Chapter 39

Chapter 39

Rose’s POV

“How are you, my dear daughter?” he asked. He grabbed my chin, but I quickly pulled away. How cliché. Funny to think that the man standing right in front of me is the same one who brought me into this world—and now wants to kill us. Tsk, tsk. Pathetic.

“Miss me, daughter?” he asked with a grin. Beside him, Keira had her hands on his neck, her face leaning against the back of it. Ugh. So that’s Keira’s taste? Gross.

Yuck! And here I thought I’d be shocked if Lester was the one doing something disgusting—but apparently, I understand it more coming from my father, who is, what, over 300 years old?

“Why would we miss you, Logan?” I asked, narrowing my eyes. She just smiled like she was clever.

“Well, same here, daughter,” he replied while kissing Keira. Ugh, get a room!

“Wow, Mom,” I muttered sarcastically in my head. “Did you buy yourself a kid? Or maybe some cheap, low-class werewolves? We should give them a round of applause.”

I know she heard me, wherever she is. My mom would never let this slide—especially with my siblings involved. They’re making their way here right now.

“Yuck! Don’t call me ‘daughter.’ And if you’re going to have sex in front of me, can you not? Postpone it. You’re disgusting.”

That clearly struck a nerve. Keira glared at me, but I just raised an eyebrow. “I didn’t think your standards had dropped so low, Logan. Tsk, tsk, tsk. Mother must be overjoyed in her world right now, seeing what a cheap werewolf you’ve chosen.”

My words made both of them narrow their eyes at me. If looks could kill, I’d have a thousand holes in my body by now.

“Why—”

Err, what do I even call her? Wife? Mistress? Homewrecker? I don’t even know.

My father spoke, “Watch your tongue. I won’t kill you yet, even though I want to. Selene will get to you first. All of you are stubborn. But I know you depend on her decisions.”

He grabbed Keira by the chin and kissed her again, right there in front of me. Demons, the both of them.

“Oops, my dear daughter,” he continued, “I have a proposal for you. Join me and my army, and I’ll spare your life. I’ll even bring your wolf back.”

I scoffed. Me? Joining his army? What does he think I am—a dog that follows orders? “Never,” I answered firmly.

He gripped my chin violently. “If that’s what you want… Fine. Honey,” he turned to Keira, “take care of her for now. I have something to do.” Then he kissed her again before walking out of my cell.

God! I would’ve covered my eyes if I could—but my hands were chained. “Wow, you’re really going to have a relationship with my dad,” I said mockingly, my voice strained from fatigue and thirst.

She punched me hard in the mouth. I tasted blood immediately, my teeth and lips stinging from the blow. Short-tempered!

“That’s all you’ve got? Weak! You can only hit me like that because I’m tied up. Free me, and I’ll show you what a real punch is.” My mouth was full of blood, but I still forced the words out. Her day will come.

“What am I stupid for? I’m enjoying this,” she laughed darkly.

Oh, how I wished I could smash her face in right now. But I couldn’t—not yet. I needed to survive first.

“Heh. Better to be stupid than a coward like you,” I spat, turning my head and letting the blood hit the floor.

If only my spit was acidic, I’d have melted her already.

“Ah, ah, don’t play with me, Rose. I know you. Just wait until I kill you and your siblings. Then Logan and I will rule the world. I’ll be his queen,” she declared.

She laughed like a maniac—my old friend turned ambitious lunatic. What a shame.

I smirked. “Tell Selene that when you see her. Let’s see if she doesn’t have your head rolling.”

Selene’s POV

Arrghh! I don’t know why, but I’ve been feeling so weak these past few days. I’m always dizzy and vomiting in the mornings, and it’s starting to annoy me.

It’s like my stomach wants us to just live here in the bathroom. I buried my face in my arm, resting near the grip bar in the bathroom I share with my husband.

“Love, are you okay?” Dwight asked me worriedly. I didn’t even bother closing the door—honestly, I don’t have the energy for that anymore. These days, I’m too lazy to do anything I usually enjoy. All I want is to rest and sleep all day.

“No, I’m not,” I answered lazily. He helped me out of the bathroom and sat me on the bed, sitting beside me and wrapping his arm around my waist.

“Baby, I’m worried… this could be something serious.” He kissed the back of my hand and then my forehead. The stress from our problems these past days could be the cause of this.

“No, baby. I think it’s just from all the stress we’ve been dealing with,” I replied, resting my head on his chest.
“You need to see the Pack Doctor so we can be sure, okay?” he told me firmly.

I nodded and cuddled closer to him. Ah, I’m so comfortable with my human bear. I love his scent so much.
“Love, I have to go downstairs to see Crater,” he said, pulling away.

I whimpered, making him groan. Ohhh, so that’s why he’s already dressed—it’s Pack business! That traitor in our Pack still hasn’t confessed yet. Ugh, I’m really getting pissed off at my father!

If we ever meet, I’ll kill him myself. Because of him, my mate and our Pack members can’t have any peace. Dwight stood, adjusting his clothes.

“Can I come?” I asked. He glared at me, and I frowned. “What? I just want to know if he knows something. Please… please…” I pouted with my puppy-dog eyes. I know he can’t resist that.

I smiled when he sighed and nodded. “But—”
Ugh, why is there a ‘but’? I gave him my don’t-leave-me-hanging look.

“But you have to stay calm, okay? I don’t want you to get hurt because of your temper. And you still have to see the Pack Doctor after this,” he said seriously.

Ugh! Why does he have to look so hot when he’s serious? Now my thoughts are wandering somewhere… and of course—
“Shit! Baby, don’t think like that! You know I can see it in your head!” he exclaimed, groaning.

Oops. I mentally smacked my forehead. I must have forgotten to raise my mind barrier. I flashed him a peace sign. These past days, I’ve been very hormonal.

Every night we’ve been… well, you know… doing what married couples do. Then I glanced at the calendar, suddenly realizing what might be happening to me.

“Damn! Love! Slow down, you almost tripped,” he scolded, but I ignored him, rushing to grab the wall calendar and count.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and so on… My eyes widened. It’s been two weeks since my last period! So that’s why I’ve been waiting for my ‘red tide’ these past days—it never came.

“Baby Love, why are you looking at the calendar?” he asked, hugging me from behind.

No, I can’t tell him right now. If my suspicion is true, I don’t want to give him false hope. Besides, the battle with Logan’s followers is drawing near.

It’s not that I don’t want to get pregnant—but not now. We have too many problems.
“Nothing, Love. I’m just checking how many days we have left to train the Pack,” I lied smoothly.

He hugged me tighter. “I know something is bothering you, my dear wife,” he whispered in my ear. I groaned at the ticklish sensation running through my body.

“There’s really nothing, baby. Come on, let’s go to the prison—we still have a Were to interrogate,” I said, changing the subject and heading out first.

I heard him sigh, then his footsteps followed. I promised myself I’d go to the Pack Doctor later. Hopefully, my suspicion isn’t true… because if it is, my mate will definitely not let me join the war.

Mom, really? You give warnings but couldn’t include this one?! I grumbled in my head.

“Selene, I’ll go with you to the Pack Doctor after this,” Dwight said sternly.
Shit! Shit! And another shit! I glanced at him. I’d been so deep in thought I didn’t notice we’d already reached the prison entrance.

“I can go by myself, Dwight. I know you still have a lot to do,” I insisted.
He shook his head. Definitely a no.

“I just want to make sure my mate is healthy. I couldn’t bear to lose you,” he said sincerely. With him talking like that, who wouldn’t agree?

Haist… no choice. Fine, whatever the Avengers decide. “If that’s what you want. Okay,” I said. He smiled wide and kissed me on the lips before taking my hand, and we went in together.

Promise, this will be my last time coming here. The smell of death and blood fills this place. I think I’m going to puke again—but maybe later.

We walked down the straight hallway to its end. I think this leads to the torture room.

“Are you ready, wife?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Do I have a choice?” I replied sarcastically. He chuckled, unlocking the door.

Inside, four half-naked, extremely handsome men stood around someone—probably Josh. I heard a growl behind me. Did I say that out loud?

Ugh, jealous as always. He must have heard my comment. Sometimes, my mouth and my mind act on their own.

My brother turned and greeted us, kissing my forehead. The others greeted me too, and I just smiled back.

“Did he give the exact location?” the handsome man behind me asked. Tsk, figures he wouldn’t let it go.

I could feel Dwight’s eyes burning into my back, so I pinched him. He just winked at me, but I heard Lester whisper to his comrades:
“I smelled sex,” he said with a teasing laugh.

I raised my clenched fist toward him, making him gulp twice. Everyone laughed.
“Beta Lester, stop teasing my wife. Just answer my question,” my mate said seriously.

Everyone instantly went back to their serious mode—they know when to play and when to focus. Oh, and Lester is now Beta while Crater is TIC, as per their discussion earlier.

Men’s talk—ugh, I hate hearing that. I mentally rolled my eyes.

“I’m sorry, Alpha, but we’re coming up empty. He still refuses to talk,” Lester answered.

I looked at the accused—he was sitting on a chair, bloody and defenseless. They had used silver knives and other silver-made tools to torture him.

He just kept his head down, listening to us. Somehow, I felt pity—not as a friend, but as a fellow Wolf.

He’d lost his mate. That’s one of the worst pains a Werewolf can feel. Some take their own lives from the grief; others lose their sanity.

Some become rogues and destroy other Packs. I felt guilty—Josh deserves to be happy. Like us, he chose to turn his back on my father rather than follow him.

I couldn’t stop my tears from falling as I knelt in front of him.
“Selene! What are you doing?!” Dwight shouted angrily behind me. I knew he was furious.

I could also sense the others holding him back.
“Let me handle this, baby,” I mind-linked him. I looked at my mate, silently pleading for his permission.

He sighed… and nodded.
