Chapter 40 CHAPTER 40
Xavier’s POV
There was a short pause before she lunged at me. She struck my chest and arms, and tried to hit me on the face. I moved away.
“You are a disgrace to me! Don’t you say that anywhere out of this room.”
I pulled myself up. “We are not related in any way.”
“She is your sister!” she yelled.
Anna stepped in the doorway. “What is going on?”
Mum rose up. “Go to your room, Anna. Your brother and I are talking.”
She hesitated. “Are you alright?”
“Yes,” I replied. “We’ll talk later.”
“Okay,” she said, dragging the word and turned away.
Mum leaned closer to me. “You think she cares a bit about you? She is married to Alpha Michael Greywood! I’m giving you an opportunity to make something of your life.”
“I don’t need your help, mum. I’m fine.” I pushed myself to my feet.
“I’ll cut you off, Xavier,” she threatened. “If you decide to continue with this madness. You’ll not get a dime from me.”
She mumbled something incoherent and turned away, slamming the door as she left.
I sat on my chair and sighed. I pulled out the drawer where multiple images of Evelyn were. I picked out the latest and ran my finger over it. I rose up and locked the door, then I pulled down my shorts and closed my eyes. I was hard just looking at her picture. I stroked slowly.
“You are mine,” I whispered, my breath ragged.
Then I moved faster and just as I was about to have a release, I took her picture and stared into her eyes. I smiled.
“No one can take you away from me.”
I was only five when I saw my mum crying in the bathroom. I didn't understand it then. Until I was ten. My father was cheating on her. Then he died and I felt happy, but my mother cried even more. That same month, she held my hand and told me we would have a new family. I hated it. I didn’t want another father.
Then I saw her. She was six and her innocent blue eyes calmed the storm in me. I endured it because of her, and when it was time for my heart to beat for someone, it beat only for her. She wasn’t my sister, she was my mate. And I would kill for her.
I fell into a deep sleep shortly after and was awakened by the vibrations of my phone. I groaned and reached for it. I didn't know the caller.
“Hello,” I said, twisting in the chair.
“Hello, Xavier Heart. This is Flora Dover.”
I sat up in the chair. “Who?”
“We met this evening," she continued.
“Y..Yes.” I stared at the phone number. “You don’t sound-”
“Like I was moments ago?” she chuckled. “I pull that stunt a lot. I have a deal for you if you are interested. Something to make us both happy.”
I absolutely loved deals but my mind was still processing the switch up in the character.
“Cafe Royale. At 8pm if you are interested," she added. “PS, I’m not trying to marry you.”
I went because I was curious. How did the shy lady who couldn’t sustain eye contact with me suddenly sound so bold? She was wearing a tube top and a leather skirt. Her hair was down, with the waves falling across her shoulders. A large tattoo of a phoenix bird sat on her shoulder to her back and her eyes were boldly lined. She was nothing like the lady I had met a few hours ago.
“This is surprising,” I said, pulling my seat and watching her.
She smiled. “A lot of people don’t know me this way,” she said. “I wanted you to see me for who I am.”
“I’m listening,” I said.
“I need to appear to my grandfather that I'm in a relationship - a serious one, so I can have access to my trust,” she said, and picked her drink. “It’s worth a lot but I don't really care about the money. A friend needs it urgently.”
I leaned forward. “You want me to act as your boyfriend?”
“For a few weeks,” she said. “Nothing much. And you’ll get a good cut from it. Twenty percent.”
“How much is your trust worth?” I asked.
“A few million dollars.”
The money was not tempting, but I needed to catch a breath from my mum. This looked like a convenient partnership to get into while I concluded my plans.
“Sounds interesting,” I said. “Why did you pick me?’
She sipped her drink for a long time and smiled at me. “Everyone knows what happened with the Moons. Your sister married for money and she was quite lucky.”
I felt insulted. I rose to my feet and the chair scraped the floor. “You can keep your few millions.”
“Wait,” she said.
I was gone before she could rise to her feet. She ran after me, calling my name. “Xavier! Please hear me out. I’m sorry.”
I stopped. “You think everyone can be bought with your money,” I spat out.
“I’m sorry,” she repeated. “That was totally unnecessary.”
“And?”
“I take back my words, Xavier. I really need your help.”
I crossed my arms over my chest. “I do this favour for you. In exchange, I don't want any money from you. But you’ll owe me a favour. Deal?”
She glanced at my outstretched hand, surprised by my offer.
“Deal,” she said finally, taking my hand and shaking it firmly. “Thank you so much. Xavier.”
Her handshake was firm.
“You are not predictable,” I said. “Remember, you owe me a favour for this.”
“Absolutely,” she beamed.
Her phone rang and she pulled it from her pocket. “Excuse me, please,” she said, and walked off a little.
“Hey, Marcus," she said, excitement in her voice. “I did it. It’s just a few more weeks and everything will be fine.”
She walked further away and the words became incoherent.
