next to me. I was more shocked by how immature these guys can get.

Alejandro and Drake, those fuckers!

I glanced at them and they winked at me, subtly unbuttoning their shirts. They were seated at different seats, so it's obvious they were doing this mischief through a mind-link.

Here's the thing, Humans give off a slightly, funky smell to werewolves. Like when they're around us, we got to scrunch our noses a few times because of the funkiness. But we're kinda used to it now.

But to humans, we give off a really bad, wet dog-like stench. I don't know how bad it is because I can't perceive it, but the humans who have perceived it claimed it was the fastest way to end their lives.

Now, we gotta hide this stench behind elixirs and scenting perfumes just not to inconvenience any human when we blend in their world. But then, we can still choose to unleash the stench and discomfort them, and we get to direct the stench to a specific victim of our choice.

Right now, Drake and Alejandro were unleashing their stench on her. And that's like the craziest prank to pull on a human.

”Oh, God. You guys stink so bad!” She yelled, running out of the hall.

“Bitch!“ Alejandro cussed out loud, forcing out his Spanish accent.

The guffaw that followed her exit was deafening. I chuckled, standing to go grab the notebooks. I gave my Betas each and tossed one to Alejandro.

”I don't need this,“ Drake started as we left the hall, prancing the hallways. He was looking at the notebook like it was an alien.

We left the hall immediately after she left. She didn't exactly expect us to spend the whole day there, did she?

”Yeah, me too,“ Alejandro chirped in, tossing his notebook into a trash can, ”I'll be returning to my pack in a month. Father says it's time,”

We were quiet and just absorbed in the silence. He was obviously not ready, and the fact that he has no choice made the mood real melancholia.

And that's why Dimitri left without a word to us. You could bet he's wallowing in thoughts right now where he is.

Show me a happy Alpha-heir and I'll end my life with my own hands. We're never happy, not really. Especially when it had to do with taking over the Alpha position. The responsibilities that came with it rid us of our happiness before we eventually before Alphas.

“Cheer up, man,“ Drake nudged him, “You still got a month,“

”Yeah, let's make the most out of it,“ Alejandro said elatedly, ”How about we hit the nightclub tonight?“

”Sure, I'm in,” Drake said, of course, he'll be in. What else do you expect from a Casanova?

“Charles?”

“I can spare a few minutes,“ Charles shrugged, feeling the least enthusiastic.

“Perfecto!” Alejandro squealed, and his gaze was on Jake and I.

“I can't, ” Jake said flatly, and that was it. No explanations. No smiles. No jokes.

We were used to his distant, indifferent attitude but Alejandro wasn't. He shared confused glances with us like he was wondering if he said or did something wrong to deserve Jake's cold attitude.

”Jake and I got some hanging out to do. So I'm afraid we won't be coming,” I went in to rescue the moment, giving Jake a pointed look. About time he got rid of this attitude of his. We miss the old, goody Jake.

“Well, let us know if you change your mind,” Alejandro shrugged.

The day went by in a rush and soon, we were back at the apartment. I spent the whole afternoon locked in my room.

I was brooding over the notebook, trying to picture my life in the next three or ten years. Nothing else came to mind. I didn't want it any other way. But with her by her side.

I can't picture my future without seeing her in it, and that put me in a whole crappy mood.

Enough of the brooding, I got dressed and left my room. It was a few minutes to midnight. Drake and Charles were already at the nightclub. Right now, I badly need the buzz so I'm going to join them.

I checked on Jake and his room was locked from the inside. I knocked on his door.

”Hey, dude. I'm gonna go join the guys at the nightclub. You need anything?“

”No!” He replied, and that was it.

I hurried down the stairs and left the room, I pressed the elevator button but had a beep in my phone so I took it out. Distracted, I hadn't realized the elevator door had opened until I bumped into whoever it was.
