Chapter 72 CHAPTER 72
Evelyn's POV
I woke up shivering. I had that dream again. It was a bit different this time but I knew it was the same dream.
The glowing symbols on the wall. But instead of a fox, there was a veiled woman.
I groped in the dark for the light switch and I turned the light on. I reached for a small journal where I'd started documenting things and wrote out the dream.
A nine tailed fox.
That woman had called me that. I'd heard stories about them. They were mainly legends and we were thought to hate them. They disrupted order and were not considered as wolves.
I had reasons to believe her. I wasn't like any other wolf. I had nightmares about foxes that glowed and healed remarkably fast.
I laid in bed staring at the ceiling after I finished writing in my journal. Did I have special powers that I could explore?
When I woke up hours later, it was to the sound of the door being opened. I shuffled out of bed quickly and hit my diary underneath the bed.
The door opened and Xavier walked in with a breakfast tray.
“You were sleeping when I came earlier,” he said.
I watched him. He looked extremely happy. I wondered if he had peeped into my diary.
“You have to stop this madness, Xavier,” I said. “You are going too far.”
He dropped the tray.
“What are you talking about?” He said, his expression remaining good and irritatingly calm.
“This madness. I dont love you. Not in this way. You are my brother!”
“I'm not your brother, Evelyn,” he said, his tone flat. “We don't share any parents.”
I bit my lips. “We grew up together. This is sick. I can't be with you.”
“Maybe you need something to help you move on,” he said. He tossed his phone on the bed. “That is the news of Alpha Michael and Rosaleen's engagement.”
I froze, looking at the phone on the bed.
“While you are stuck here believing your Prince charming is coming to rescue you, I'm the one taking care of you!”
I stepped forward and picked the phone. It was true.
“Is this real? He could never,” I muttered.
“He has moved on, Evelyn. And he's made you the most hated woman in New York. Your father's name has been soiled. I'm the only one giving you another chance.”
My eyes clouded with tears and I felt my chest tighten. Rosaleen was smiling happily at the camera showing off the same ring Alpha Michael had given me. She was getting everything she wanted eventually.
He grabbed the phone from my hand and his arm grazed mine in the process. I flinched and tears spilled.
“Instead of sulking, you should be grateful to me and looking for ways to get back at them,” he said. “Look around you. No one who hears whatever you say will believe you. So suck up and get over him.”
The breakfast turned cold by lunch time. I couldn't bring myself to eat it. So I emptied it in the water closet and flushed it away. Carmen arrived later on.
“I promised I'd visit,” she said, holding another tray of food.
I had no idea what Xavier had told all these people about me, but they were buying it. It was time to change my game plan.
“Do you have a phone I can borrow, Carmen?” I asked.
She looked at me suspiciously. “Why do you need a phone?”
I shrugged. “I'm not used to being without a phone for so long, Carmen. It's nothing serious.”
She frowned. “Xavier said I shouldn't give you my phone. I'm sorry, Evelyn. It's for your own good.”
“Yeah. I've heard that,” I said, sadly. “What do you do, Carmen? I barely know anything about you aside your name.”
“I'm a college student,” she said. “I'm majoring in Advanced Lupine deviations.”
I creased my brow. “What's that?”
She giggled. “I always get that look when I say that to anyone. Basically, I study non wolf variants.”
“Non wolf?” I arsed. “Like nine tailed foxes?”
“I haven't learnt much on that yet but it's part of the degree,” she said.
“I'd love to read your texts on them, please. If you don’t mind?”
“Not at all. Why are you interested?” she asked.
“Just curious.” I responded.
The meal sat unattended to while I thought of how I could use this situation. I could learn a lot about who I really was and see if I could help myself. If it was true that Alpha Michael had indeed dumped me, then I couldn't be waiting for him to rescue me. I needed to find a way out by myself.
“Aren't you going to eat the food?” she asked later on.
I was getting pretty hungry. I opened the plate and helped myself to a serving. We chatted for a while, played some games and then talked about other rare wolf forms she had learnt about. Perhaps Carmen was the key to breaking free from this prison.
I found an opportunity when she went to use the bathroom. Her phone was lying on the desk. I made my move. Her phone was locked but I had observed her when she put in her pass code. I typed it in and the phone unlocked.
Yes!
I opened the dial pad and closed my eyes tightly, trying to remember his phone number. I had a pretty good photographic memory and I seldom forgot anything I'd seen. I typed his number on the dial pad and pressed the call button.
The call started to connect.
I waited impatiently.
“Hello?”
I felt a wash of relief hearing his voice.
“Micheal, its me -” I whispered into the speaker.
“Evelyn? Is that you? Where are you?”
“What are you doing?” I turned around to see C
armen glaring angrily at me. Before I could say a word, she yanked the phone from my hand and ended the call.
