Chapter 155 CHAPTER 155
Evelyn's POV
“Who's he?” She asked.
I mumbled something incoherent. “I'm not supposed to be the one telling you,” I said. “He should."
Her eyes gleamed in excitement. I'd never seen her so happy in that way before. I'd imagined she didn't care about feelings nor crushes.
And I felt sad for her because it was better she didn't know.
“Tell me,” she pressed.
I moved away and dug a finger into the cake, carving out a portion. I knew that would distract her for a while.
“You're ruining the cake before we take any pictures!” She yelled.
I laughed. “You'll wake Michael up.”
“You don't want to tell me who he is, do you?” She asked. “Well, at least tell me who was at your party.”
I laughed. “You want to know too many things you shouldn't mum.”
She frowned. “It wasn’t Alpha Michael, was it?”
I sighed again, the memories of our encounter resurfacing to my mind. “No,” I lied.
She didn’t believe me.
“Thanks for the cake, mum,” I said, walking back into the room.
I laid on the bed and thought of Alpha Michael again before I slept off.
—
A gift for baby Michael was delivered from Barcelona the following morning, and before checking the details of the sender, I knew who it was immediately.
It was the woman who had saved me from the raving madness of Xavier. I made a mental note to send a ‘thank you’ text and keep in touch.
I wanted to have a busy day. I had spent the previous day sulking and opening doors I should have left shut. The only way I could have a clear mind was to be away from the house and to bury my head in work.
As I walked out of the house, mum called out to me.
“We’d need a baby sitter for Michael,” she said. “Don’t forget the interview again.”
I nodded. “Yeah. I won't.”
I walked out of the house, noting the spot where Alpha Michael had parked his car the previous day as if to remind me that it had not been a dream or my imagination. I stepped closer as though I would still catch his scent.
It was the smell of a cold frosty morning that hit my nose.
I headed to the car and I was about to start it when I heard my name. I was startled and turned immediately, almost dropping the key to the ground.
It was Madeline.
I heaved a deep sigh of relief. “You startled me,” I said, looking at her face and barely recognising the stern woman I had grown up with. Her face was battered with stress and anxiety. She had lost Xavier afterall, and she was losing Anna too.
“I need your help, Evelyn,” she said. “Perhaps you are the only one that can help me.”
I glanced at my wristwatch out of habit. I wasn't in a haste to get to work. But i didn't want to spend my morning in the cold, listening to Madeline.
“What is it?” I asked.
“I want Anna to come back home,” she said.
I was slightly irritated. She had treated me like trash for many years, despite knowing what she had done to my mother. Then her son stole so much from my father, until he died because we didn't have enough money. Even if I could help her, why should I?
“That’s not in my power, Madeline,” I responded.
“You can talk to Alpha Michael. She won’t speak to me. She hates me. She blames me for taking her away from them. I want her to forgive me and come back home.”
I leaned against the side of the door. “I’m not married to Alpha Michael. We don’t have any personal relationship. I can’t talk to him on your behalf.”
“But you are his mistress,” she blurted out. “Please, Evelyn. Help me.”
I leaned up. “First, I'm not a mistress to anyone or Alpha Michael. I was his contract mate. Secondly, I can't give you any favors. If you need help, talk to him, afterall, you are still Anna’s mother in some way.”
Tears gathered in her eyes and they glistened. “I’ve lost Xavier. I don’t want to lose her too.”
I felt pity for her, but then I thought of all the years when she had treated me worse than a maid. I thought of the night she had thrown that dress at me and told me to seduce Alpha Michael and Roman Reign.
“I can’t help you,” I said finally. “I have to go. Talk to Alpha Michael or Alpha Raymond by yourself. I’m sure they'll be excited to help you.”
I drove to work shortly after that, chiding myself for wronging too much. There were a couple of things that needed urgent attention on my desk.
I worked until it was midday.
Then I sent my PA to get the girls that were available for the position of a babysitter. I had five people who had made it to the office for the interview.
The door swung open with my PA standing in the doorway. Beside her was a young lady that I recognised.
“Jolene Davis,” she said, introducing the lady beside her.
It was hard to believe that I would see Jolene again. I heard she was still working at Roman’s company, the last time i asked around,
When the PA left, I rose up. “Jolene?”
Life was definitely playing a serious joke.
She stepped forward, unsure. I thought of that day we had seen in the coffee store. I thought of how I’d caught her fingers trembling,
“I know that I don't deserve to be here but I need this job,” she said.
I watched her. “What happened to your job with Roman?”
“He got fired and I was kicked out,” she said.
I sighed. “I can’t employ you, Jolene.”
She stepped closer. “I have something that may help you beat Roosaleen.”
I raised my brow.
“Roman has tapes,” she said. “He has tapes of every woman he has been with. Including Rosaleen.”
