Chapter 177 Time Moves On

Chapter 177 Time Moves On
\[Raelyn's POV\]

Miscarrying.
Did the doctor really just say that I was miscarrying?
No. That couldn't be. It couldn't...but even as I try to convince myself that that isn't what is going on here, pain rips through me.
"NURSE!" The doctor roars. "We need to begin medicine to stop the contractions!"
"On it," he nurse calls, and then she is moving, heading out of the room while the doctor prepares for what is about to happen.
"I'm going to do my best." He murmurs as Osiris wraps his hand around my own. "But I can't make any promises."
"Do everything you can," Osiris orders him and then gives my hand a squeeze. "It's going to be alright." he tells me, his voice gentle, though I can see the fear that is in his eyes and feel it through his touch. "It's going to be okay."
"Yeah," I murmur, though I feel like I'm crumbling into pieces.
For the next few minutes, time seems to go extra slowly, ticking away like eternity until the nurse finally returns with a bag of clear IV fluid in tow.
"Here," she announces beginning to prep the bag. "Let's get you on an IV."
She moves quickly ,efficiently as she finds a vein in the dip of my elbow and then jabs it, and once she's done, she begins adminstering the fluids.
Instantly, I feel the pain that I was suffering disappear as she and the doctor begin to do something beneath me. I can't see what is happening, with each passing minute, I can barely even feel anything, but when I feel a strange sensation like something is erupting from me, I know exactly what is happening.
"Get this child to the NICU," the doctor commands, handing the baby to his nurse. "Get it there and start doing everything you can to save it."
The doctors words rip me through, making my body feel like it has been dunked in ice cold water, and when my mind starts to swim, and my vision becomes blurry, warmth coming from my hand, keeps me anchored.
"It's going to be okay," Osiris tells me, his voice sure. "It's going to be okay."
As the doctor works on, he repeats this mantra again and again like it is a magic spell, and by the time everything settles, and the doctor steps back and gives me a look of relief, I find myself feeling like it's going to work out.
However when I'm put in a room, and the reality of the situation starts to settle in around me, I can't stop the fear that I have been trying so hard to ignore.
My baby.
What if my baby didn't make it?
This was my fault.
I wasn't careful enough.
All these thoughts race through my as the doctor works to hook me up to the machines around me.
Only when he finishes and Osiris and I are finally alone, do I finally feel myself collapsing.
Tears begin to well, pouring down my cheeks, as I blame myself again and again for what has happened, and all Osiris can do is hold me and repeat his magical spell.
For the first day, there is no news.
On the second, there's still none.
When the third comes, and I'm finally able to move a bit, Osiris and I are shown to the NICU where my baby lays in bed covered with so many wires, and an air mask fixed to its nose and mouth.
He, a boy who I'm certain will grow to look just like Osiris, looks so small, much too small, and his skin is a mix of red and purple. He looks so weak and fragile, but even then he fights on like he did in the womb.
"My baby," I whisper, touching the side of the machine he is in. "I'm so sorry."
As I speak, more fat tears start falling down my cheeks, and as they fall, Osiris pulls me against his large body.
What once brought me so much comfort, does nothing to fix my breaking heart, and when my nurse comes and finds us and tells me that it is time for my treatment and checks, I want to cling to that machine, and stay with my child. However, I can't, not when I know that if I don't go through with my treatment, I could risk losing the other child still within me.
"I'll be back," I whisper, touching the side of the machine once more, and then I allow Osiris to lead me back to my room where Jean is waiting.
She still looks exhausted. There are dark circles under her eyes, and her complexion doesn't look well, but then again, how could it when her mother was currently sitting in prison?
After everything that happened with Osiris' stepmother, and Jean's mother, things were still not back to normal.
Jean's mother turned herself in for the murder of Ray, and for her part in what happened, and Osiris' stepmother also sat in jail for the same charges.
Ray's funeral was still to be held since Osiris refused to leave my side in the hospital, but after a lot of convincing, he agreed to hold a small sendoff ceremony, the following day.
As for Adeline, she was also dealing with the aftermath, but not so much in the way the rest of us were. Since it became clear that Osiris and I were together, and that we were expecting, Adeline finally came out to her parents. From what Osiris told me, they didn't necessarily take it well, but they still let Adeline remain in her position as future alpha.
Time was moving forward. People were moving forward. Life was still going on even if it wasn't exactly the same for the rest of us after what happened.
"Jean," I say now, heading toward the woman.
As I close the distance between us, she gives me a pained look and I'm certain that she probably blames herself a bit for what happened, but I simply take a seat on the bed, and then get comfortable.
"You could have rested a bit more." I tell her as Osiris' phone starts ringing and he steps out of the room. "You've been pushing yourself too much."
"I need the distraction," she tells me, her hands pressing against my stomach. "If I sit still, I just..." she trails off, but I'm certain that she is saying that she is haunted by the images of that dreadful battle.
"It's over," I assure her. "No one else can hurt us."
"But even then the damage is still done."
