Chapter 168 CHAPTER 168

Chapter 168 CHAPTER 168
Evelyn’s POV

The number of people outside had doubled by the time I stepped outside. I’d been gone for a couple of minutes but I had good news.

“I found them,” I said to alpha Michael as he rushed to my side.

Alpha Raymond had joined us.

“They need help. Your mum is injured,” I said to him.

Alpha Michael drove while I sat in the passenger’s seat beside him , giving him directions. Alpha Raymond sat at the back, holding little Michael. He had grown very fond of the baby he had tried to kill and on nights like that one, i wanted to punish him for that by taking the baby from him.

We arrived at the building and Alpha Michael turned off the ignition. We got out of the car and waited for my mum to show up. She did, and seeing the scratches on her head and arms broke me. She didn’t deserve to suffer anymore. Not since everything she had been through.

She pointed towards the direction she had come from. “Philly is there. She can’t move. He used iron on her.”

I had learnt from my mum a couple of weeks ago that iron to us was like what silver was to wolves. It was a dangerous tool.

Alpha Michael and Alpha Raymond followed her as she led them to where Philly was, while I remained alone with Michael. When they arrived minutes later, the men were carrying Philly. She looked badly injured and weak.

I hugged my mum and wiped away the dust on her forehead. I was glad nothing had happened to her.

“I was scared shitless, mum,” I said and tears stung in my eyes.

She touched my face tenderly. “I’ll always be here for you, Evelyn. I’m not leaving you again.”

I looked over at Philly as she was placed in the car. “Will she be alright?”

She shrugged. “Philly is strong.”

Alpha Michael joined us. “Thank you so much for taking care of her, Anna. And I'm so sorry for all the pain and injuries you had to go through.”

She nodded.

Alpha Raymond stood aloof, standing awkwardly in the distance, with his hands in his pockets while he tried to avoid any eye contact with us.

It was pitch black around us and only the light from the headlamps enabled us to see each other’s faces. I saw, in Alpha Raymond’s face, something I couldn't understand.

“Will you move to Greywood’s mansion instead?” I heard and I spun around.

“She can’t stay there.”

“It’s safer,” he countered and even though I didn't want to admit that he was right, he was. So I didn't interfere in the conversation again. I knew my mum was sensible and that she would not choose them over her sanity.

“It’s perfect,” she said and I blinked.

I said nothing until Alpha Michael left. “You are going to live in their mansion? Mum?” I was convinced she must have hit her head somewhere at a point during the night.

She looked at me. “You have to be careful too. The man who attacked us wanted us dead.”

I crossed my hand over my chest. “Really? You are really going to stay with the Greywoods?”

She eyed my dress. “You were out with Alpha Michael, weren’t you?”

I stuttered for a few seconds, then bit my lips. “It’s different. Alpha Raymond hates you, and you hate them too. Why are you getting involved again? Don’t you remember what happened last time?”

She nodded slowly.

I moved closer and checked her head for any signs of injury. Suddenly, she caught my hand and pulled me even closer. I was frightened by her gesture.

“He will not stop haunting our families unless I do what he wants,” she said, under her breath.

“What?”

“Viktor Calderon. He has Maya,” she continued.

“No,” I said. “We spoke. Just this evening. I called her to ask her about you.”

“He has her now,” she said. “And he won’t stop.”

The realization of what was going on hit me. Mum was not going to live with the Greywoods because she wanted to take care of Philly. She was going there because Calderon asked her to.

“What does he want?” I asked.

She looked towards the car and back at me. “Alpha Raymond,” she replied. I saw pleasure in her eyes. My own heart raced and pounded.

“How?”

“All I have to do is get close to him, convince him I'm a friend. Once I make him feel safe with me, I'll have access to something important that Viktor wants.”

I thought of Rosaleen and how she had blackmailed Tamara. A deal with the devil was never enough. He’d want more and more.

“Viktor Calderon cannot be trusted, mum,” I replied, pretending to dab something on her forehead. “Why do you think he would keep his word? He’ll want more and more, and he may still eventually harm us.”

She smiled. “Calderon cannot play me, Evelyn.” She looked away at the crowd again. “I have to do this for us, this time. And to make sure he pays for those years where he made us suffer for the pleasure of it.”

I sniffed. “Does Philly know about the plan?”

She shook her head. “But I bargained for her. He’ll spare her in exchange for Alpha Raymond.”

I didn’t like the plan at all. It was risky. Too risky. She was being placed between two large and powerful families, to be used as a tool of vengeance. But I thought of Aunt Maya. I wouldn't forgive myself if something bad happened to her.

For a while, I considered asking her to make a deal with Alpha Raymond instead, to blindside Viktor Calderon. But I remembered that he was a pompous piece of shit who would throw us under the bus in the twinkle of an eye.

It was a choice between two evils. And we had to stick to the lesser evil.

I squeezed her hand. “Okay, mum. Let’s do this. I’ll help you in any way that I can.”
She shook her head. “I don't want you to get involved in any way. Just leave this to me.”

A few minutes later, we were leaving the scene. I sat beside Alpha Michael quietly as we drove towards the mansion. He was as excited as a child that my mother would be coming to live in the mansion. Perhaps he thought it was a step towards reconciliation between both families. But I knew that it would be the final blow that would send a wide rift between us.

Nothing would be spared from this mission. Not us.
