Chapter 41 CHAPTER 41
Evelyn’s POV
I was awake for a significant part of the night, my head buried over files and scribbles. I was seated close to the window and the wind was blowing my hair about while my night wear belowed.I squeezed one sketch and dumped it on the floor, joining a growing pile of rejected designs. I wanted Mate Link to be something that the customers could wear without feeling exposed. I needed the device to be incorporated easily, not daily jewelry. By 4am, I had three fantastic designs. I started reading papers, going through complaints. A lot of people had the problem of finding or keeping their mate bond. This device was the first product of its kind that would help a lot of wolves. Including me.
I felt excitement bubble to the surface. This was it.
By 6am, I took a quick nap.
As product manager, my morning started at 9am and my day stretched till 4pm. But I had a flexible schedule between those hours. I hurried to my office to add the finishing touch to my work and print out the hard copies. The technical guy met me just as I got off the lift.
“Mrs Greywood,” he called.
I stopped. “Oh, hello. Call me Evelyn, please.”
He didn’t look like he had pleasant news. “The report on diagnostics for your laptop is ready. It seemed it was badly tampered with.”
I felt my chest tighten. “How about my files?”
He shook his head. “I’m sorry. There isn’t much we could retrieve. All the documents on the internal storage are gone.”
I bit my lips. “Nothing can be done at all?”
“No, ma’am.”
I clutched my bag tightly. “Can I get a report of this tampering? Everything you found.”
“Sure,” he said, hesitating.
“Is there a problem?” I asked.
"Usually reports like these are sent to HR.”
“Just give me a copy,” I said, walking away. “Thank you.”
I closed my eyes and inhaled deeply when I got into the office. Rosaleen had tampered with my laptop to delete any trace of ownership of my work. She was smart, so I had to give it to her. Not anymore. All my work on my laptop was now saved on the cloud.
I made some final touches to the work and printed hard copies. Two copies. One for Alpha michael, and one copy for me. I placed my copy in my drawer and headed for his office.
–
The door was partly open when I got there. I tapped lightly on it and pushed it open. He glanced at me briefly before returning to his call. He was pacing, his phone pressed against his ears and the top buttons of his shirt undone. He pointed towards the sofa in his office and I sat there, trying to reorganize my pitch.
It wasn’t until he raised his voice suddenly that I bothered to listen on in his conversation.
“I pay you to make these problems go away, not report them to me. Fix it!”
His jaw muscles were clenched tightly and he seemed so furious.
“Yes, I can see the figures. Is this the current Mayor trying to mess with me? Why are there rumors that he wants his son to run for it now?”
There was a long pause. The person on the other end was speaking. I couldn’t hear a word.
“He is pulling his support? Ridiculous.” He moved to the window and then back to his desk. “Get me across to the Governor.”
The calls continued for more than thirty minutes, and each call was more confrontational than the last. I felt uncomfortable sitting there. I knew the calls were as a result of his father’s election. His image had suffered a major hit from that article about me, and then another article this morning which was suggesting some foul play.
“It'll be just a moment," I said, rising to my feet. “ I wanted to present a proposal to you.”
He gestured at me to drop the document on his desk. I hesitated a little. The last time I did that Rosaleen had stolen my work. I was going to object but his phone started ringing again and he turned away.
“Hello, governor.”
I sighed and dropped the file on his desk. It wasn't going to be like last time. I had evidence of my work.
I met Tamara in the hallway and it felt like a breath of fresh air. “What brings you here?” I asked her.
“Just collecting data for my project,” she said. “You look like you barely slept a wink.”
“Is it that obvious?’ I laughed.
“Not really."
I thought of discussing my project with her now. It would also be great to have someone who could defend me in case Rosaleen’s thieving hands gets to my folder. “You remember the app I told you about yesterday?’
She raised her brow. “You told me of an app?”
“Not really,” I said. “I am making a software that would match just perfectly with your project. A mate link device that can help people easily identify their mates as well as help strengthen mate bonds.’
She nodded slowly. “How does this work?’
“It’s a bit technical for now, but I just wanted to let you know about it. We could launch it together with your ball.”
“It sounds exciting,” she said. “Have you taken it up?”
“Soon,” I said, smiling. “On the desk right now.”
“It seems like something management would be pleased to see. I’m excited to see this product.”
I beamed. “You inspired it, Tamara. And I won't forget to mention that."
She laughed. “It won’t get me promoted.”
“It’ll get you recognised. Hard work and talent should be rewarded. At least, recognised.”
“I’m happy for you,” she said after a brief pause. “Let me know how it goes. I have to run now.”
Minutes passed, and then a few hours. I was almost convinced Alpha Michael had forgotten about my project. I was about to call him when my phone flashed on.
“Come in for your presentation,” he said.
