Chapter 8 Eight

Chapter 8 Eight

CHAPTER EIGHT

Jason POV

The chamber was quiet now. The Core pulsed faintly above us, its energy settling after the chaos. Dust and debris littered the floor, and the air smelled of smoke and magic. Mira stood beside me, shadows curling around her hands as if they were extensions of her body. I could see the tension in her shoulders, the way her jaw was set, the sharpness in her eyes.

I wanted to speak, to tell her that she did not have to carry the weight alone. I wanted to reach for her, to let her know I had not come this far to fail again. But the words caught in my throat. I had spent three years failing her. Words were no longer enough.

“We need to move,” I said instead. My voice was calm, but inside, the guilt gnawed at me. “The Council will send more soldiers. They will not forgive what we have done here.”

Mira did not move immediately. She glanced at the Core, then back at me. Her expression was unreadable. “We cannot leave yet. I need answers. I need to know what they planned. What they wanted from me.”

I nodded. I understood. I had been asking the same questions for years. The Council had used her, tortured her, manipulated her. They had used me as well. I had been a pawn, and now we were both trapped in the consequences.

The first sounds of movement came from the hallways outside. Soldiers were regrouping. I drew my sword and stepped closer to Mira. She was ready. Her shadows moved like liquid around her fingers, her stance precise, controlled, deadly.

I wanted to tell her not to fight. I wanted to tell her to trust me, but the memory of her screams, of her pain, of her eyes the last time I had seen her alive, would not allow it.

We moved together, side by side. Shadows and steel. Every soldier that came at us fell. I noticed how Mira coordinated her attacks with mine without speaking. Years of separation had not dulled our connection. We moved in sync instinctively.

Then came the mage. He had not died. He had been waiting, using the Core to recover, to rebuild his power. He stepped forward, hands glowing with energy. His eyes were cold, calculating.

“You think you have won?” he said. “You do not understand the power you face.”

Mira’s eyes narrowed. “You underestimated me before. You will again.”

He laughed softly. “You still fight with rage. Rage clouds judgment. You should fear me.”

I stepped forward, placing myself between Mira and the mage. “We do not fear you. Not anymore.”

He glanced at me. “And who are you to stand in her way?”

I did not answer. Words were useless. The fight would decide the truth.

He attacked first. Magic flew through the air, colliding with shadows and steel. Mira moved fluidly, her shadows intercepting attacks, striking soldiers, deflecting spells. I moved beside her, cutting down anyone who came too close.

Every time I glanced at her, I noticed the subtle ways she watched me. Not with trust. Not with love. But with recognition. Recognition that I was here, that I had survived, that I had not given up on her.

The mage struck again, and this time I was caught off guard. A blast of energy sent me sliding across the floor. Mira’s hand was on my arm instantly, pulling me up. Her grip was firm, commanding, reminding me that she was in control.

“You cannot save me every time,” I said, straightening.

“I do not need saving,” she said, voice tight. Her eyes were focused on the mage. “I need to finish this.”

And she did. Shadows leapt from her hands, striking the mage, forcing him back. I moved in behind her, attacking at the same time. He staggered. We were relentless, unstoppable, a force he could not match.

Then the floor shook violently. The Core reacted, pulsing with energy that rippled through the chamber. Stones cracked, dust filled the air. Mira stumbled slightly, and I caught her. My hand brushed hers.

She did not pull away.

I wanted to say something, but there was no time. The mage regained his footing, summoning more soldiers. He had not come alone.

Mira straightened, eyes blazing. “We fight together,” she said.

“Yes,” I said, voice low. “Together.”

We did. Shadows and steel, magic and force. Every movement precise, every strike coordinated. Soldiers fell. The mage was pushed back toward the Core. His energy clashed with ours. Sparks and magic filled the chamber.

Then he paused. His expression changed. Something inside him had shifted. He glanced at the Core, then at us. “You—” he began, but before he could finish, Mira struck. Shadows wrapped around him, holding him in place. I moved forward, sword poised.

“You will not take this from us,” I said.

Mira’s hand brushed mine again as she focused on the Core. Energy surged into her, stabilizing it. She looked at me, a flicker of something unspoken passing between us. Relief, anger, desire. All tangled together.

We were victorious, but the chamber was unstable. The Core pulsed dangerously, threatening to explode. I glanced at Mira. “We need to leave. Now.”

She nodded. Shadows wrapped around our feet as we moved toward the exit. The mage struggled, still bound by her power. “This is not over,” he hissed. “The Queen—”

We did not wait to hear more. We had survived today. That was enough.

Mira POV

Outside the chamber, the tower was collapsing. Stones fell, ceilings cracked, and the air was thick with smoke. Every step was dangerous. My shadows guided us, keeping debris at bay, clearing a path for us to escape.

Jason stayed close. His sword ready, eyes scanning for threats. I could feel the tension between us, heavier than the dust and smoke. Every glance, every step, every touch was charged. Not trust. Not love. Something dangerous. Something we both refused to name.

“Jason,” I said quietly. “Do you understand now?”

He glanced at me. “I understand more than I ever wanted to.”

I kept moving. The tower groaned under its own weight. The Core above pulsed violently. If it exploded, we could die here together. Or apart.

“Watch the floor,” Jason said. “Rubble is falling.”

I moved quickly, shadows shielding us. I could hear his heartbeat, steady, strong, yet uneven with tension. We did not speak again until we reached the outer walls, standing on the edge of the tower where the night wind swept through the broken stones.

The mage was gone. The Core stabilized temporarily. The Council’s soldiers had fled.

We were alone.

For a moment, I allowed myself to breathe. To feel that I had survived. To feel that Jason had survived.

He looked at me. His expression was unreadable. “You fought well,” he said.

“You should have left me alone,” I said, voice cold.

“And you would have done what?” he asked. His tone was calm, steady, unyielding.

“I would have survived,” I said.

He studied me for a moment. Then he nodded. “I know.”

We stood in silence, watching the stars through the broken roof. The wind whipped around us. The tower behind us was crumbling. The Core pulsed faintly, a reminder that the danger was not over. The Queen’s trap, the Council’s betrayal, the mage’s power—none of it had ended.

And yet, despite everything, I felt something I had not felt in years. Not forgiveness. Not trust. Not love. But connection. A recognition that we were bound together, whether we liked it or not.

Jason stepped closer. His hand hovered near mine, almost touching. I did not move away. We did not speak.

The Core pulsed again, faintly, dangerously. The night was far from over. The Council would strike again. The Queen would have her revenge. And we would have to be ready.

Together.

But whether we could survive together, whether we could trust each other fully, remained uncertain.

And in the dark, amidst betrayal, vengeance, and desire, we knew one truth.

The Shadow Wolf and the prince were dangerous. And they were not finished.
