Everything hurts. My head is spinning. And I’m struggling to stay conscious.
Something’s wrong.
Something is terribly wrong and with each passing minute I feared that something serious would happen.
“Osiris,” I whisper, drawing his attention from the wall of bodies and to me. “I think something’s wrong.”
“What do you mean?” He asks, but I’m unable to answer as a wave of pain slams into me followed by pressure down below.
“Hurry,” I whimper, curling into him. “Something’s wrong.”
I could feel it. I knew that something that shouldn’t be happening was happening and I feared that if we didn’t make it to the hospital in time then all would be lost and I was certain that Osiris felt it too because before I could say anything more he was moving, shoving through the crowd around us and then bursting out into the night.
Biting down on my lip, I try to hold back the fear that I’m feeling as Osiris gently places me into his car and then slams the gas, sending us speeding through the night.
When we arrive at the hospital, Osiris doesn’t waste any time parking and then pulling me out of the car and rushing inside.
“HELP!” He yells, showing vulnerability. “She needs a doctor now!”
As he speaks, I watch nurses rush toward us and when they see the blood that is slowly dripping down my legs they grab a gurney and instruct Osiris to place me on it.
“Osiris,” I gasp as they start rolling me away. “Don’t leave my side.”
“I won’t,” he assures me, but when we reach the room a nurse turns and looks at him.
“Sir,” she says, bravelly instructing Osiris. “We need to do an examination and…”
“I’m not leaving her side.” Osiris growls, cutting the poor woman off before she can even finish her words. “Whatever the hell you need to do to her you can do with me beside her.”
“But…” She tries and stops as Osiris lets out another growl of warning. “Nevermind.”
Satisfied, Osiris squeezes my hand gently and then takes his place beside me while the nurses work to hook me up to machines and get my vitals.
Once they finish a doctor comes rushing in and when he sees Osiris his face whitens.
“You’re…” He begins, but stops as Osiris nods toward me.
“Focus on her,” he announces. “She’s the patient.”
“Right,” the doctor responds, turning his gaze to me. “Ma’am can you explain to us exactly what is going on.”
“I’m pregnant,” I whisper while tears threaten to fall. “With twins and…Ugh…”
I don’t get to finish my words before pain shoots through me and the pressure worsens.
“Doctor,” Osiris hisses. “Less talking, more helping.”
“R-right,” the doctor gasps, understanding the situation. “First, we should do an ultrasound to see how the pups are doing.”
Finished speaking, the doctor begins to move, rushing out of the room while the nurses remain on standby and when he returns, he quickly prepares the machine.
“Alright, let’s see,” he begins, placing the wand in his hand against my belly. “I’m assuming the problem is the pups fighting for dominance, yes?”
“That’s correct,” Osiris responds before I can. “We’ve had a mage working on keeping them calm, but…”
He trails off and I understand why he doesn’t want to mention what has happened.
“Has the mage not rendered treatment recently?” The doctor asks, not pushing.
“No,” Osiris responds as I fix my gaze on the screen and wait. “So, could you please try to do something.”
For a moment, the doctor doesn’t respond as he begins to move the wand in his hand around until it comes to rest on one of the pups.
“This one seems fine,” he murmurs, checking multiple angles of the pup. “Strong heartbeat, looks like all limbs are forming properly, and it seems to be content.”
“And the other?” Osiris demand, noticing that I can’t see the other pup in the screen. “How is…”
“Osiris,” I whisper as the pain and pressure continue to increase. “It hurts.”
“What hurts?” The doctor asks, jumping into action. “Please, tell me what you’re feeling.”
“My lower stomach,” I respond, trying to ignore the fiery pain that radiates there. “It hurts.”
“Nurse!” The doctor calls, drawing the attention of his nurses. “I need you to pull out the stirrups so that I can do a quick pelvic examine.”
“Yes, doctor.” They respond, doing as instructed and once they finish, the doctor turns his gentle gaze on me.
“Please place your feet on the stirrups so that I can get a look, okay?”
“Okay,” I respond as Osiris growls, but he doesn’t argue or fight as I do as instructed.
“Alright,” the doctor murmurs, positioning himself between my legs, let’s get a look, shall we?”
Nodding, I wait while he starts to move around, checking here and there. I should be embarrassed to have him down there taking all of me in, but I’m in too much pain to worry.
“It’s going to be okay,” Osiris whispers, trying to distract me from what is happening. “It’s going to be okay.”
“Are you sure?” I ask as the doctor lets out a hiss.
“Nurse,” he calls, drawing one of the women to him. “I need you to go and find a midwife now.”
“Midwife,” Osiris barks. “And why the hell would you need one of those?”
“Because this woman’s cervix is dilated and I fear that the pups may be coming out now.”
"Now," I repeat, my heart squeezing painfully as fear starts to surge through me. "What do you mean now? It's too early."
"Just try to remain calm," the doctor urges me. "The stress isn't good for your body."
"But you just said…" I continue, but stop as Osiris places a hand over my mouth.
"Doctor," he says slowly, turning his attention on the nervous man in front of us. "Give it to us straight and don't you dare try to fucking hide anything. What the hell is happening right now? You said that one of the pups looked good but now you're saying that they're trying to come out. How can both things be true at once?"
Growing quiet, Osiris waits while the doctor stares at us, clear pity in his eyes.
"I fear that you may be miscarrying one of the pups and that was why we couldn't find it in the ultrasound." He explains. "But if that is the case then we need to do everything we can to save the other."
