Chapter 9 Nine

Chapter 9 Nine

CHAPTER NINE

Mira POV

The Council’s towers burned faintly in the distance, fires still smoldering from the chaos we had caused. I did not feel triumph. I felt calculation. Every step I had taken, every move I had made, had brought us to this point. But the fight was not over. Not even close.

Jason walked beside me, silent. I could feel the tension in his shoulders, the weight of guilt he carried. I did not pity him. I did not forgive him. Not yet. But I needed him alive, and that meant tolerating him, at least for now.

We reached the outer gates of the city under the cover of night. Shadows clung to me instinctively, sensing danger. The streets were quiet, unusually so. Too quiet. The mage had escaped, but I had no doubt he would regroup. The Core was still unstable, still reacting to my energy. The Queen had planned this far too well.

Jason’s voice broke the silence. “We need allies. We cannot take the Queen head-on yet.”

I nodded. “I know. But I do not need allies I cannot trust. The Council’s spies are everywhere. Even your soldiers—your family—could be compromised.”

He flinched slightly, though he did not respond. I could see the memory of betrayal written across his face. I did not offer comfort. That was not my purpose. My purpose was revenge.

We moved to a hidden courtyard I had discovered months ago. It would serve as our temporary base. Shadows shifted around us, protective and alert. I finally allowed myself a moment to catch my breath. My body ached from the previous battle, but the ache was familiar, a reminder that I was alive, that I had survived.

Jason watched me. There was something in his eyes I had not expected. Concern, perhaps. Fear, perhaps. Or maybe a desire to fix what could not be fixed.

“You are planning your next move,” he said. His voice was careful. “I can help.”

“I do not need help,” I said sharply. “I need someone who follows my plan exactly. Who understands the stakes. Who does not hesitate.”

His jaw tightened. “You think I will hesitate?”

“I know you will,” I said. “Because you care. Because you care too much. Because you always have.”

He did not answer. I turned away. I could not let him see the fire in my chest, the anger that had fueled me for years. He had taken everything from me once. I would not allow him near my heart again. Not yet.

The night deepened, and I finally allowed myself to focus on the Core. Its unstable energy pulsed faintly in my mind. I needed to understand it fully before the Queen moved again. My shadows wrapped around it as I studied its structure, analyzing its weaknesses, its strength, its potential.

Jason crouched beside me. “What are you thinking?”

“Contingency plans,” I said. “If the Queen comes for me directly, if the mage returns, if the Council mobilizes fully. We cannot afford mistakes.”

He nodded, reluctantly accepting my authority. “I will follow your lead,” he said.

I allowed myself a small glance at him. His willingness to submit, to defer, was temporary. I knew it. But for now, it served our purpose.

A shadow shifted at the edge of the courtyard. I stiffened, instincts on high alert. The mage. Or worse, a spy.

Jason moved beside me instantly, sword drawn. My shadows leapt from my hands, curling around the intruder.

The figure stepped forward. Not the mage. Not a soldier. A woman, tall, regal, with sharp eyes that gleamed in the darkness. The Queen.

“I was hoping I would find you alive,” she said. Her voice was calm, measured, deadly. “I see the Shadow Wolf survived my little trap.”

I did not move. I did not speak. Shadows tightened around my feet, my hands hovering above them, ready to strike.

Jason’s jaw tightened. “You sent them,” he said, voice low. “You used her. You used the mage. You planned everything.”

The Queen smiled faintly. “I did what was necessary to protect the kingdom. And to test you both.”

“Test us?” I said, disbelief thick in my voice. “You destroyed lives. You betrayed your own people. You nearly killed me.”

“You survived,” she said. “That was the point.”

I could feel every ounce of anger rising in my chest. Every betrayal, every humiliation, every hour of suffering inflicted because of her manipulation. I had trained, I had survived, I had fought. And she had watched it all as if it were a lesson.

Jason stepped closer to me. “She will not succeed,” he said, voice low and firm. “We will stop her. Together.”

I did not respond. Together. That word was dangerous. Tempting. I could feel its weight pressing against the barrier I had built around my heart.

The Queen’s eyes flicked between us. “You are stronger than I anticipated. Stronger than I allowed myself to fear. But you are still children in a world built on power and deceit. You do not understand the stakes.”

“I understand more than you think,” I said. “I understand betrayal. I understand loss. And I understand revenge.”

Jason’s hand brushed mine again. Not accidental, not gentle. A reminder of what had been. A promise of what could be. I kept my eyes on the Queen. I did not move. I did not flinch.

The Queen’s expression hardened. “Then you understand why I cannot allow you to live unchallenged. The mage was only the beginning. You will see the full extent of my plans soon.”

Shadows coiled around me, sharp and ready. I could feel Jason at my side, tension radiating from him. Our eyes met for a fraction of a second. No words were needed. He would fight. I would fight. And we would survive.

The Queen stepped back into the shadows, fading from view as if she had never been there. But I knew her presence lingered. Her threat was not gone. It would follow us. It would hunt us. And the next encounter would be worse.

Jason sheathed his sword finally. “She will come back,” he said. “And next time, we will be ready.”

I did not answer. My mind was already moving, planning, calculating. The mage, the Council, the Core, the Queen’s manipulations. Nothing was left to chance.

The night stretched on. The city below was quiet. But the danger was far from over. Shadows shifted around me, alive, restless. I could feel the pull of vengeance stronger than ever.

And I could feel Jason beside me, alive, steadfast, and dangerous. A reminder of everything I had lost and everything I had yet to reclaim.

I did not trust him. I did not forgive him. But I would not leave him behind. Not now. Not ever.

Because together, we were more than dangerous. We were unstoppable.

And the Queen would soon learn that surviving the Shadow Wolf was only the beginning.
