Chapter 60 - Gone too soon!

Chapter 60 - Gone too soon!
Nadia

Our children grew up in a loving home with their parents. In a world where the forest was lush and green and blood didn’t stain the ground. They lived in a world where they could travel all throughout our country without fear. There were no borders anymore and nobody needed permission to cross into anyone’s land. There was no war threatening their lives or their futures.

The trees that Lucca planted were growing at an alarming rate and when our children were a little older, they could imagine what the forest used to look like before the war. We even started a trade route between us and the witch island which helped our healers to widen the range of things we could do. I never forgot about the magic I did by accident, and often wondered if I would be able to do something similar ever again.

I never said anything to anyone about my private thoughts, but I still wondered. Our children quickly grew into young adults and life at the castle became busier than it had ever been when they hit those teenage years. Their friends loved visiting, and I loved having a home filled with children laughing. My life wasn’t filled with the adventures I dreamed of before I met Lucca, but it was filled with so much more.

It was filled with love and light. It was filled with laughter. I can honestly say that I had a wonderful full life.

“My mother always told us that she was happy to go. She had a wonderful life.” I swallowed hard to get rid of the tears that were forming. “She believed she had a full life.” My brother didn’t want to do my mother’s ullage at the funeral. My father was simply shattered, and he just stood there like a statue staring out in front of him. My mom was his destined mate. The love of his life and we were all feeling her loss. “I thought about talking of how she had been taken from us too soon and all the other cliché’s but I know she wouldn’t have liked that. Mom, we are all very sad that you are gone, and we will miss you.” I folded the piece of paper that was stained with my tears.

My father and brother each took a torch and lit the fire. The entire pack stood in silence as the fire consumed my mother’s body. She had been out hunting, and we still had no idea how she was killed. All we knew was that she had somehow been injured badly, and she never woke up again after we found her. This was most probably the saddest day of my entire young life.

I was turning eighteen in less than a month! I thought back to the numerous conversations I had with my mother about my future mate, and it hurt to know that she wasn’t going to be there to share in my happiness. My brother had recently taken over as alpha of the pack and I knew he was sad that she wouldn’t be there to see the man he was turning into.

It happened so suddenly. So brutally. We were all still in shock! After the last embers of the fire burned out, we returned to the castle. Everyone gathered in the ballroom and I smiled and thanked every person who had something to tell us about my mother, or just wanted to say how sad they were. The three of us had to keep it together for the sake of our pack.

We couldn’t cry in front of them. We couldn’t show most emotions. We had to remain strong until we were on our own. I didn’t even cry in front of my brother and father. I could see that they were taking it very hard. No matter how hard they tried to hide it from me. No matter how hard they tried to stay strong for me. I could see the incredible pain they were both in.

We were a shattered family, faking it till we eventually made it. It was sad to think that my mother wouldn’t be there the day I finally met my mate. She wasn’t going to be there when I had my first child. I forced the thoughts out of my mind and greeted another visitor. People kept coming around hours after the funeral ended. My brother disappeared into his office and my father disappeared into the library. That left only me to deal with all the stray visitors.

It was the saddest day in our lives. It was the saddest day in our kingdom. One of our most incredible warriors had died and nobody really knew what to say. There wasn’t much anyone could say that would make it better for anybody else. I was still receiving guests’ weeks after the funeral. My birthday had come and gone without ceremony. I didn’t want to celebrate. My heart was still broken. I was a little sad that my family didn’t remember that it was my birthday, but I didn’t say anything. We had so much to process that I couldn’t bring myself to celebrate. I was glad for the ones who remembered it was my birthday, but I didn’t mention anything to my family. It felt as if my mother’s death had torn us apart. As though she was the glue that had kept us together all these years. Now that she was gone, it felt like there was nothing there to hold us together anymore.

I was in the library reading about her incredible adventures, when I finally decided the time had come for me to have some adventures of my own. For a long time, people speculated about my mother possibly having magical powers and I was curious. Without wasting a single second, I rushed to my brother’s office. I wanted to visit the witch island. Thankfully, he was so busy trying to figure out what happened to my mother, that he hardly paid any attention to me.

All my father had to say was that I had to make sure I took a chaperone with me, and within half an hour, I was packing. I needed to get out of the castle. I needed to get out of the sadness!
