Chapter 73 CHAPTER 73
Michael's POV
She was lying down so peacefully as though she had gone for a nap after a hectic day with her grandchildren.
“This doesn’t look like a coma,” I said, my eyes still fixed on her.
The head Matron smiled. “It’s actually just a very long sleep.” She pushed the curtains covering the window aside and light filtered into the room.
“How long has this been?”
“It’s been so long that we’ve stopped counting. I know you are thinking, why didn’t we try to wake her up? We did. We tried everything. It's also hard for her to get expert services because there are some unpleasant rumors about her.”
I nodded. I had heard.
I wondered if she would ever wake up. Maya made it seem as though she was the only one that could help find Evelyn. I held her hand tenderly and whispered. “You have to wake up, Anna.”
Before leaving, I made some donations.
“Anonymous as usual?” she asked, smiling ear to ear.
“Yes. Anonymous. And…If she wakes up at all, let me know. The very instant.”
“Of course, Alpha Michael. Let me see you out.”
There were a couple of calls from Rosaleen on my phone.
“Hey,” I said, tapping the speaker icon.
“Hey,” she responded. “I've been trying to get to you all morning.”
I set the car in reverse and eased into the main road. “I've been busy with something important.”
I wanted to ask her if she was no longer interested in working at the company.
“Oh,” she replied sharply. “I got this invitation this morning to a party. It seems like a really special function.”
“The billionaire's club?” I asked.
“Yeah,” she answered. “The invitation card is really fancy.”
“Shit!” I cursed. “I'm on my way.”
The billionaires club held once every three months and I was one of the 4 founding members. I had planned to take Evelyn with me to the dinner and make a formal proposal there. I slammed my feet on the accelerator, dodging a trash can on my path.
Rosaleen insisted on going with me.
“It's a dinner,” she said, still admiring the card. “No one goes to dinners alone.”
I buttoned my jacket. “I don't have to go with anyone. I've been going alone for many years.”
I examined the tie colour I'd chosen and changed my mind. My wardrobe stylist was out of town and deciding on what to wear for an occasion was quite a task.
“Well, it's different this time. You have someone to go with you,” she countered.
“Rosaleen, I'm trying to get dressed. If you think it's such a good idea to come along, you can get dressed too.” I glanced at the wall clock. “But I'll be leaving in less than an hour's time.”
“I'll get ready,” she said and turned away.
I reached for inside the pocket of the suit jacket I had set aside for the dinner. The most beautiful diamond ring was there. The ring I planned to give Evelyn on our official engagement. It was special because I'd incorporated her mate link device in it. I ran my fingers over it gently.
“Talk to me, Evelyn. In any way you can. I'll make sure I go through hell to find you and punish everyone who had a hand in this.”
I placed the ring back in the pocket.
The party had started when we got there. Rosaleen had her arm intertwined with mine.
“It’s such a pleasure to finally meet you,” Alpha Caspian, one of the four youngest billionaires in New York said, shaking her hand. “We've heard of all your contributions to Greywood Industries."
She smiled. “It's nothing. Now that Michael and I are a couple, I hope to do even more.”
He looked at me. “Such a supportive mate isn't easy to find all the time. Congratulations, Alpha Michael.”
“Thank you, Caspian. I’m looking forward to the day when you'd introduce your mate to the club.”
He laughed. “Wait no further. I'm currently at the brink of being engaged.” He looked around and then beckoned to a woman who was dressed in a black gown that had real diamond stones attached to it.
I almost gasped audibly when I saw her face. Tamara?
The lady joined us and I watched her. I could see Tamara's face but something about her seemed different.
“This is my girlfriend, Flora Dover,” he said, smiling.
She stretched her hand towards me and shook it firmly. Her eye contact was nothing like Tamara's. “It's nice to meet you, Alpha Michael. From the looks on your face I can tell you had me confused for someone else.”
“Yes,” I said, still intrigued. “Tamara.”
“That's my sister. Fiona Dover.”
“Yes,” I nodded. “Jasper told me about it. How is she?”
“I guess she's fine.”
She turned to Rosaleen whose face looked like she had seen a ghost.
“Oh Rosaleen,” she said, smiling. “We've met before.”
“Hello, Flora,” she said. “I didn't think I'd meet you here.”
She shrugged. “Yeah. Xavier and I broke up, as you must know. Are you still in contact with him? It's unfortunate he had to run away with his step sister.”
“No..no,” Rosaleen answered sharply. “We aren't in contact.”
“Xavier?” I asked, watching the two women.
“Yes. Xavier Heart,” Flora continued. “We used to date.” She laughed. “Infact, Rosaleen had joined us on a triple date before.”
“I didn't know Rosaleen was that close with Xavier,” I said.
“Not close at all,” Rosaleen said. “It was purely business.”
The look on Flora's face told me there was more to their meeting than business.
“Well, it was nice to see you again. And congratulations on your engagement,” she said to Rosaleen. Then she faced me. “Good luck, Alpha Michael.”
I wanted to stop her as she began to turn, to ask her what she meant by that. I knew she had something to say to me. My phone began buzzing. I reached for it and found an unknown number calling.
“Hello?” I said, pressing the phone to my ear.
“Michael, it’s me -”
