Chapter 212 Kaden's POV
Chapter 212 Kaden's POV
She left for the medical wing around two. I gave her thirty minutes, then followed.
Damian had her on an exam table, running tests. Blood samples neurological assessments. Everything that might indicate possession or consciousness splitting.
I watched through the one-way glass in his office. I saw her laugh at something he said. I saw her seem completely normal.
Maybe we were wrong, maybe this was all a huge mistake.
Damian finished the exam and sent her home. Came to find me in his office.
"Well?"
"The results will take a few hours to process. But Kaden, I did a basic consciousness assessment. Asked questions designed to detect if multiple personalities or entities are present."
"And?"
"Inconclusive, she showed some signs that could indicate splitting moments where she seemed confused about recent events, times she couldn't account for. But that could also be from trauma or stress."
"So we still don't know."
"Not definitively we need more time and more observation."
"We don't have time. If she is dangerous, if she is killing people during blackouts, we need to act now."
"And do what? Lock up Luna based on suspicion? Accuse her of crimes she doesn't remember committing?"
He was right, we couldn't act without proof. But we also couldn't ignore the danger.
"I'm going to have her watched," I said finally.
"Round the clock surveillance guards who report to me directly about her movements, especially at night."
"She will notice guards following her everywhere."
"Not if they are subtle, hidden she won't know they are there unless she does something suspicious."
"You are spying on your own mate."
"I'm protecting my pack and protecting her from herself if necessary."
Damian looked uncomfortable but didn't argue. "The test results should be ready by evening. I will call you as soon as I know anything."
I left the medical wing feeling sick and guilty like I was betraying Elara's trust.
But what choice did I have? I had evidence of danger. Testimony from witnesses of dark magic in her blood.
I couldn't ignore that, not even for love.
I called Marcus to my office. "I need a team. Five of our most skilled trackers. People who can move undetected, people who can keep secrets."
"What for?"
"I need them to watch someone follow their movements. Report any suspicious activity directly to me no one else can know about this surveillance. Understood?"
"Who are we watching?"
I hesitated saying it out loud to make it real. Made it an official action instead of just paranoid thoughts.
"Elara we are watching Elara."
Marcus's eyes widened. "The Luna? Why?"
"I can't explain right now just trust me that it is necessary. Can you assemble the team without raising suspicion?"
"Yes. But Kaden, if you are surveilling your own mate, something serious must be happening."
"This is why this needs to stay absolutely confidential. The team reports to me only, no written records, no digital traces, just verbal updates."
"Understood. When do you want them in position?"
"Tonight before sunset. I want eyes on her from the moment it gets dark until sunrise."
Marcus left to assemble the team. I sat at my desk feeling like the worst mate in existence.
But I kept seeing that photo. Elara covered in blood, standing over bodies looking like a stranger wearing her face.
I had to understand what was happening to her even if the truth destroyed us both.
My phone rang. Damian. "The preliminary results are in."
"And?"
"The dark magic is definitely present. Stronger than in previous tests. And Kaden, it is growing, spreading, taking up more space in her bloodstream."
"What does that mean?"
"It means whatever this is, it is getting worse. More powerful, more dominant."
"Is it possession?"
"I still can't say definitively but something is definitely wrong, something beyond normal trauma or stress."
"Can you stop it? Reverse it?"
"Not without knowing what it is first and to figure that out, I would need to run more invasive tests. Tests Elara would definitely notice and question."
"Do them anyway I will deal with her questions we need answers."
"Kaden, are you sure? Once we cross this line, once we start treating her like a threat instead of a patient, there is no going back."
"I'm sure. My priority is keeping the pack safe. Even if that means treating my mate as a potential danger."
"Alright. I will schedule the advanced tests for tomorrow morning."
I hung up and stared out the window at the pack grounds below.
Somewhere out there, Elara was going about her Luna duties, helping people caring for Adrian being the woman I loved.
But at night, something else might emerge. Something dark, something violent. Something that needed to be stopped before it hurt more people.
And I was the only one who could authorize the actions necessary to stop it.
Even if those actions meant investigating, surveilling, and potentially restraining my own mate.
The woman I had sworn to love and protect.
I just hoped that when this was over, when we knew the truth, there would still be something left to love.
Something left to protect because right now, it felt like I was watching everything I cared about slowly disintegrate.
And I had no idea how to stop it or if it could even be stopped at all.
The sun was setting soon it would be dark, soon my guards would be in position. Watching waiting.
And we had finally known if my worst fears were justified or if I was destroying my relationship with Elara over nothing.
Either way, tonight would reveal the truth.
And I wasn't sure I was ready for what that truth might be.
