Chapter 183 - The Stolen book.
The entire mansion was loud, chaotic and a bit messy.
And for once… I wasn’t the center of attention.
I stood at the top of the stairs, looking down, watching them.
All of them talking and whispering, gasping like they had just seen a ghost.
“No one has seen that in centuries…” “A stainless white wolf…”, “I swear it was pure white… not a single mark…”, “I thought it was just a story…”
I folded my arms slowly, my lips pressed together. So this is what it takes.
This is what it takes for all of you to look at her like she’s something special.
A white wolf, of course. I let out a quiet scoff under my breath.
Some of them looked… happy. Disgustingly happy.
“I’m so happy for her…”, “She’s always kind…”
I rolled my eyes. Kind… please.
And then I saw Calista standing across the hall. Unlike the others, she wasn’t smiling.
Her face was tight, her eyes dark, filled with hate.
Good. At least someone here still had sense.
Because all of this? This sudden admiration? It's ridiculous.
Now, I had something more important to do.
I turned away from the stairs, from the noise and all of them and I walked straight down the hallway.
My heels clicked against the floor with every step. Jasper.
I needed to talk to Jasper. I stopped in front of his door and knocked. The door opened almost immediately.
He calmly stood by the door, but before he could say anything, I pushed the door open and walked inside.
“I’ve done my part,” I said immediately.
He closed the door behind me slowly.
“What part?” he asked, his voice calm like always.
I turned to face him fully. “I broke them,” I said. “Edward and Elara. I broke their relationship.”
He stared at me for a second, then shook his head slightly.
“We’re not sure about that,” he said. “Edward ran after her.”
I frowned.
“That doesn’t show signs of a breakup.”
I scoffed loudly. “I don’t care,” I snapped. “All I know is that they’ve broken up.”
He didn’t respond so I stepped closer.
“I did a great job,” I continued. “I exposed everything.”
Everything she was hiding. Everything she thought she could keep from him.
“And besides,” I added, folding my arms, “I broke up with Edward too.”
Jasper raised a brow slightly.
“But did he throw me out?” I asked.
No answer.
“Did he chase me out of the mansion?” I pressed.
Still nothing.
“No,” I answered for him. “He didn’t.”
I stepped even closer. “Because that’s who Edward is,” I said, my voice calmer now. “He’s not heartless like most people I know.”
For a brief second, my chest tightened but I ignored it.
“He still chooses to protect people,” I continued. “Even when they hurt him. Even when he has ended things with them.”
Then my eyes locked with Jasper’s.
“Not like you.” He didn’t react immediately.
He just stared at me, trying to read me, trying to figure me out but I didn’t break eye contact.
I had done my part, now it was his turn. After a moment, he sighed. “Fine.”
Just like that.
“I’ll make the call.” I blinked.
That was it? No argument? No negotiation? He just agreed?
Jasper walked to the table and picked up his phone.
Dialed a number and the call connected.
“I sent you the bank details,” he said calmly. “Make the payments.”
“Okay,” the person on the other end replied.
Jasper ended the call, then turned to me.
“I’ve given the order,” he said. “Your father’s debt will be cleared.”
My heart skipped.
“He will be released soon.”
For a moment, I just stood there.
Silently processing it. “Thank you,” I said finally.
My voice steady. I turned and walked to the door, opened it and left. But the moment I stepped out something didn’t feel right.
I slowed down. My steps losing their sharp edge.
“That was too easy…” I whispered to myself.
I stopped walking. My mind replaying everything.
He didn’t argue and he just… agreed. I didn’t like that.
“I don’t trust him,” I muttered.
Jasper was not the kind of person who just did things like that.
Not without something meaningful in return.
I just felt restless about the whole thing. I knew something wasn't right.
There might be something else Jasper is up to. Something he wasn’t saying.
And if that was true, then I needed something too.
Something to protect myself. Leverage.
My eyes shifted slowly and landed on Edward’s door.
For a second I just stood there, thinking.
Then I looked around, the hallway was empty.
Usually there were guards always standing outside his door watching and guarding the room.
But now, no one, they were all downstairs, distracted.
Talking about Elara. Of course.
I felt a small smile tug at my lips. Perfect.
I moved quietly. My steps softer now.
I reached Edward’s door and pushed it open slowly. Just enough to slip inside.
Then I closed it behind me. The room was silent. Everything is in place.
I walked straight to his study. My eyes scanned the shelves.
Books, files, documents, everything arranged neatly.
My fingers moved quickly. Checking and searching.
Looking for anything that felt and looked… important. I was looking for the book. The book Jasper wanted so bad.
And then I saw it. It looked old and different. The cover was worn but not damaged.
My heart beat a little faster. I stepped closer.
Like I was afraid it would disappear if I moved too fast.
I reached out and picked it up. It was heavier than I expected.
I turned it slightly. Ran my fingers over the cover.
“This has to be something…” I whispered.
I didn’t know what it was. But I knew it mattered.
I could feel it. It wasn’t just a normal book.
It couldn’t be but right now I didn’t need to understand it. I just needed to have it.
Without thinking twice I took it. I held it tightly against my body.
Then I turned, ready to leave but something caught my attention. The window.
I walked toward it slowly and looked out and my heart stopped.
The cars, they were driving in. The headlights cutting through the darkness.
Doors opening as they were stepping out.
Edward, Elara, and the others. They were back.
“Damn it…” I whispered. I didn’t have time.
I turned quickly, rushed to the door, opened it slightly and peeked outside.
The hallway was still empty. Good.
I stepped out, closed the door behind me carefully and walked away very fast.
My grip tightened around the book. My heart pounding loudly in my chest.
I reached my room, opened the door, slipped inside and locked it immediately.
I leaned against my room door, breathing hard. Then slowly, I lifted the book again.
Staring at it, my lips curved into a small smile because now I had something.
Something important, something I could use. This was my leverage.
