Chapter 153 CHAPTER 153
Evelyn’s POV
When I heard the doorbell ring again, I knew it was him. Michael was already asleep in my arms and I laid him in his bed. I passed by the mirror on my way out and I caught a reflection of my half drunk form. I looked like a pity case.
There was a lingerie set Alpha Michael had gotten for me a while ago. I had never worn them. A naughty smile crossed my face as I peeled off my dress and wore them. I told myself I looked better when I stood in front of the mirror. If he wanted me as much as I wanted him, then I was not going to stop him.
I returned to the door and pulled it open. He was about to say something but his mouth hung open and his eyes flew down the length of my body.
“What are you doing?” he asked, stepping in and easing me inside. He closed the door behind him.
I smiled. “Why did you come back?”
He tried to look away. "I forgot my keys. I came back for them.”
I felt my heart squeeze in my chest. I had thought he had come back for me. That he wanted to finish what we had started.
“Oh,” I replied, biting my lips.
But he remained fixed where he stood. His eyes struggled to remain on my face. I saw his nose flare slightly as he struggled to breathe. Perhaps if we remained still, I would also hear his heart beating wildly.
“Do you just want your keys then?” I asked, leaning on one hip. “You can…”
My words were swallowed by his kiss. Passionate. Burning. Consuming.
I staggered backwards, until my back hit a wall. He didn’t stop kissing me for a fraction of a second. I didn’t want him to stop either.
When his lips traveled down the length of my neck and I arched it backwards to give him enough room, he finally found his voice.
“Do you want this, Evelyn?" he asked, his voice wet with desire.
I moaned and dug my nails into his flesh. How could he ask me that?
I raised my arms up against the wall to give him even more room and he pinned them against the wall while his lips sent shivers all over my body as he moved downward and downward. I cried out in intense pleasure as he found all the spots on my body. He devoured me like a favourite meal.
When his hardness pressed against me minutes later, I was ready for him.
—
I watched him sleep for a long time after we were done. I thought of how perfect we were. I thought of how perfect we could be as a family and my chest tightened. I didn’t want to spoil what was by wishing for what could be.
So I eased myself out of the bed gently. I found a robe and wrapped it around my naked body. It was almost 7pm and I knew mum would be back within the next hour. She wouldn’t approve of what I had done but all that mattered was that I had no regrets. Yet.
I picked up my phone and I remembered the text from John Dover. I knew what the text contained but I scrolled through his message again. He was offering me Rosaleen in exchange for Alpha Raymond.
I sighed and dropped the phone. Maybe in another life, I would learn to choose myself first before thinking about Alpha Michael.
“Hey,” I heard his voice seconds later.
I turned around.
“Are you okay?” he asked, standing in the doorway.
I smiled. “I’m fine. Great,” I replied, hoping my voice was sounding chippy enough.
He walked in and examined my face. “Are you mad about what happened?”
“No,” I said, shaking my head even though my voice came out as a whisper.
His eyes peered into mine. “Sure?”
I nodded. “I was thinking about something else.” I glanced at the time. “Not a bad way to celebrate a birthday, I guess.”
He nodded slowly, still watching me.
“You should go,” I finally said. “My mum won’t be happy to see you here.”
“She hates me, doesn’t she?” he asked.
I fiddled with my phone. “Rightfully so.”
He started to say something but pursed his lips. I guess he was tired of making promises that he couldn’t keep. I was tired of hearing them too. I preferred to live this way, looking forward to nothing.
He leaned forward and planted a kiss on my forehead then held it a little while. I could almost hear his silent promises as he breathed steadily.
“I’ll be on my way,” he said.
I watched him leave the kitchen without walking him to the door. My heart was too heavy for me to lift myself up.
Mum arrived with a surprise cake that I pretended to be surprised about. I saw her message to a baker about two days ago when she visited.
“Happy birthday, my darling Evelyn,” she said, her eyes alternating between my fake surprise face and the parcel and flower on the couch.
I guess she was the one who turned out to be surprised.
She was pleased to see the gifts. Perhaps she thought that it was a sign that I was moving on. That I had finally accepted one of my suitors.
“You had a small party,” she said, still smiling. “I’m happy you are having some fun, Evelyn.” Then she winked at me. “I can’t wait to meet him.”
I laughed. “What about you? When am I going to meet this secret admirer of yours?”
She frowned. “He developed cold feet, I guess,” she said. “We were supposed to meet today.” She sighed. “Or he found out that I'm a nine tailed fox.”
“Oh, he knows that already,” I blurted out before I could stop myself.
She looked at me. “You know this person?”
I bit my lips and nodded my head. “Yes, mum. I know him. You know him too.”
