Chapter 18 The Guard
Liam’s POV
That was not how I planned to tell everyone about finding my mate, but I had no choice.
You think this will work. Elder Rowan asked through the mind link.
It’s not a full plan, but if the rogues are being organized by someone, then I would feel it. I said.
When I was younger, before my parents died, they had told me and Sarah about our ancestors being the first werewolves, though we weren’t exactly from the direct line but we still had their blood and their gifts.
Mine was the ability to read a wolf’s aura. It didn’t have to be a wolf from my pack, it could be anyone, it was one of the things I loved about my gift.
The powers would awaken when we turned twenty and that was true, when I became twenty years old, my powers came to light.
As Elder Rowan made the announcement, I looked around for anything that seemed weird.
Everyone had the same feelings flowing through them, some were doubtful, some curious, some were green which showed they were jealous, just like Celine’s aura now but it wasn’t what I was looking for.
I felt it before I saw it, a black aura filled with anger and hatred, I looked at the person it was oozing off.
It was a guard, he was tall and bulky as he should be but his eyes had this vacant look and I knew that look anywhere.
It was the look of a killer.
He had been glaring at Elena when his eyes met mine, he looked uncomfortable and looked away.
I smirked. We've got you, asshole. My wolf, Connor beamed.
I wished I had asked Josh to come with me to the meeting, he could have helped me corner the guard, but I was on my own with this.
We took our seats among the elders, that’s the way it has always been, I didn’t know why at first but now I know it was because of my family‘s heritage.
The council meeting wasn’t really a meeting, discussing serious issues here was considered dangerous and foolish, so it became a front for all the Alphas to meet up.
I kept my eye on the guard, watching him in case he made a move.
“I will be back, I need to use the bathroom,” Elena leaned in as she spoke, her scent becoming more clear these days and more intoxicating.
I wanted to tell her not to go but I knew I couldn’t.
She got out of her chair, when Celine bumped into her and slipped her drink on my mate.
I growled.
“I’m so sorry, Elena,” Celine said but I knew she was lying, it was clearly showing in her aura.
“It’s fine,” Elena said, as she headed to the bathroom.
I glared at Celine, she looked away, and went back to her table.
I wanted to go with Elena but I couldn’t, I needed to watch the guard.
I kept watching him, waiting for him to make a move, when Alpha Vincent walked up to my face, blocking the guard from my sight.
“Liam, Elders,” he bowed.
“I just came to say hello and offer your congratulations on finding your mate.”
Couldn’t he have waited?
“Thank you, Vincent,” I gritted my teeth.
He smiled.
The man was only being nice to me because a year ago, the Elder’s council had accused him of theft and bribery, he paid for his crimes but now he wanted to be on good terms with the Elders and he thinks I would help him with that.
The asshole was really something.
The elders looked irritated by his presence and I was sure I had the same look, he laughed nervously like someone had said something funny.
He bowed and left.
By the time he was gone, I looked at where the guard was standing but he wasn’t there.
Shit.
I looked around, using my gift as it was faster to check auras than to look through a swarm of people.
I kept searching until I got it, I followed the trail of black.
My heart dropped.
It was coming from the bathroom, Elena was in there.
I want all the guards blocking all the exits to the hall. I linked Elder Rowan.
What’s wrong, Liam? Elder Rowan looked confused.
He’s going after Elena. I roared through the link, leaving my seat and heading for the bathroom.
I got closer, I used my hearing, there were only three heartbeats in there.
Fear and anger washed over me with the thought that Elena was only in there with two people who were ready to harm her.
I was going to kill them all.
We have to protect our mate. Connor roared in my head.
I agreed with him.
I had only just found her and I was not going to let anyone take her away from me.
