A Spy At The Mansion!
"So what time are we supposed to go over there?" Cornelia asked. They had arrived in the evening after receiving a call from Scarlett about the mission.
Scarlett cast a glance over at Mia. "What do you think?" She has started to listen to Latifah's advice about Mia. That morning, after breakfast, Scarlett excused herself to Mia's room to talk about last night. She was curious as to why Mia would plan all of this. She knew it wasn't because Mia encouraged her relationship with Simon.
Mia had stated. "I just assumed bringing Simon over would irritate you. And, much to my surprise, it did not. What exactly happened there? Did you rekindle your love?"
Scarlett did not respond right away. She was thinking about what Simon had said to her the night before. She extended her hand to shake Mia's hand. "Can we call a truce now that you've exacted your revenge on me?"
Mia was taken aback. "Just like that? You're not going to get even with me?" Scarlett shook her head. "That is no fun, Scarlett."
"We should stick together rather than tear each other apart. We still have this mission to finish. How would we learn more about our family if we were separated?"
"You are right." Mia had said. "We shouldn't take this petty fight too far."
"And I shouldn't think about taking your head out of your neck." Scarlett said quietly. Definitely sure Mia heard those words.
"What?"
Scarlett laughed. "Nothing."
Presently. Mia cast a quick glance at Scarlett. "I believe it is best to leave at midnight."
"Midnight?" They were all puzzled.
"Yes. Think about it. What if Granddad has a late-night meeting? What if the organisation is still active? We don't want anyone to notice that we're present."
Scarlett gave a slow nod. "You are right. That reminds me. I've previously seen something in Mom's room. It was the date and time printed on paper. I thought it was supposed to be her meeting schedule, but now that we all know what my parents' real job is, I guess it is the time for their organisational meeting."
"Can you recall what was there?" Avery inquired.
"The meeting on Monday begins at 12 p.m. and ends at 4 p.m. Tuesday…" Scarlett tried to remember. "Yes! Meetings on Tuesdays are always held at night. It runs from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The same goes for Wednesday and the following days."
"That means we still have one or two hours until the meeting begins. Scarlett. I believe Mia and I should attend the meeting in secret. You and Cornelia should come at midnight."
"That's risky, Avery," Scarlett said.
"Avery, I'm with Scarlett. I am still glad my head is still intact. What do you think would have happened if I had been apprehended the day I followed my mother?" Mia asked.
"They wouldn't have killed you. They'd just tell you more about the hunters and force you to join them." Cornelia said.
Everyone glanced at her with a nod. "Perhaps that's what we should do." Scarlett explained. "Mia. If grandfather accepts you as a member, you can provide us with more information."
"It's not as simple as you make it sound. There's a reason Mom didn't tell us about what they do. Perhaps she doesn't want blood on our hands. Did you think about that?"
When it came to October, Scarlett never gave thought a chance. That's how much she despised her mother. Scarlett took a deep breath. "We'll leave at midnight. That, I believe, is the best way."
Midnight was only a few hours away. The girls began to fill an empty bag with snacks and water. Scarlett cast a glance out the window. It was only a half-moon. She has no reason to speak with Raven, but she would like Raven to get her revenge. Her grandfather had caused so much damage that she was almost killed. Scarlett turned around, watching the girls fixate on the clock. A smile curled on her face because they all had a look of, "I wish I had magic that could make the time faster."
"What are we going to do about Latifah?" Scarlett inquired as she approached them. At the very least, she will be able to keep them talking before time runs out. She sat on her bed and hugged herself.
"That is right. I almost forgot we had another person in the house." Mia said.
"Speaking of person, isn't Belly supposed to have returned by now?" Avery asked.
"She didn't even call. That means she won't be able to return home this weekend. Maybe mom told her not to because of Scarlett."
"Hey. What is wrong with me?"
Mia shook her head. "You have some kind of anger issue. If Belly is aware that your memories have returned, she will attempt to frustrate you, and you will not hesitate to kill her."
"I am not at all like that." Scarlett fixed her gaze on Avery and Cornelia. "Right?"
They both fell silent.
"You see? Even your best friends can't defend you."
"Enough already, Mia. Let's talk about how to keep Latifah from knowing when we're gone. Who knows, Mom might have made her a spy to get information quickly." Scarlett said. "I don't trust October. It is October."
"Or... perhaps it's time you gave her the opportunity to be a mother. This has been going on for a long time. Dad died five months ago, Scarlett. Please let it all go. Mom is the only parent we have left. We can't get rid of her because of what she did when we were kids."
"Oh. Watch me…"
*beep, beep, beep* The sound of the alarm interrupted. They all stood up and were getting ready to leave.
"Wait!" Scarlett stopped them in their tracks. When they turned around, she said, "I'll drive."
"Of course you're going to drive." Avery said. "You guys should be careful on your way out. Make no noise that would wake the sleeping maid." Avery said quietly as she exited Scarlett's room.
The girls gently descended the stairs and made their way out of the house, thinking they hadn't been noticed, but Latifah had been peeking through her door the entire time, watching them leave. She reached for her phone. "Miss Augusta, the girls have just left the house."
