Chapter 179

Chapter 179
Bellas pov-

Finn’s letter lies open on the war room table, its crumpled edges stark under the chandelier’s light, his scrawled plea—protect Bella, make it right—shaking my resolve like a storm. Freya’s confession in the hospital wing, her bloodied arm and raw account of sabotaging Veyra’s ritual cave, chips at the wall of distrust I’ve built, but her past—her hands on my throat, my skull cracking against concrete—haunts me, a shadow I can’t banish. The twins’ heartbeats pulse softly, a steady hum urging me to focus, to lead, but Veyra’s cult, now holding Finn captive and marching on the pack, is a noose tightening around us. Kaya stirs, her growl a fire in my chest, demanding action, but Freya’s letter, her hesitation in the raid, keeps my suspicion sharp, a blade I can’t sheathe.

Caesar stands beside me, his hand steady on my shoulder, a warmth I crave, but his trust in Freya, even after her faltering in the clearing, grates like sand in a wound. Our bond, strained since the breakfast argument, feels fragile, his faith in her a wedge I can’t dislodge. I want to lean into him, to let his strength anchor me, but the letter’s words and his defense of her in the war room hold me back. Amber hovers near the maps, her hope for Finn burning bright, her eyes alight with the ritual’s echo of his survival, but her secret meeting with Freya, confessed in the library, stings, a crack in our friendship that mirrors my own doubts. Her guilt is a weight we share, but Sara’s absence and Finn’s captivity demand we set it aside, for now.

David paces, his calm fraying, a Lycan text clutched in his hands. “We can’t storm the cave,” he says, his voice heavy. “Veyra’s numbers are too great. “Then we trade," I say, my voice firm, meeting his gaze. “My blood for Sara and Finn at the packs edge.” Kaya roars approval, her fire surging, but Caesar’s hand tightens, his eyes flashing with raw fear. “ Bella, no.” he growls, his voice thick. “The twins, Bella—you can’t.”

I meet his gaze, my heart aching but my resolve ironclad. “For Sara,  we set a trap for Veyra,” I say, my voice steady despite the fear coiling inside.  “And if we fail?" Amber asks, her voice tight, her eyes fixed on Finn's letter. “It won't," I say, my resolve strong. " We fight together."

Caesar’s   jaw clenches, his hand gripping mine, his fear for the twins a storm in his eyes. “Bella,” he says, his voice breaking, pulling me close, his arms wrapping around me, my armor pressing against his. “You’re carrying our future, our pups. I can’t lose you.” His voice is raw, his breath warm against my ear, and I feel the twins’ heartbeats, a vow we share. “You won’t,” I whisper, my hands framing his face, his stubble rough under my palms. “We do this together, Caesar, for our pack, our family.” His lips crash into mine, a desperate, hungry kiss, his hands tangling in my cape, pulling me closer, Kaya humming with his touch. “I’ll fight beside you,” he vows, his forehead against mine, his eyes fierce. “No one takes you from me.” We step back, his hand lingering, and Freya’s arrival sharpens our focus.

Freya enters, her arm bandaged from her cave fight, her eyes pleading for a chance to prove herself. “Let me scout,” she says, her voice low, raw. “I know Veyra’s tactics, her scouts’ patterns.” Her confession, handing me Finn’s letter, softened my distrust, but her past and her hesitation in the raid linger, a shadow I can’t fully dispel. I nod, wary but hopeful, her sabotage of the cult’s ritual a step toward atonement. “Go,” I say, my voice cool, and she bows her head, slipping out, her claws glinting. Caesar watches her go, his doubt mirroring mine, and I wonder if we’re gambling too much on her.

The war room empties as preparations begin, warriors gathering weapons, their murmurs a mix of fear and resolve. I strap on my armor, the steel cool against my skin, the crimson cape billowing as I move, a symbol of the Alpha I’ve become despite Freya’s scars. Caesar coordinates the warriors, his voice steady, while Amber checks her kit, her eyes distant, Finn’s echo driving her. David prepares ritual wards, muttering about countering Veyra’s magic, his hands steady despite the stakes. I catch Caesar’s glance, a flicker of our lost warmth, and I want to bridge the divide, to tell him I trust his leadership, but Freya’s shadow and the cult’s threat stop me.

Night falls, the pack’s edge cloaked in darkness, the air heavy with pine and the cult’s ash-and-blood scent. We wait, warriors hidden in the trees, their blades sheathed to avoid glinting. My armor gleams faintly, my cape snapping in the wind, Kaya’s power humming beneath my skin. Freya returns, her report grim—Veyra’s approaching, Finn in tow, Sara likely close. I nod, my heart pounding, the twins’ heartbeats a vow I’m fighting for. Caesar stands at my side, his blade ready, his presence a rock, but his earlier objection lingers, his fear a weight we share. Amber crouches nearby, her dagger drawn, her hope for Finn a fire that mirrors my resolve for Sara.

Veyra steps into the clearing, her presence a dark void, and Finn stumbles besides her bound, his face bruised twisting my heart. Kaya growls urging me to act. But I signal the warriors to wait, my blood a bait, my fear for the twins, a pulse I fight to steady.  Veyra’s claws glint, her sneer revealing elongated canines, and she gestures to Finn, her voice a venomous hiss. “The Luna’s blood for the man and the pup,” she says, her eyes locking on me, hungry. I step forward, my armor clinking, my blood the bait, but Kaya growls, sensing a trap. Caesar’s hand brushes mine, a silent plea, but I nod, ready to play this out.

The trade begins, but Veyra’s smirk betrays her—she’s brought reinforcements, and the trap’s on us.
