Chapter 58 - A strange ancestor!
Nadia
I followed her instructions to the letter as she guided me through the spell. I felt guilty that we didn’t at least look in on Gillian and tell him what was about to happen, but I couldn’t watch another witch die because of that. I still didn’t understand how the hell I did the spell, but when I said the last words of the spell and felt a shock wave shoot through me, I knew I had done the right thing.
We followed the witch as she rushed to the room where all the sick witches were being cared for. Some were already getting up while the weaker witches were still trying to figure out what was going on. I couldn’t believe that it actually worked! What did this mean? Did I have magic?! There wasn’t time to ponder it really. We had to help the witches and that took all day.
It was late evening by the time they showed Lucca and me to a room and I fell onto the bed. I had never been as tired as I was at that very moment. I slept through the night, which was strange since we weren’t at home. The witches could have turned on us at any time. I only thought about it when I woke up the next morning and Lucca was still sound asleep beside me. Things could have turned out much worse!
Shaking off the feeling, I went in search of something to eat. I found the leader of the witches in the kitchen. She smiled and it changed her entire face! She looked younger and happier! The complete opposite to the woman we captured just days ago. She was busy telling me that they had called off all the attacks on our country and that her people were preparing to help us, when Lucca joined us for breakfast.
It was incredible to watch the witches as they made breakfast and, most importantly, how they took care of one another. All the different supernatural creatures had always fascinated me and I would have loved to stay and find out more about my mysterious magic, but we had to get back home. We had to rebuild what had been destroyed because of a misunderstanding.
No matter how long I wanted to stay, we had to get back to our people. We had to take care of them first. Lucca noticed what I was going through thanks to our mate bond and promised we would come back if the witches allowed us to. With that, we made our way back home. Our people looked battle worn, and it broke my heart to think I was the cause of so much pain. The witches jumped in, and soon their magic had fixed everything that was broken.
Sadly, they couldn’t bring back the people who died in their attacks, but I also couldn’t bring back the witches who died because of the spell. I was sitting on the bench that was the anchor to the other world where the ghosts lived, thinking about everything from that day that I killed Sebastian, when I heard a familiar voice behind me.
“The past is in the past, sweetheart. You can’t blame yourself for things that are done.” Gillian smiled when I whipped around. My eyes wide with shock as I watched him walk around the bench before sitting beside me. There had been no sign of the ghosts after the spell was lifted, and I was beginning to wonder if we would ever see them again!
“You’re alive!” I exclaimed and he burst out laughing.
“Not entirely, but yeah. We survived the change. Some of the ghosts aren’t happy to be back, but others like me are happy to be able to roam free again.” He looked out into the distance and I smiled.
“Gillian, was one of my ancestors a witch?” I frowned as I looked at him. The only books that survived the war were the ones that were left in the vampire castle, and none of them had anything about my parents’ ancestors. Gillian smiled but he didn’t look at me.
“You didn’t hear this from me, but yes. One of them had a mistress that nobody knew about. She had a little girl and when your ancestor’s mate found out, she took the child as her own. They didn’t have children, so it was probably the obvious thing to do. Having a child with someone other than your mate was a huge scandal back then.” He laughed. I sat gaping at him like a fish out of water.
“Naughty, pervy ancestor!” I finally found my words making Gillian laugh even louder. “But wait, I thought a mate couldn’t cheat on their mate. Isn’t that like the entire point of the mate bond?” I frowned and he cleared his throat.
“Yes and no. Yes, when mates are marked, they can’t physically cheat, but if you never mark your mate … Well, then …” He shrugged, making my eyes grow even wider. I didn’t grow up with wolves. There was a lot I clearly didn’t know.
“The devil is in the detail, I guess.” I sighed, making Gillian laugh out loud. I didn’t want to get up and leave for fear that he might not be able to come with me, but I could see Lucca in the distance and I had to get back. “Thank you, Gillian. For everything. If you didn’t push so hard for me and Lucca to be together, I probably never would have found love.” I sighed.
“Hey, I wasn’t the only one.” He winked and stood up. I got up, and he was still there, which made me so happy. Lucca joined us, and he was so happy to see his old friend that we just kept on talking on our way back to the castle. I looked at the people as we walked through the streets and realized that we won’t always have peace. There will probably come a time when we have to fight a war or something again, but for now, everyone was safe, and that was all that mattered.
